SEATTLE, Washington (CNN) -- A 66-year-old woman with stage 4 pancreatic cancer became the first person to use Washington's assisted suicide law, a nonprofit organization announced Friday.

Compassion & Choices, an organization that says it advocates choice for the terminally ill, said Linda Fleming of Sequim, took her prescribed medication and died Thursday evening at home with her family, her dog and her physician.

She had been diagnosed a month ago with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and was told she was "actively dying," Compassion & Choices said in a written statement.

"The pain became unbearable, and it was only going to get worse," Fleming said, according to the organization.

It said Fleming had worked with the organization's volunteers to consider her choices. "I am a very spiritual person, and it was very important to me to be conscious, clear-minded and alert at the time of my death," she said, according to Compassion & Choices. "The powerful pain medications were making it difficult to maintain the state of mind I wanted to have at my death. And I knew I would have to increase them."

Washington's law was approved by about 60 percent of voters in November. A similar law in Oregon passed in 1994.

That is sad! My folks live in Sequim, as does my sister. I'll have to ask if they knew her.

Washington is a very liberal state. No surprise that they passed the assisted suicide law. King County (the county in which Seattle resides) usually carries the rest of the state in votes, so even though there are conservative areas, liberalism almost always takes the day.

One reason liberalism always takes the day is because they are relentless in getting their way. Conservatives usually give up after one defeat. Another is liberals aren't expected to play by the rules while conservatives are.

Weird statement, was she saying, "I want an easy death, I want to die on my terms." I must say I don't believe she was spiritual, that is a saved person.

Let me interject something here:
Although I am totally against any kind of euthanasia, or any kind of suicide; assisted ot otherwise, I would not judge a person who commited suicide as being lost. Committing suicide is not the unpardonable sin; rejecting the Lord Jesus Christ is. At least two saved people, in the Bible, commited suicide. Saul was God's annointed and Samson is mentioned in the "faith chapter"... Hebrews 11.

But yes, a lost person who takes their own life will go to Hell.

Agreed. In this case, from what little that's mentioned, it would seem this person wasn't saved and therefore rushed themselves to Hell.

I know many Catholics believe that if one commits suicide they go to Hell automatically. I've used that as a door to talk with them about salvation.

My, "I don't believe she is a saved person'" is just an opinion from the statement she made, its not judging if she is saved or unsaved. As I have often said, I do not judge peoples salivation, but we can have an opinion of their salvation by their fruit. She just did not express her self as a person who puts their trust in Jesus.

I actually thought with the way I worded what I said that I would not have to give an explanation. But it seems at every turn on these message boards we have to give explanations giving fine details about what we really mean.

I sure many of you have your opinion about people who you think are saved and are not saved, just as I do, but in having that opinion your in no way trying to take Jesus' place in judging peoples salvation, for you are going to leave that up to Jesus who has earned the right to be the Judge and you totally respect that.

So please, when I make such a comment do not in any way think I am trying to usurp the authority of.

Mat 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Mat 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them

Jerry,
As far as I'm concerned, you are one of the most scripturally grounded people on the board. No, you didn't need to explain to me and my reply wasn't aimed at anyone in particular. Some folks do believe that suicide is an unpardonable sin and, for their benefit, I was just pointing out scripture references which refute that belief. I realize now, that I should have worded it differently.

I thought I had made it clear with my last sentence, but here is a correction......

Although I am totally against any kind of euthanasia, or any kind of suicide; assisted ot otherwise, I would not judge a person who commited suicide as being lost, simply for committing suicide. Committing suicide is not the unpardonable sin; rejecting the Lord Jesus Christ is. At least two saved people, in the Bible, commited suicide. Saul was God's annointed and Samson is mentioned in the "faith chapter"... Hebrews 11.

Right, I have had many people ask me if someone commits suicide, can they go to heaven or will it doom them to hell. Its amazing to me just how hard this is to explain to some people and how misunderstood it is by so many. In part because of that I gave my explanation, maybe it will help someone along with yours. Them after I made that post I had 2nd thoughts about it, but it was already done.

But let me tell you about this, its on the subject of suicide.

A few months back a woman who has gone through 13 to 15 surgeries and facing yet another one asked this question, "If I kill myself will I go to hell." I knew this woman from a health group I use to be a member of, I found out about her question because of another friend who knew I was a pastor let me know about it and asked me if I could help her out on this question. I went and read all that she said about this. It put me in a turmoil. If I explain to her that if she is saved, and she kills herself that she will not go to hell, will she them kill her self?

I finally gave her the best answer I could, but also tried to explain that no matter what she went thru that God would provide her all the grace she needed to get thru it, if only she would trust Him. But sad to say she received some answers that were not a bit biblical, but she did not do the unthinkable, was suppose to have surgery the 1st of this month, hope all is well with her.
