Recently a friend invited me to join facebook, so I did. But I don't see what the big deal is about it. Are many people here members of it, and if so, what is the benefit of it?

Well I use face book I contact some people that way but I know my sister uses it to get in contact with some of the youth that don't attend the youth group she works with It has some really neat things on it I got both my sister and her husband to use it. You can also contact other people who are Christians and encourage them I have met a few people that way and they have been blessed with what I wrote.

I don't use it all the time but I'm on it and I like it. It's probably the best-organized social network I've seen. People can't clutter up their sites like Myspace or Xanga or whatever, because you can't do layouts. Everyone has the same thing... white background with little blue modules for putting information in.

Anyhow, Facebook is a great site. It's so easy to keep your information private. :smile

Can you elaborate a little on what it is and how it works? Is it free? I know several people that talk about it, but I really don't know what it is about.

I have joined a couple of sites where you can supposedly contact Classmates, etc. - but they are useless unless you pay their fees - all you can see is the names listed, but you have to pay to send emails to them (so if you can't contact them, it defeats the purpose of it!). I have no desire to pay a monthly fee to perhaps contact one or two people who MIGHT be on the list and have a desire to contact me 20 years later.

Oh, those sites are Classmates.com or Reunion.com. I don't like them... almost everyone uses the free sites like Facebook or Myspace or whatever now.

Facebook is a completely free site. You just sign up and put whatever info about yourself that you want to on there. It has all kinds of features like Facebook notes, where you can put up blogs.

It also has a "groups" feature that allows you to join groups (like blogrings) and meet people that believe the same way you do about anything. (just do a search on whatever and you can usually find a group to match... or you could even create one if you want and see how many people join... it's really fun!)

*edit*

I forgot to add that on Facebook, you're required to use a real name (not just "Bibleman" or whatever lol), unlike Myspace or Xanga. So if you're looking for someone, you can do a search on their real name (if they're not using some kind of alias like "John Doe" :Bleh ), and see if they have a Facebook account, and then add them as a friend if you want to.

Ok, I have one lonely friend on there, and today I got an invite for another friend, but I don't know the person from Adam. Why would someone want me to be their "friend" if they don't know me?

That's happened to me before. I just ignore the person if I don't know them. Maybe they're one of those people that randomly adds friends (I've run into those kind before), or they thought they knew you.

One time someone who had the same name as me tried to add me. I didn't accept her invitation but it was funny.

Well, I joined it - looked for one old friend (my best friend when I was in grades 11-12), and found him. The last time I saw or heard from him was about 10-11 years ago, and he was quite confused spiritually (and angry at the confusion), so we lost touch. I am hoping he has sorted things out by now or that I am in a better place to help him now. I emailed him yesterday, but he has not replied yet.
