I recently listened to an evangelist (recorded from a nearby church having a revival). His message was great, but it seemed like he was wanting an "Amen" every other statement.

I've heard a couple preachers like that. Very distracting and really inhibits the flow of the sermon. If the preacher didn't hear an "amen" after every sentence or point he would fish for them until he got one loud enough or the amount of them he thought he needed to hear.

Exactly, takes away from the flow of the sermon.
