Primitive Baptists

I have read a lot of conflicting information about the Primitive Baptists.  Some sources say that they are Calvinist and other sources say they are not.  I have read that many of them sing Sacred Harp and that they are very minimalist and separatist, which I like.  There is a Primitive Baptist church tucked way back down an old dirt road not too far from my house that I was considering visiting.

Has anyone here had any experience with them?

My grandmother was a Primitive Baptist, and we have several Primitive Baptist churches in our area. I can only speak of what I know of them...

They hold service(s) only once a month. From what I understand, back MANY years ago (horse and buggy days)...when there was only one pastor in an area...he would travel to a different church each week. Why they still do that today, I don't know.

They are Calvinistic...they may not use the word, but their doctrine lines up with Calvinism.

They sing Sacred Harp.

But Sacred Harp is fun. I'd go just for that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_Harp

Interestingly, if you read Hebrews 10:25 closely Christians should be congregating even more as the Second Coming gets closer. Yet, you see them getting together even less. Sundays and Wednesday might not cut it anymore. But good luck with that.

Don't forget that many Baptist churches get together Thursdays and Saturdays for visitation and soul winning.  That would make four days a week. My sending church in Kalamazoo, MI has a men's prayer time at 6 am on Mondays and a ladies study on Thursdays or Fridays as well! So some churches are getting together more than twice a week and are having good luck with it. :)

Some are but the vast majority of Christians probably are not.

I would agree; most churches usually only get together on Wednesday evenings and twice on Sundays.  What I am interested in is finding out what the Primitive Baptists believe.  If they're Calvinist or practice the TULIP thing, I will not be joining them.  I suppose the only way to know for sure is to pay them a visit.

So you rely on luck rather than the Holy Spirit?

Knowing John Young personally, I know that he does not rely on luck. John Young used that phrase the same way a lot of folks use the phrase. By the context of his posting, and his dedication to the Lord in service, it is very obvious that he trusts in the Lord and not in luck.

"Primitive Baptists believe the most beautiful and only scriptural instrument for use in New Testament worship is the human voice.  All singing is conducted a cappella (without instruments).  " It has always seemed strange to me that a long-time friend of ours is a Bluegrass music lover, performer, yet he's a member of a PB church. As a matter of fact his brother, also a PB, once hosted an annual Bluegrass festival at our town. My friend sings all those old hymns, spirituals an Gospel songs while picking his guitar accompanied with banjo, fiddle, bass fiddle, mandolin etc. But about PB, what turns me off the most is the Calvinism.

When I was around the age of 12, my grandmother took me to her church's Sacred Harp Singing school. It was a one-week course where they taught us how to "sing the notes". They called it "Fa So La Singing". I didn't want to go, but my parents made me...and I actually ended up enjoying it. I can still remember one of the training songs to this day...

Fa Sol La FaFaFa Sol La FaFa Fa Sol La...

FaSolLaFa, FaSolLaFa, Fa Sol La FaFaFa...

Hear the ringing,

What's the matter,

Smell the smoke, and hear the clatter...

Fire, Fire, Fire, Fire, Firrrrrre...

Pour on water, Pour on waterrrrrrr.

Of course back then, I was oblivious to their theological beliefs...but the singing was great. :)

Looks like we've lost our smiley faces here again!

Context is an important part of an online conversation. Also my smile face " :) " shows I am playing on the words. Your question needs a winking face after it like this " ;) ".
