Speaking of Bible-holics....I'm a lifer.... got dozens of them.... all KJB since I got straightened out on manuscript evidence after 23 yrs of studying it.

Got Several Old Scofield's - Oxford editions and some others too....
Used a Thompson Chain for 10 yrs and loved it, till I found a massive printing error in it . Sent it back to Kirkbride who let me trade it in for a nice Large Print genuine leather edition....takes a forklift to get it on the table! But then years ago I had a brother point out some Micky mouse comments in the margins and study helps which really blew it for me..made me mad at my brother, studied them out and sure enough.... its got serious problems in the commentary, RV references galore and the Archeological section and particularly the Bible history section is comic strip worthy.

Got a defenders and a defined too..... not bad..... could be better, but not bad.
Love an old Scofield, but as many have said, he says some really good stuff and then he says some things that make ya wonder if he had 'episodes' :loco Really like the Old Scofield lay out, but just can't seem to get past the many marginal notes indicating Some MSS read or Older MS omit this vs or omit .... Got tired of lining through all the nonsense in them.....took me too long to fix the margin and note sections....
Got several Bearing Precious Seeds as well....nice..but not high quality to me....the paper bleeds..... the ink smudges in every one I have.....think I've got like three of'em.

Best Bible I've found in these 30 yrs [marginal references, construction and durability] are without question the Cambridge Bibles.... Highest quality of binding, paper and ink I've seen thus far. Have several, very expensive but very nice! One I'm using now is over $200 goatskin leather....very sweet. But then, how can ya 100K house, drive a $40k car, have $3000 in wardrobe and use a $20 Wal-mart Bible? Just doesn't figure to me...not that I'm rich.

Went Bible shopping once with a man who spends $100 a week on eat'n out for lunch....but he fumed over the $40 price tag on a nice Bible..... I was like .... uhh :bonk:

Shoot me....but thats me.

Right there with ya!

It's so hard to find a good quality study Bible because so many of the notes and other additions contain too much error and wackiness. I find it rather amusing sometimes when I read books where the author states he loves his Scofield, but then throughout the book he's constantly pointing out where Scofield got it wrong and correcting him. If there is so much messed up in there, why bother with it?

I used a Ryrie Study Bible for years, but the more I grew in the Lord, the more I noticed the errors and the comments about "other manuscripts" say or don't say this or that, and the "better translated" comments really began to bother me. Nice Bible, loved the layout, still have one I consider my old warhorse 'cause it's got so many of my own notes and underlinings in it.

I have several Bibles, even after donating five to the church earlier this year. I really like the Thru The Bible one from the radio program by J. Vernon McGee when it comes to just reading.

There are about a half dozen Bibles within three feet of me right now, plus some New Testaments and a couple of Bible Promise books.

My wife once asked me how many Bibles I need and I smiled and told her I'd let her know when I figured it out. :smile

I did like the Thompson Chain's reference system.....its really good....learning curve isn't too bad, but then its filled with R.V. references and recommended omissions! After a while....ya just get tired of being referred to a reference that has no bearing on the subject study and noting as you grow, that things that should be there - ain't.

If I had to recommend a "study Bible"....and I'd be reluctant to do so, I'd probably say "The Old Scofield reader's edition" with the reservation being ..... white out all the margin notes on every page (thats faster than line by line redacting, trust me, I've gone page by page and done two of them so far....takes a while) and treat the foot notes like loaded guns....cautious.

Now I tell folk, who ask, just buy a nice Cambridge, no bonded leather stuff, and study that alone....when ya think you've got a lot of it settled, then get a Matthew Henry or John Gill commentary....Spurgeon's treasury of David, and his Parables and miracles of our Lord....then start over...... that ought to do ya for 20 yrs or so......

I do like that "Soul Winner's NT" for door knocking.....

I just use my chain reference for the references. I, too have found that sometimes there are verses that don't seem to fit. But, by and large it has been a help when I or one of my guys wants to find a verse in a subject pretty quickly.

I like the trees, too.

Yes...the chain system is very good isnt it.... I still grab mine once in a blue moon..... I find that I prefer now the "Treasury of Scripture Knowledge" is much better....at least in my sermon prep.

Is that the online one or is it in book form? We don't have internet access at home, so we're just old-fashioned book users.

Hmmmm - sounds like something that would make a good Christmas present for my hubby!! Thanks for the idea!

The only thing I can find is the Treasury of David, which we already have. That's not the same thing, is it?

No ma'm, it is completely a different animal....might recommend as well, CH Spurgeon's "Miracles & Parables of our Lord" 3 volume set. If he enjoyed the Treasury of David, he'll be doing cartwheels over this set of three books. They're all three hammers. Got to watch the Calvinistic nonsense Spurgeon held to....but otherwise, excellent.

I personally us the Scofield and am pleased with it for the most part, but, as it seems with most of what's out there, you will find errors. I've been to get the study bible put out by the Sword of the Lord and check it out as a good pasor friend of mine likes his. Any input on that particular study Bible??

Don't know much about that one, but am told the Rock of Ages Prison Ministry has put one out thats pretty sharp...have not seen it yet....but some have said it's good.....very good. I'll probably stay flip-flopping back an forth between my old Scofield and my Cambridge.....

Well, the Companion Bible and its appendixes has always given me some great delights. I was given a Dake Bible and for its size it intimidated me at first, but then, if you are given to word lists studies, that Bible might thrill you.

I have always been partial to my wide margin Cambridge that has years of studies and notes written in there.

God bless,

Calvary
