Okay. We don't use it, and I don't know that I ever would because of its association with white supremacists. But I was just wondering if it would be a good thing to use if with Jewish people who did...

But God is the only God, and therefore didn't need a name. So he told Moses, "I am what I am. So tell them 'I am' sent you." To me it's a funny joke made at the expense of the silliness of the Hebrew people, who failed to grasp God's uniqueness. Arguing about how it's pronounced seems equally silly.

"Exodus 6:2-3 God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the LORD: And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them."

Doesn't sound like a "funny joke" to me. Sounds like a real name.

I would like to know more of the truth of the matter, but I do not think God's name is something to be taken lightly given the multitude of references to it in his word.

The joke is that he still didn't give them a name. His existence was enough, so when they asked for a name, He said in essence, "call me 'I am'". He is God, the one and only, He never needed a name, but the foolish Children of Israel wanted one to call Him, so the name He gave simply acknowledge His existence--I AM.

YHVH is translated "The LORD" in every place except where the context demanded an actual name, and in those cases the KJ translators gave the transliteration of the spelling--Jehovah. The way to say "I am" in Hebrew, however is Yah-Veh.

Actually' date=' Yahweh is NOT God's name in the OT - it is Jehovah. Yahweh is a name created by higher critics about 200 years ago. It was their attempt in using a corrupted text with no vowels to fill in the vowels on their own. ALL the other OT names with the same root word all have JEHO at the start of them, not YAH. Ie. Jehoshaphat, Jehoiakim, Jehoshua, etc. None of them say, Yahoshaphat, Yahoiakim, Yahoshua, etc.[/quote']

That's right Jerry. I'm pretty sure I posted something about this at one time.

So far, all those I've known who use the term "Yahweh" were well off in their theology and placed the use of that particular name at a very high level to the point of many of them being radical about it.

Look at that father Yahweh cult. Their leader said Jesus was coming back in June sometime. They all went to the compound to wait. Jesus didn't come but still they just make an excuse.

If you do a Google search, you might be surprised how many non-Christian sites link the name to a storm God.

Here is an article that might answer some questions:

Who Is Yahweh?

I don't know why you think "I AM THAT I AM" is not a valid name. :loco Jesus means saviour and it is a real name. Most names started out as a description of some characteristic. Smith, Richard, Potter, you name it, even Seth and Doty. :lol Why would a description of one of the most outstanding features of God, his eternal self existence, be an invalid name? Obviously God considers it a real name.

It is written:

"Exodus 3:15 ...this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations."

If it was really that important, why did He wait over 2,500 years to offer it? Even then it was only after Moses asked. God is the only God, therefore there was never really any need for a name beyond that. The later emphasis, to me, comes across as patronizing because the Children of Israel seemed make a big deal about that they finally had a God with a name--not realizing that their God was the only God, and all others were imaginary. Just look at what eventually became of their attitude. Today they don't even speak or write the name of God because they place too much emphasis on it. Jesus criticized them for focusing on trivialities and ignoring "weightier matters" This is a good example of that.

That is not logical. :wink You could just as well say that if it was so important for Jesus to come to earth and die for our sins why did God wait so long. God has his own timing...

Have you considered that may be more because Satan hates God and may not want his name used at all except in vain? Maybe "reverence" is just Satans excuse.

Just look at how many times Gods name is used in scripture, and the importance God himself has attached to it....

Every knee shall bow at what? His name....

God's names revealed to us in the Scriptures are so we would know Him better, in the different situations we face in life. Adam and Eve, Noah, etc. knew Him as God (Elohim, the strong one, the creator), but later He revealed Himself as Jehovah/Lord (which signifies His covenant with them). Each name reveals something different about His character and His care for His people.

Jesus coming was something that God chose, and had to be timed. God's name was something He never offered, until asked, then gave what to me is an annoyed response. He has never needed a name, because the purpose of a name is distinguish that person from someone else. there are no other Gods so there is no need to distinguish Him from any other.

Since the KJV obscures God's name by translating it "LORD" your reasoning hear would lead to claiming the KJV is then of Satan.

How many times have you seen a parent feign excitement over something that fascinates a small child, but in truth is of very interest to the parent. I'd say given that He never offered a name unti Moses ask, 2,500 year after creation, that the interest was all on the part of the Children of israel and subsequent followers who placed false importance on something that was never of much importance at all.

LOL, that verse actually reads...

I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. -- [bible]Isaiah 45:23[/bible]

Which is another joke. God's word is so powerful, there is no one who He can swear by, so He swears by Himself. ([bible]Hebrews 6:13[/bible]) Swearing is another silly thing people invented to try to create importance when none existed. As Christians we are commanded to never swear (although it seems few remember that)

Isaiah, while mentioning God's name, doesn't say people will swear by it. Actually the word used in Hebrew is shahbah, which is the number seven, which came from another superstition that if one repeated somethign seven times, they were really, really serious about it. Can you not see the childishness God was tolerating. We have been commanded...

34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:
35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

...because that, all along, was what He wanted, not childish games, just honesty and truth.

Danny, seems you are determined to set the Bible against itself. What Seth was referring to was this passage:

Philippians 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Hm, says exactly what Seth said it did.

God reveals various names of His throughout various points of His people's history. He does not do it out of irritation (if you think that, then you are missing much of the blessing of Word of God), but out of compassion and love for His people - to strengthen their faith and to teach them various things about His character and care of them.

God's name was something He never offered, until asked, then gave what to me is an annoyed response.

God has waaaay more than one name. Jehovah/LORD and God are the main ones used throughout the Bible, but there are various others.
