In Australia we call them Cooldrink

No one said tonic???? Never heard it called that until we moved to the New England area. :cool

And I've lived in NE all my life and never heard it called tonic. All I've ever heard is soda. We even had a double dutch jump rope rhyme about it.

The only time I heard someone call a carbonated drink a "tonic" was when they were referring to tonic water -- which is actually not half bad. I like Schweppes Bitter Lemon though, but I have a very hard time finding it in the States.

Phosphates.

Back in 1973 when I went to a machine school in Skokie, Illinois, there was a restaurant we went to that asked us if we wanted a phosphate with our dinner. I said, "What????????" She said it again, "Phosphate". It was their word for soft-drink, It comes from the tiny amount of phosphoric acid in it, I guess.

I'd love to see the look on a waiter/waitress' face nowadays if you ordered a soft drink by the name 'phosphate'. They'd probably make this face:

Soda to me was always the stuff that comes in those yellow boxes to make your fridge smell better. Here in PA it's Pop.

I remember going to the barber shop when I was young and there was the old chest type dispensers where you slide the coke bottles out.....similar to these....
