Jesus said in [bible]Mark 16:15[/bible] Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Being homebound I am limited at getting out in the world, but I am connected to the net, and it goes into "all the world", so I presume that is what He meant. I discuss and debate Jews, Muslims, and others. I have come up with a question I hope you can help me with.

[bible]Matthew 5:17[/bible] says Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

I got into a debate with an orthodox Jew who confronted me with Where were the prophecies, not in the Tanach.

Tanakh is the Hebrew Bible. The acronym is based on the initial Hebrew letters of each of the text?s three parts:

1. Torah, meaning ?Instruction,? is the first five books of the Old Testament.
2. Nevi?im , meaning ?Prophets,? is associated with anything to do with the prophets.
3. Ketuvim, meaning ?Writings? or ?Hagiographa.?

As I understand it, the Hebrew Bible includes some of the Prophetical Books in the Old Testament, but they add some more. Do they not include any of the OT's Prophetical Books?

What is the correspondence between Ketuvim and books in the OT?

What prophecies, in your opinion, was Christ referring to in [bible]Matthew 5:17[/bible]?

Once I address that, I will begin to dispute this. If you have any hints, let me know.

In the end, a Christian must stick to the Scriptures and not delve into the various books and traditions of others.

Some Jews like to bring up their other "holy" books. Orthodox and Catholics tend to bring up their Traditions. Sometimes they also refer to the Apocryphal books or even the writings and sayings of their "saints".

If we allow ourselves to get caught up in all of these our focus upon Scripture and the true message of Christ becomes lost.

Notice how the Apostles constantly referred to Scripture. Christ quoted from what we call our Old Testament books.

I used to get involved in may discussions and debates on various internet forums. Typically, those we end up debating are not there to learn, but to argue. Once the Lord finally brought this clearly to my attention I changed the manner of my posting. Rather than debate or discuss with the idea of convincing the one I was debating, I instead posted with the intent of reaching those others who would be reading the debate.

Stick to Scripture, stick to facts, and maintain a calm and reasoned approach in your postings. Your main "audience" that you may be able to reach will pick up on your consistency and your factual, reasoned nature.

If one hopes to reach those of other faiths it is important to be familiar with their holy book(s), just as if they hope to carry on a discussion with me they need to be familiar with KJV.

That is exactly what I am asking. What is the relationship between our OT and the Hebrew Tanach?

Yeah, I have a copy of the Tanach on my computer and it appears to include all the same books just divided differently and in a different order. I believe they've altered many of the OT passages and claim God was referring to Israel and not Christ. Take a look at Isaiah 53 below with commentary. You'll notice that the commentary replaces Christ with the nation of Israel. You'll notice also an attitude of self righteousness. They wicked are not all of mankind (including the Jews) but it is just referring to Gentiles.

I saw a program some years ago where a born-again Jew showed how the Jewish leaders had changed the way they interpret many passages in order to make them point AWAY from Christ.

Of course, all false religions (even those that claim to use some or all of the Scriptures; such as Jews, Mormons, JWs, etc.) point away from Christ.

That reminds me of how Muhammad plagiarized much from Jewish texts and Christian ones, twisting things a little (or a lot considering what the Qur'an says about Christ), and then saying your texts foretold that I (Muhammad) would appear. The Jewish and Christian tribes did not agree with him, so the (fallen) Angel (Satan) dictating the Qur'an to Muhammad then dictated the part about killing those that do not accept Islam, and he killed those Jewish and Christian tribes. At least the Jewish leaders reinterpreting passages did not invent a requirement to kill.

The Tanach has all the same books the Old Testament has' date=' some are named differently though.[/quote']Thanks, Danny, and thanks for pointing me here. I knew Torah was the first five books of OT, but I was not sure about Tanach.

As you know, our Children's Image has a lot of Christian reference programs on it, but we include a Torah program and also a Qur'an, which lets us say it is "multi-cultural" and get it in schools that would otherwise reject the religious programs. One of the guys that worked with me at Bethesda Boys Ranch had a boy that rejected the Christian teachins the ranch provided, saying he was a Muslim. Jim read some of the Qur'an from our machines and found where it said Jesus was a Messenger of Allah, and showed it to the kid, who agreed Jesus must be an important Prophet. Jim then said let me show you in another book where Jesus said in [bible]John 14:6[/bible] I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me and was able to save the kid.

I have read a small book written by a man who was a Muslim but became a Christian after reading the Koran and finding many verses that pointed him to Christ!!! He lists the verses and the reasoning he used to begin studying the Bible! I can't remember the name, but if you are interested, I will look at home and post it another time. It really was a fascinating read! I sent a copy to a friend of mine who has a Muslim neighbor - we are hoping and praying that reading this book will at the very least begin to open his eyes to the truth of the gospel (which he has heard from my friends more than once!).
