Country music has always included gospel music. Here is an album of country gospel music.

And here is one of the most beautiful songs. It was a slave song included in a collection of songs and published in   Slave Songs of the United States in 1867. Pretty much forgotten it was revived in the movie, "Oh,Brother, Where Art Thou?"

In the churches I've been in that have Country Gospel music, I don't recall much, if ANY, "Southern Gospel" (usually African Amerircan) gospel music. There are SOME songs that do intertwine in the two genre's, but they are distinctly different. Here again is an attempt by BB to distort facts.

What do you mean BrotherTony? I am a person that loves music and even I tend to intertwine the two, as there is not much a difference.

Not sure how BB is in error here… ?

It must be regional then. In Illinois I was very involved in the Country Gospel scene, and we did have some old Negro spirituals that were added in, but they weren't in the same "style" of say the African Methodist Episcopal churches in the area. It was the same in Georgia, SC and AL. They are different.  It was COUNTRY...He's trying to make the comparison of styles, not words. We were even taught the differences in styles in Bible college. These are two distinctly different styles of music. That's how he is in error.

You know, I’m still confused. I don’t see the comparison that you say he is making.

But it is good to know ‘country’ and ‘slave negro’ are two different genres of gospel. How do I dispel the differences between them?

The differences in musical styles are a good place to start. If you cannot distinguish between the way the two different groups sing, especially with the music background you state you have, no offense intended but, I can't help you. Here again I will refer  people to a good book by Kent Brandenburg called "Sound Music or Sounding Brass.

It's probably considered racist or cultural appropriation to sing these spirituals now so I'd watch out.

I don't see where it would be racist. Mentioning the two different styles is a fact and clearly visible by comparison of the two different groups. I wouldn't be racist anyhow since I have several black people in my family, especially my beloved great-niece.

I'm being sarcastic but yeah, they'll say white people shouldn't sing those tunes. Give it time. They're even now saying if you use a canoe you are racist.

The first post from WND isn't giving a typical characterization. It's a very limited number of people I know who do this kind of thing. Most will convert the music to their style of music, not trying to mimic the others genre.

As far as using a canoe goes...I haven't been in one since our church canoe outing back in the late 70s. I wanted to buy one several years back, but my wife wanted a fishing boat. We've bought neither. Maybe one day! LOL I don't think using a canoe makes me a racist...Native American's used them....so I guess I'm in pretty good company. I know several black groups that take canoe trips as well! LOL

I think your being dense. No offense. I asked you a question because I was interested in the different styles since you are were being strong worded against BB, And I actually don’t understand.

There are several different musical genres, which I have always categorized under ‘country’.  We have Blue grass, Appalachian,  Western, Negro blues, and Slave Songs. Now all the types of music have Christian Gospel songs, and they all have influenced one another in either instruments or lyrics.
My question to you is, how do you discern them? Notice, BB and I are not talking about “spirituals” or “southern Gospel” which are obviously different.

Thank you for the clarification. BB didn't even make that clarification. Southern Gospel is indeed different especially in the fact that this is actually the type of music that many churches in the South, and some in the North are using. They are more the "quartet" type of music. Some believe that this type of music started with Everette Beverly in the 1870s, but there is no direct proof of this. Many Country and Western groups were started out of this type of music, as well as from Bluegrass bands, etc.

Most of the African American churches I have been in sing the "Negro Spirituals" which are pretty much akin to Rock-and-Roll meets jazz meets bluegrass and blues! Most churches that are predominantlyl caucasian in membership don't find this type of music particularly appealing for a church service. Having attended many African American churches in Peoria, IL and in Augusta, Ga, I'm not really bothered by this, as it is a cultural difference as well as a musical diffentiation.

Contemporary Christian music...well, most of us know what this music is as it has infiltrated most churches of ANY denomination.

And for clarification, I was being direct with BB, not harsh. I try not to be harsh with anyone, but, I do admit that at times my direct approach can be abrasive.

It only takes one person. It was one 15 year old girl who complained about Kate Smith's statue and they tore it down. It started with one college girl that eventually led to all the statues in Charlottesville, VA getting torn down including the Lewis and Clark statue.

Only because people are ignorant...they blindly follow CRT, BLM, the National Socialist Democrats, etc. I'm not going to worry about what someone thinks when I tell the truth. Never have...never will. But, thanks for the warning! ?

Down By the Riverside (Lyrics)

I'm gonna lay down heavy load, down by the riverside, down by the riverside, down by the riverside
I'm gonna lay down heavy load, down by the riverside and I ain't a gonna study war no more

I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more
I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more

I'm gonna lay down my sword and shield, down by the riverside
Down by the riverside, down by the riverside
I'm gonna lay down my sword and shield, down by the riverside
And I ain't gonna study war no more

I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more
I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more

I'm gonna put on my traveling shoes, down by the riverside
Down by the riverside, down by the riverside
I'm gonna put on my traveling shoes, down by the riverside
And I ain't gonna study war no more

I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more
I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more

I'm gonna put on my long white robe, down by the riverside
Down by the riverside, down by the riverside
I'm gonna put on my long white robe, down by the riverside
And I ain't gonna study war no more

I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more
I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more

I’m gonna put on my starry crown, down by the riverside
Down by the riverside, down by the riverside
I’m gonna put on my starry crown, down by the riverside
And I ain’t gonna study war no more

I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more, I ain't gonna study war no more
