Does that go against the basic principle of being a Bible alone Christian?

He gave some pastors and teachers.

A good commentary is similar to a good preacher expounding upon the Word of God.

In both cases, one must weigh what they read or hear with what the Holy Ghost speaks to them as they read, study and pray about the Word of God itself.

They can be helpful as long as long as you understand they are just comments by a man and thus may or may not be correct. I must admit though I have seen some people who seem to place far to great importance on them.

Helpful? Definitely.

Agreed with the other posts as far as comparing it to teaching, which we often need.

My thoughts, exactly. I do like to use a commentary at times when I am studying, and I know my hubby and son do, also, but we are all aware that man wrote them, they are not inspired, and they are fallible.

We stand on the shoulders of giants. While the men who wrote these commentaries are not infallible, it certainly does help to know that one isn't coming up with their own "new" doctrine. I worry about preachers who use the phrase "now you won't find this in any commentary."

I started to add some of the public domain commentaries to http://phpBible.org, but after looking through a few I noticed that they all seemed to make the exact, same, careless mistakes. As I wrote on the main page of http://phpBible.org...

Because the geneologies in the first chapter of Matthew mention a Rachab in Matthew 1:5, it has been assumed by those who failed to really study the subject that Rahab the harlot of Joshua 2 and 6 is being referred to. Since she is mentioned in the New Testament, specifically by the name
