Depends on the person. Is this person a jewelry person? If they do like jewelry it would be a great gift. As for me, it would just be on okay gift.

amblivion:

You're right; if it's just an 'okay gift', it's right to remember that some ppl are more into jewelry than others.

Something engraved sounds a good idea, though; I have given engraved stuff to my wife. Also for the big 18, I think maybe earrings can be a good idea, if he or she has pierced ears. Edited by farouk

Paul Bocuse

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Bocuse

here is one of my favourite recipes of his.

Wooden Leg Soup
The following recipe is for a rather full bodied, rich soup which will feed all of your friends (and probably the whole of your street too!)
Now all you have to do is open a savings account so you can save up for the ingredients, build a large kitchen in which to prepare it and whilst you're doing all this i suggest you start acquiring lots of new friends!
Or you can simply enjoy reading the recipe........enjoy!

Wooden Leg Soup

Take an earthenware soup pot or a copper one and clean it well.
Place in it a beautiful leg of beef and cover with cold water, adding salt, cloves, onions and anything else that will give it flavour.
Let it simmer on a very low flame...
Skin the soup well.
Once the soup is clear add leeks, turnips and celery.
Add 2 or 3 veal knuckles, a shoulder of pork, a turkey, a partridge, a juicy leg of lamb and a juicy beef rump.
Half an hour before serving add a couple of large chickens and moments later a lovely pork sausage loaded with truffles and pistachio nuts.
When all are beautifully cooked set one shin bone right across the soup pot so that everyone will recognise the "Wooden Leg Soup".

Bon Appetit!

Umm, I'm not Invicta! ;)
Earrings are ok for girls, NOT for guys!

(Oops, my mistake; I've corrected it!)

Re. jewelry and earrings at 18, I referred to 'if he or she has pierced ears' because, let's face it, a lot of guys have had it done by that age. It doesn't have to be earrings, though; something that they wear, with an engraving maybe. Something a bit memorable, if they like that sort of thing. Edited by farouk

I agree with the idea of a Nook or Kindle..... jewelry is good for girls, I would go more along the lines of a very nice, classic, real gold chain or bracelet that she could wear every day (but then that's the sort I am, I like simple, classic, everyday but real jewelry, when possible). Or earrings, too. A nice pair of gold hoops or simple diamond earrings.

I don't know what the budget is....nowadays I'm sure an iPad or netbook is good too....

On a smaller budget, for guys, a nice leather Daytimer (planner) is good with a nice engraved pen.

For a girl, I would suggest a charm bracelet, with a charm for her graduation and for her birthday. She could add to it during her lifetime as she has important events, or a nice pair of gold earrings. For a guy, something electronic. Congrats on the graduation of someone special to you.

The jewelry thing does seem to be worth pursing at 18, yes. As a possibility. And I agree about the hoops, at least for girls; the bigger ones, at least. For a young man with pierced ears, studs or the smaller hoops only, I would say.

The pen idea is really great, too. I did an engraving thing for my wife some years ago; so yes a pen sound good.

These are all good ideas. :)

I like the Nook or Kindle idea. Added to that, loading a few books on it would be good, too. A couple of solid Bible study books would be good, as well as the Constitution (and maybe the Federalist Papers and Anti-Federalist Papers). Those would be to keep, while the 18 year old would be able to add other books.

Ty.

Yes, a solid, as opposed to a lightweight (if I can use that term) Christian book that can be read and re-read, too, would be good.

(I'm not in the US, btw.)

Blessings.

You know what, I knew that, and had thought before that I wouldn't mention the Constitution!! :icon_mrgreen: I had decided instead to suggest getting a good book on the laws of the 18 year-old's country, or a good history of the country....ah, well, my mind is kinda scattered right now. :coffee2:

No, ppl need to learn about the US, too, definitely. The Federalist thing was by the Madison guy, I think, right. President Madison, I should say. History is very important. Especially for a young person. Sometimes a good gift edition isn't easy to come by, though; some of my books were actually obtained as used books, which don't make a good gift. (Unless from a discount store.) Jewelry is kind of more longlasting, I suppose, and he or she is likely to think of it as memorable, maybe. I'm rambling too much. Thank-you for your ideas. :)

Kitagrl:

PS: re. the bracelet thing, I saw an article about wrist tattoos that are so popular with young ladies, and it commented on the supposed suitability of the placement because they so often like to avoid having their wrist bare: if instead they can be persuaded to have a bracelet, it might be possible to ward off the ink idea. This is another reason why the bracelet idea might be particularly suitable, with an appropriate engraving: name, Bible reference, etc.

I agree about the earrings, too; they are good for young people. Edited by farouk

May I ask why tattoos and earrings continue to pervade most of your postings?
