I would like to know what you believe it means to "call upon the name of the Lord". I am convinced that we have put a lot of emphasis on the prayer. The key is the word "call" does this word mean pray? I believe it means: to trust; to depend upon; to believe. Much like when I teach a class I "call" on my experience to help me. Or the way my wife has called upon me for all most 30 years to take care of her. What do you think?

Question for the Calvinists 1 2 3 4

According to Calvinists: Only God knows who will be saved, and who will go to Hell. (that is my take, as described by the Calvies) So, how can a Calvinist rightfully claim to "know" that they are saved? [ If they say, " I am one of the "elect", then how do they know for sure- that they are- after all, only God has determined that ( according to Calvinists)] [ How can Calvinists be assured of their salvation, when they accept assumptions] Here is what I would be like, If I were to have been duped by Calvinism: "I am saved" , but " Am I actually one of the "elect"?" " The Bible says, " whosoever" but " Am I one of those elected whosoevers" "T…

I was reading the Eternal Security thread and am still kind of puzzled since I do come from a background that states that one can lose their salvation and am beginning to understand that if one is truly saved that they cannot lose their salvation. Is this, "truly saved", referring only to those that attempt not to live a sinful life? I know we are all going to sin and that we just have to dust ourselves and get up and keep going... That's how the guy that led me to Christ today explained it, in my own words of course. So how does one know if they are truly saved or not and know that their salvation can never be removed? But if one can backslide, how does their salvati…

Hey all I found some statistics a while ago (I think it was in the Nov/Dec 2007 issue of Baptist Bread), but I cant find them now. The stats had information about what age people are saved. For instance I think it said 60% of people saved were saved between age 6 and age 12. and so on. I was looking for it to use in message I will be preaching at the end of our Light Brigade Childrens Program. Just wondering if anyone had any info like that. :coffee

I don't really care what all y'all think. I could ask 20 people and get 20 different answers I want to know what Samer thinks (I emailed him and he never replied, so hopefully he will reply here). I'm not sizing you up for debate brother. I just want to know. If there is a place on the forum where you have defined it, please point me there. Would you agree with H.A. Ironside and his definition of repentance in these following quotes? "Repentance is the very opposite of meritorious experience. It is the confession that one is utterly without merit, and if he is ever saved at all it can only be through the merits of our Lord Jesus Christ, 'who gave himself a rans…

Was Israel saved because they were God's chosen people? The reason that I asked this question is because oftentimes when studying the OT we may ask ourselves well how could Israel be so stubborn and stiffnecked.? But when we look at the Jews in the proper context they are no different than you and I before we came to Christ. Or do you think that they are saved because they are God's chosen? What do you think?

Where do the scriptures teach that a soul is eternal? I know a born-again soul will live eternally, that is easy enough to prove. But what about unregenerate souls? What scripture teaches they have eternal life? Thanks, Doug

G?day! I found this interesting video on YouTube looking at the issue of Calvinism, it is a debate with James White (Calvinist) and Dave Hunt (non-Calvinist). It is quite a decent video, so I thought I would share it with you, and get your opinions on it as well. http://sovereigntybaptist.blogspot.com/ ... -dave.html May this video encourage us all to think more theologically as we come to dealing with the deep things of Scripture.

This is part of an article by John R. Rice: What Must I Do To Be Saved? WHAT ABOUT REPENTANCE? Does not the Bible say that we must repent? Yes, the Bible plainly says that "God ... commandeth all men every where to repent" (Acts 17:30), and again, "Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (Luke 13:3, 5). This was the preaching of John the Baptist, of Jesus, of Peter and of Paul, that men should repent. And certainly repentance is God's plan of salvation. The trouble here, however, is that men misunderstand what repentance means, and there has grown up an idea that repentance means a period of weeping and mourning over sin, or sorrow for sins. This idea comes fro…

What questions should a christian ask himself to know for sure he is saved? Like someone say " I have accepted Jesus as my Savior" but the truth is, he is a mormon. I read countless posts (other message boards) saying Romney, a mormon, must be saved because he publicly announced that he accepted Jesus as his savior. Of course, one the post here on OLB reminded me those posts so I thought I would start this topic.

