First, never be afraid to ask questions if they are legitamate. (This is refering to any question as long it is not asked to defraud or argue aimlessly, which I know you are not.)

Second, good posts John.

Third, if your husband is not saved, then seek council from the pastor as to what you need to do. Sadly this is the state of many Christian homes. Even saved fathers do not take the leadership rolls. Never be afriad to go to your pastor. That is why he is there. Natrually the time to ask would be after service in privacy (with his wife present etc.) :smile

The main context of the surrounding passage is in prophesy and speaking in tongues. In nost charimatic churches who does the most "speaking in tongue"? Women!

Not to start controversy here, but I have heard plenty of men speaking in tongues and when I was in one of those churches in my youth it was a bunch of men surrounded around me not women trying to get me to speak in tongues. I almost did and felt very wrong and blocked it off. I was told later by these men that maybe I did not have enough faith yet. This was a very large Assembly of God church and it was all men standing up speaking in tongues, prophesizing, and saying things about people getting healed. Not a tv preacher by the way.

I just believe that the whole verse means that you should not usurp authority over the man.

When I was first saved I was attending my girlfriends Assembly of God church. At that time they didn't speak in tongues. However, a couple of years later a new pastor took over and suddenly the church had a Christian rock band on the platform and there was speaking in tongues. I *might* have seen a couple women speaking in tongues (can't remember for sure as this was over 20 years ago) but I do know that several dozen men were very noisily speaking in tongues and it was a very uncomfortable situation. We only attended a few more services after that and we never returned.

Several years ago, I was working a death investigation. The deceased had been going to the AG church so I had some talks with the Pastor. He discovered I was a Christian and asked if he could pray with me. He slapped his hand on my chest and started to pray then about every 5 words would speak jiberish. "mygognogitc mossesetfff noristleen" (kind of an example). His wife stepped up and started babbling. I was freaked out by it. Was nothing I wanted any part of.

Passages like those found in 1 Timothy which seem to say women should keep shut are greatly taken out of context. First off we have forgotten the history and circumstances in which they were going on. Secondly we tend to cling to those few fragments in opposition to the rest of scripture which clearly states otherwise. We see Priscilla teaching Paul. We have examples of Women teaching. We see the new testament which is set in one of the most extremely sexist societies and men like Paul who may not seem like it in today's culture, but he was extremely progressive on these roles for his time. We are also given glimpses of Jesus himself breaking these sexist cultural oppressions. Specifically when he conversed with a gentile woman asking her questions and hearing her perspective and opinion when he asked about leaving the scraps for the dogs.

Most of the concept of women being less before God is nothing more than a sexist cultural creation of the world which we try to fit into the bible. It is yet another example of doctrine being corrupted by culture and not God.

We throw out occurrences of history when reading scripture like the Cult of Isis and say that certain phrases referring to those specific points happen to transcend time and negate the rest of the Bible as a whole looking only to what will support a nice little concept of Male dominance.

No-one has said anything about women being less then men. And no-one gainsays anything about women's spirituality. But the Bible specifically says a woman isn't to usurp a man's authority. Can't get much plainer than that nice little concept of male dominance.

Study the Bible, beginning from Genesis. The Bible is clear that a woman is to be in subjection to her husband. She cannot be if she is teaching him spiritual concepts. And Priscilla was with Aquilla. She's never mentioned teaching Paul alone.

Wow! I'm thankful to be under by husbands protetion and decissionmaking. I cann't teach a man but my husband told me that doesn't mean I cann't have a bible dicussion with a man say around a table and all are discussing repentance. When other men don't feel that way and are condecening towards me I say nothing and my husband takes over. But I try to never witness to a man but will answer questions if a man is not around. Yet I would never take authority over a man in teaching a sunday school etc. I believe this alsp applies out of church. I know not everyone agrees but for me this would be sin. Pixiedust

The context of I Corinthians 14:34,35 is tongues and prophecy. Unless you know of some women who are speaking in an unknown language or prophesying about things to come within your church than I'd be careful with the burden you put on women. It's clear that women are not to URSURP authority over the men within the local church or at home but for them to sit mute in church is ridiculous. "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so." Also, a woman can teach a man from the Bible. Priscilla did it (Acts 18). Women just can't hold a position of authority over the man within the church or home. If a man needs "doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction in righteousness" in the church it should be left up to a man to do it (preferably the pastor). To put it bluntly, women are not to run the church or home. Although in the latter sometimes they end up running it because of lazy and irresponsible husbands.

Happy Christian,

I would have no problem with my saved wife teaching me spiritual principles or something from the word of God. If she knew something I didn't I would welcome it. My problem would be with her URSURPING my authority. Anotherwards, if I told the kids they couldn't do something and she told them "don't listen to your father" or if she just plain did what she wanted to whenever she wanted to without talking to me about it that would be the problem. Also, if she tried to "lord it" over me when she was explaining something from the Bible that would be a problem. Yet, sometimes a husband does need a rebuke form his wife. "Submitting one to another in the fear of God."
