When I open my mouth wide my jaws crack. My dentist took note of it when I opened my mouth for examination and they cracked. He expressed concerned but didn't tell me why. My brother has mild TMJ and that was how his started.

If I move my jaw around sort of from side to side, it cracks a little bit. Once in a while, my jaw will lock in a certain way that sort of scares me, but after a few seconds of trying to get it un-stuck, it un-sticks! :pmpkn: I sure hope it never gets worse.

Temporomandibular joint syndrome, is what causes it and it is genetic in my family. My mother was one of the first people in the country to have her Jaw joints replaced with plastic back in the early 70's. When I was 16 the same surgeon who did my Mothers surgery, pulled all of my wisdom teeth, broke my jaw and re-shaped/re-set it to correct the way my jaw joint was wearing. It fixed the problem for a long time, and then my jaw got kicked and it popped and locked out of joint, and ever since then it has clicked again. I've been back to see the specialist a few times and have had corrective bite plates off and on, but eventually the joint will wear to a point that they will have to be replaced. And I'm so looking forward to that, since I still remember having my jaw wired shut for weeks the last time. Both of my Children have it, but right now the Doctor says it's not as bad as my condition, and that he doesn't recommend doing anything unless it becomes a problem. I used to get horrible migraines from the stress that the joint being out of alignment caused to the bones and muscles, before the jaw surgery.

Mine's always done that, and I've never really had any pain associated with it which would be what TMJ does.

Interesting story about TMJ.

Almost 20 years ago when I was in the college & career class at church, some friend went on a mission trip to Honduras. One, a girl who suffered from TMJ, had a really bad flare up caused by the bumpy ride on the bus over the rural Honduran roads. This was a medical mission and several people, doctors, pharmacists, nurses, etc also volunteered. So my friend was at dinner, having a hard time eating, and another friend asked here if she was okay. She said, "well, my TMJ's acting up really bad and I didn't bring any medicine for it." Across the table sat two men who had paused their conversation. One turned to my friend and asked, "You have TMJ?"

"Yes,"

"Well, I sort of specialize in it. Mind if I take a look?"

It turns out that the man was one of the leading TMJ specialists in Tulsa, and she got personal, free treatment for her TMJ for the entire week. He knew exactly what she needed to help her get through the week, not to mention advice on dealing with it.

It doesn't hurt and it only happen when food are too chewy. When I do eat chewy food, and my jaw start clicking, It tend to get exhausted. I tend to stay away from chewy food.

Yeah its TMJ....luckily I don't have it so badly that it aches all the time like some, but it does crack alot and sometimes really hard, or gets slightly stuck occasionally.

I got TMJ when I was in college. I was in a play, and had a hand gun. Another guy was supposed to wrestle the gun away from me, but in the process, he hit me on the jaw with the gun. That was NOT how we rehearsed the scene, however, we were given compliments on how real the fight looked, and the look of pain on my face after being hit by the gun.

Old topic but my jaws click all the time when chewing and or opening my mouth. I always wonder if one day its going to lock up and or I'l need jaw replacement and they're not dong that yet. The will I have to blend all my food up and use a feeding tube, I know I could not stand the taste of my food blended up all together!
