Pastor That Dress Right Preaches Right...

Hip and cool?  Principles of biblical separation would indicate that hip and cool is not what pastors are to strive for (we are not to be like the world...hip and cool is...).  If all one has is a pair of jeans, well and good.  But at least wear a pair that isn't full of (manufactured) holes.  There is no reason to dress like a slob in the pulpit.  And, yes, that man is dressed shabbily.  While his problem might be arrogance and pride, what we are on the inside does come out in our clothes.  I don't agree with robes, but would definitely prefer that to sloppiness.

I'm not God. So I (and everyone else) do look on the outward.  And slobs in the pulpit don't inspire confidence in what they are teaching.

Maybe the holes in the knees are from constant kneeling in prayer?

In the eight years I pastored, I only wore a suit and tie two services.  All other times, I wore casual clothing.  Not shabby, but casual; Pullover shirt with two buttons, with jeans or khakis.  Shoes were sometimes Tennis Shoes, sometimes loafers.

I do not believe God frowned on my appearance in the pulpit.

I wore slacks, sport jacket, dress shirt, and tie.  All picked out and color coordinated by my wife.  She didn't seem to care for the way I mixed and mismatched different hues.

God bless,

Larry

Yes, to the crowd he is preaching to, he is hip and cool. That is the trend among many of these young pastors, is to look hip and cool. Shabby is a matter of opinion. I think of shabby as more old worn out clothing. He is not wearing old worn out clothing. He is wearing very expensive blue jeans with holes intentionally placed and torn to give this "hip and cool" look.
It is all the rage.

I agree with you that this is not appropriate. But he is not going for shabby. He is appealing to the young arrogant crowd who want to be hip and cool, so he dresses like them. That reveals a matter of the heart to me. I don't care so much about what he wears, but when he is more concerned about appearance and looking hip and cool and fitting in with his crowd than with showing and demonstrating the love of Christ to those he ministers to, that is very concerning.

Hip and cool and grass-stained...

The problem is, many in their high dollar suits look down on those who can't afford those suits and see them as not worthy to be used by God.

"You must be decked out in fine apparel to be used of God" is the message many send with their condescending looks and statements.

Yet, God used a completely naked man for three years.  He used a man dressed in camel's hair.  He used a man who laid on his side as a sign to Israel.

God uses whom He will.

No, you don't have to wear an expensive suit, but why look shabby?

To me this guy looks like he is trying to be something he is not in his heart of hearts.  He seems to me to be plastic, not real, a phony.  He comes out in front of the people whom I firmly believe he feels better than and tries to show them "hey look I am just one of you".  "Yeah you can believe what I tell you cause I am just one of you".  Do you think he dresses like this when he takes his wife out to dinner?  If he doesn't (and I don't think he doesn't) he is a hypocrite.  I think if you are going to deliver the word of God you ought to look like you have a little respect for him.  Should an ambassador for the Lord show up for work looking like a bum if he has been provided with the means by his Lord to look better?  I think not.  Judging from the backdrop in the picture he can certainly afford better.

Hmmm --- KOB, second hand doesn't have to be worn out and frayed, SFIC, a good suit can be afforded.

I've owned excellent suits (worth $200-$2000) that were obtained at yard sales, estate sales, thrift stores or flea markets for $5-$25. I'm talking new in appearance. Once I got a dozen barely used HIGH dollar suits (that fit) from the widow of a lawyer who had just died.

I have also preached in overalls.  I don't generally wear a tie like in the picture -- mine's usually a "string tie", a "bolo tie".

Bro. Larry,

I think he's exactly who he is in his heart of hearts.  His name is Mark Driscoll...a farely well-known "pastor" from Seattle, Washington.  A few weeks ago I saw a clip of him...well it was several clips actually.  He mocks the word of God during his "sermons", he uses crude language during his "sermons", and he makes vulgar references during his "sermons".  From my understanding, this is normal in his "preaching".

But at least John Piper thinks he's great...

If he was on a job site (construction) I'd tell him to put the coat in the truck, if he came in for a job interview I'd laugh him out of the building, if he was a CPA I'd find a different one.

I was on a large job once (15 story condo) and one kid with no sense was told to find pants that fit and FIND A BELT!! One time he was in the convenient store getting lunch (both hands were full making it difficult to hold his pants up). One of the guys came up behind him and snatched his pants to his knees there in public.

Guess what, the next day (and every day thereafter) the kid wore properly fitting pants with a belt.

Even lost people understand minimum clothing acceptability for the occasion or location

Part of me feels sorry for this latest generation's youth.  Many of them have no idea.
