I like Lewis Sperry Chafer's Systematic Theology better than William Evans Great Doctrines. You can pick up the whole set now for only 50 bucks on Christianbook.com

Here's a link.

I found this book on doctrines at a used book store. Pretty much the same of William Evan's stuff.

Link:

Great Find :ideas:
I appreciate the information and it would be a great value at this price! I intend to have it for my personal library for reading and reference. I previewed Chafer's book at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0825423 ... ib_dp_ptu#
It appears to be much deeper than Evan's book and more toward the exhaustive. It would be great if someone in a study group had a copy for reference and further/added explanation.

The intent with Evan's book is:
First, cost, I didn't want to burden anyone with cost. (it's free at the OP link)
Second, availability to everyone online. (mark up and taking notes - some don't like to mark hard copy).
Third, I consider Evans a primer based on the familiarity I have with it. Someone, may want to dive deeper into theology and doctrines after they get a feel for it.
Fourth, and most important, I hoped for equal footing for everyone here, for the following:
a. Grounded in our doctrines for the purpose of soul winning and personal evangelism.
b. Everyone to be on equal footing for the spammer attacks, which will only increase.
c. Key and center, a greater knowledge and intimacy with our God, Savior, and Lord.

I hope I have not discouraged you. You could be that person in the group with the additional reference comments!

I'm very much interested in doctrine but I'm lacking in time to make a major committment right now and I very much dislike reading books and such on the internet and even find it rather difficult to do so.

John,
I understand and I continue to mention you in my prayers.

I too felt internet reading was a drudgery. Several times I said to family I wish I had a hard copy of "A History of American Christianity." The online text version converted to "MS word" was 265 pages, the original book was over 400. It was sometimes difficult to keep going. I had to be right there at the computer, maybe a laptop would have made it easier. My downloaded/converted copy of Evans is approx. 145 pages but, the number of pages in the example I gave was less than, 2 and a half pages. Also, the scripture references could be copied to paper and carried off with your Bible for reading and study.

If a study group was successful and people felt it a blessing maybe it could be instituionalized as a continuing option. So folks could jump in any time at any point. I expect others not directly involved would want to comment in any discussion at OB anyway.

I'm sure I could not keep up facilitating forever. Maybe we could have one of the pastors here give an "online facilitator ordination" to those who take it and let others facilitate a follow-on.

Without comments from you and others, I could never make all the considerations for an undertaking like this. It is bigger than I thought it would be. If someone had a computer text file course outline and sylabus it would be an exceptional blessing to me. Then I could modify down the segments into manageable content per comments here.

I would be interested. I am always interested in studying God's word. Timing could turn out to be a problem though. How are you suggesting we handle the logistics of this "study group"?

Meet at your house on Fridays, OK?

There would be no logistics.
1. We read the material.
2. We meet on line on a selected day/time (here I hope).
3. We discuss any difficulties or questions while online.
4. We bring answers from references for #3 if we can get them.
5. We assign our memory verses - reading specific (from the textbook or we agree on others).
6. We agree on length of next section or add time for current assignment.
7. We take all unresolved questions as a project to resolve at the next meeting.
8. We need some kind of hand in the air/person has the floor policy for meetings.
9. Anyone is welcome to join the discussions but must abide by #8.
10. We type slow while in the meeting...I type with four fingers.

Just kidding about Fridays at your house

Did you know you could download a free copy of THE GREAT DOCTRINES OF THE BIBLE, By REV. WILLIAM EVANS, Ph.D., D.D. for free?

Here is the link: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/6038

If you download use the ?Plain text? and ?main site? for either the ?zip? or ?none? compression; I used none compressed and it was fairly quick on DSL.

This book is available to purchase. I have a copy in my home library and used it for a first year Bible Doctrines course at a Fundamental Baptist Bible Institute. It is a classic for the study of Bible Doctrines. However, the free download is a blessing and its not copyrighted in the United States.

I wonder if any would be interested in downloading a copy and joining me for a group study using this text. We could have reading assignments each week, divide the doctrines up into manageable segments, have some scripture memorization to nail the doctrines down, and then maybe meet here to discuss any difficulties we encounter. We could take questions to our own pastors during the week if we prefer. There are enough pastors and school graduates here at OB for answers to any questions we may have. The Administrator and Moderators could oversee our learning and possibly allow us to use the ?Chat Room? feature for weekly discussion. It would be great if we had a pastor to participate each week.

It?s a great opportunity to learn something that could help us in our Bible study and personal witnessing for Christ. Also, it?s a great knowledge base to refute false doctrines. Does anyone believe they would be interested? If so, let?s ask Matt if he would mind hosting this on OB.

Here is a sample of the book outline and some text:

THE DOCTRINES OF SALVATION

A. REPENTANCE.
B. FAITH.
C. REGENERATION.
D. JUSTIFICATION.
E. ADOPTION.
F. SANCTIFICATION.
G. PRAYER.

THE DOCTRINES OF SALVATION.

I. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE DOCTRINE.
II. THE NATURE OF REPENTANCE.
1. AS TOUCHING THE INTELLECT.
2. AFFECTING THE EMOTIONS.
3. WILL.
a) Confess Sin.
B) Forsake Sin.
c) Turn to God.
III. HOW REPENTANCE IS PRODUCED.
1. DIVINE SIDE.
2. HUMAN SIDE.
3. QUESTION OF MEANS.
IV. RESULTS OF REPENTANCE.
1. GODWARD.
2. MANWARD.

A. REPENTANCE.

I. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE DOCTRINE.

The prominence given to the doctrine of Repentance in the Scriptures can hardly be overestimated. John the Baptist began his public ministry, as did Jesus also, with the call to repentance upon his lips (Matt. 3:1, 2; 4:17).

It sure is too bad Philip didn't have this.

The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

33In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

34And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

34.5 And Philip pulled a scroll out of his pack and read unto the eunuch:

NOPE

35Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

36And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

37And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

38And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him

Its time to get this in gear. I'm pulling as much together tonight as possible and will provide details in another thread tomorrow. I will email everyone via the OB email send but, I need to make sure Matt is aware and provide him details first.

Dave, is it alright if we follow along reading the material etc and not participate on the online discussions. I'm in a different time zone and what's good for most will more than likely not work for me.
