Honesty is the best policy!

I don't think there are any stones flying around, just biblical counsel.

Thank you sir i stand corrected.

I recently read 20' date='000 Leagues Under the Sea - kids version.[/quote']

I've read several of the "kids version" books to make sure they are okay for my children. :Green

I've had Rick Warren's book "The Purpose Driven Life" ever since I saw him on the Larry King show long ago. I ordered it that very night because I liked many of the things he had to say. Later on and before I had read the book (and still haven't) I saw more bad reviews than good and just couldn't/or/wouldn't get started on it.

What do you all think of the book? Will there be a benefit in reading it? Do you have an opinion of him, also? Seemed he got too 'mega' and it went to his head but that is just my opinion.

Kathy, I've not read the book. I intend to sometime, just so I can be completely informed about it.

In my opinion, there is far more danger in reading "The Purpose Driven Life" than even someone who is a blatant heretic like Stephen King... for MANY (not all) people. For a Christian who is not grounded in their faith, I encourage some good books on Bible doctrine. Bread for the Believer would far better suit you (from Curtis Hutson) than TPDL would.

The problem is more than just "too mega", the problem is that he has built his church and doctrine on a false foundation, so everything is going to be "out of square" so to speak.

A common complaint I've seen (even among some of the more liberal, mainline churches) is that he uses about 15 different versions of the Bible to make points. Meaning, basically, that he finds the one that fits his theory.

We are supposed to let scripture change us and our way of thinking, not us change it and what God is saying through it.

Until someone is firm in their faith, I would avoid reading any allegedly Christian work, since it's become a "genre" and not a descriptive phrase, meaning "writing about Christ".

If you want to study a REAL purpose driven life, study Paul in the book of Acts. I can't tell you how much the Book of Acts is under read and under appreciated by many people.

I have a Bible Reading Schedule that let's you read the book of acts and then the corresponding epistles all as they "happen" through the book of Acts. It's a great help for those who are studying the church and it's purpose. (YOU and ME are the church, and we should have a purpose... although I like the biblical word that Christ uses: "CAUSE").

Maybe far more danger of being deceived - we know Stephen King does not represent the truth. But there is also our daily walk and fellowship with the Lord at stake. Filling your mind with the occult, with blasphemy, with graphic violence, sex, etc. is certainly detrimental to our spiritual health. Reading a novel (especially a long horror novel) will fill your mind with evil for days (unless someone is some kind of speed reader) - and depending on the person and how their mind works, these thoughts/pictures. etc. can stay with them for a long time, even years to come.

Kathie, I wanted to add this also: http://www.biblebb.com/files/tonyqa/tc03-148.htm

There are a lot of people (not all of them even close to being IFB) that have reviewed it and seen the danger of it.

A wolf in sheep's clothing is more dangerous than a wolf you can see and know... that's my point. Argue it if you would like.

I am not arguing that point - but there are two completely different things in view here. I am not afraid that Stephen King will influence most Christians' doctrine (except for a new babe that might think his view of endtimes/end of the world is right) - but there is more at stake than our doctrine - there is also our daily walk. Filling your mind with evil will have a devastating effect on your walk, even if your doctrine is all right.

You can't DO evil or be entertained by evil in your mind (Jesus says if you do that - anger and lust in your mind/heart, you are guilty of that sin) and live a life pleasing to the Lord at the same time (yes, once you put those evil thoughts/entertainment out and repent of it - but not while you are involved in it).

Two sides of the same coin of the Christian life - doctrine and practice. They go together. One without the other lining up is hypocrisy.

Jerry, you miss the simple points in your zeal to be right. You feel compelled to correct people by jot and tittle. In fact, I would suggest that probably no one else here read any implied approval into Stephen King. No one suggested Stephen King wasn't dangerous, but that Rick Warren false philosophy was FAR MORE DANGEROUS (as stated). See because I haven't seen a bunch of churches get up and have 40 days of Stephen King. I haven't seen preachers preach out of Stephen King's book.

You've taken a simple statement and extrapolated a long dissertation, with a few insinuations thrown in, and turned a thread with a simple question into a thread all about what you believe. Why not just answer her question? You'll be surprised at how pleasant life is when you don't have to correct everyone.

I didn't make any insinuations. I did my best to clarify what I was trying to say, because you seemed to be missing it. You seem to have no problems posting your opinions all over these boards, but somehow if I do it, there is a problem with you. :roll

What you are doing is called overreacting and reading into other's posts. I did not jump all over anyone - I clarified my point. Besides, if you can give your opinion of Rick Warren, I certainly can give my opinion of Stephen King's spiritual influence without feeling bad about it.

Ain't that the truth! I found one of my sister's book in the basement, and I started reading it. It was about a girl being molested, and they very graphic about it too. It stayed in my mind for a long time, and I have trouble trusting people because of that book. And sometimes when you read books, you sort of put yourself in the main character's place.

This just proves how much influence books can have in you if you let it be. (except, in my case, I knew that molestion exist, so that's why I was badly affected by that book)

nowadays, I read mostly craft, cookbooks, and sometime history books. And some children book since my son need to practice reading.

Alrighty dudes looks like i opened a can of worms.

I 've read both Warrens book (unfortunately) and I still read Stephen King occasionally.

I read the SK books purely for nostalgia (i read him in my youth). I am very aware of the inherent danger in reading his novels. They are saturated in the many things we decry. I try to overlook alot of the filthier language. But, i bear in mind garbage in garbage out.

Warrens book? That was a doozy, his intent may be in the right place. But the dudes off the mark. You wanna see somethin funny watch how the dude (Warren) waffles on certain tenets we hold dear to (ie. repentance) in his Ladies Home Journal. I have the article with credible sources cited somewhere.

Lastly, i tried to state that i was also reading Systematic Theology (Wayne Grudem) and the Bible in tandem as well. Because IMHO it matters more to me that i have a real relationship with Jesus Christ and can openly, vehemently and without apology defend my fundamental stance. Whether Roland makes it to the Tower is incidental.

God has priority here at La Casa MMD. We all are trying to figure out what it looks like to like to be in the very center of God's Will (man, woman and child).