My Pastor and I were talking the other day about how often man entangles his traditions or own thinking :ideas: into scripture and does not even realize it, and how careful we must be to be sure we are letting scripture interpret scripture. One area I have noticed being around many of the bretheren is the judgement of weather or not someone is saved. We preach salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and that it is a gift Eph 2:8-9, Rom 10:9-13 etc. Then when Christian sins or does not walk as we think they should walk the accusations fly of "he is not saved" "she can't be saved" etc. Yes James said faith without works is dead and Christ said by thier fr…

In the Bible it talks about Watchmen. As we observe the job of a watchmen we see that the lives of others are in their hands. For it is their job to watch and see if people come. In the same way we as Christians need to watch for when Jesus comes. Not only does the watchman watch he also warns. In 2 Samuel 18vs27 the watchman here was sending to Ahimaz one of the kings men so that he could bring news to the king whether things were alright or not. In likewise manner we need to warn the wicked of what they will face in Hell of an eternity. As you read on about the watchman you come across how dangerous it can be not only do they watch and warn they also have to go to the c…

Hebrews 12:5-11 says, "And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they veril…

Apologies in advance if this is already covered elsewhere, in which case this thread can just be deleted. In another Christian forum I visited once, they had a whole section devoted to peoples' personal testimonies; stories of their spiritual journey to salvation, and the circumstances in which they got saved. Would anyone like to share their personal testimony in this thread? I would go first, but I don't have a story, which is all the more reason why I'd like to hear yours!

Greetings! How do we know that we're Christians? What defines a Christian? Well, the biblical answer would be two fold: 1) *knowledge, *belief (or assent), and *trust in Jesus Christ. 1. Knowledge in that one intellectually apprehends the essential facts of who Christ is--namely, that He is God in the flesh (sent by the God the Father) that He really died and *physically* raised from the grave, and born of a virgin (also including the facts of the Tri-unity of God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit sharing the nature of the ONE God, i.e., one God co-existing as three eternal, equal, "distinct" persons). 2. Belief (or assent) in those facts. 3. Tr…

Psalm 119:63 says, "I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts." Those who truly believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are our brethren in the Lord. If they are living a holy life for the Lord, then we should seek to have Christian fellowship with them in the Lord Jesus Christ. However, if a man or woman is not living for the Lord, we should separate from that person. II Thessalonians 3:6 says, "Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us." We should seek to obey God by…

Here are the notes from the message my pastor preached about election on Wednesday night. It was the most easily understood message on the subject that I have ever head and it shows clearly why Calvinism is false doctrine. If you want to hear the entire message, it will be up soon on the website (I don't know how soon, my husband is going to maintain the website but the website isn't finished yet). It will probably just be titled 1 Thessalonians 1:2-4. It will be one of the very first messages there, as it was our second ever Wednesday night service on Wednesday so there aren't too many archives haha. http://www.heritagebapt.com/ Heritage Baptist Church, Picayune …

I've really been struggling in my mind over something lately. It seems there are a whole lot of churches that have bus ministries that bring in children who make salvation decisions, but then when they become a teenager or adult or they move away, etc.., they just quit on God altogether and live the worldly life and totally forget about their childhood decision. Is their salvation not real? Is it possible to get saved and then just forget about your salvation for the rest of your life?

For so long I have seen people put their trust not where it should be and just follow the words of men but I tell you the words of God are stronger then the words of man... I was reading a little bit in probverbs and I saw a verse that hit dead on it was Proverbs 28vs21 it says: To have respect of persons is not good for a piece of bread man will transgress. The way i see it is Gods words have always been but man's word hasn't..... I have a friend who is a street preacher that my family puts down and thinks he is wrong in what he is doing. I think what he is doing is right just because my family doesn't like what he is doing doesn't mean he is wrong. I think what h…

I John 5:13 says, "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." In heaven, all that truly know the Lord Jesus Christ as their own personal Savior will be there together! Therefore, we as Bible-believing Christians should truly love each other now as brethren in the Lord. I John 4:11 says, "Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another."
