Duct-Taped Smiles (A Mother’s Day Poem) As a mother, you reminisce over the many winding roads you’ve travelled; Filled with wonder and with joy, though at times your threads seem a little frayed and tangled; But the Lord has paved your path with love over each and every weary mile - The cracked pottery of your life is covered with bandaged elbows and duct-taped smiles. Each day of motherhood is like a book, with the pages a little tattered, a little torn; By gleaning God’s wisdom through the years, those rough edges have softened and become a little worn; The cover is more faded now, and you see some new creases here and there, But the joy of bein…

Shine Your Light Shine Your light into my soul, dear Lord; Like Moses, I long to see Your glory. Shine the Truth into the hearts of men, Enlighten them to the Gospel story. Illumine my spirit through Your Word, Open my clouded eyes that I may see - Then shine brightly through my life to others - May they catch fiery glimpses of You in me. Change my heart by Your radiant glory: Dispel the shadows that are a part of me; Transform my soul through Your Holy Spirit; Remove the dross of my sin - make me free. Shine Your light into my life, Lord Jesus. Like a glowing jewel, burn intensely through me. …

From Broken To Beautiful From broken to beautiful; Made with the Potter’s own hands, Transformed into gold and silver - Part of God’s wondrous plan. Vessels of the Lord’s mercy, Of His forgiveness and His grace; From a past of brokenness To true beauty in its place. Once separated from God’s family, Now adopted as a child of the King; Precious treasure in earthen vessels - To the Lord, worth more than anything. Vessels of honour, fit for the Master, Sanctified, forgiven, and set free; From forsaken to accepted in His sight - Beloved, and transformed for eternity. From broken to beautiful, Given a new purpose for His glory…

Here’s a poem that I attempted to fit together the idea of being grateful for God’s forgiveness and remembering what He has done for us on Calvary (ie. thinking on these things in light of the Lord’s Supper - which my church will partake of in the evening service this coming Sunday). Thanks to my friend Gary for the suggestion (of the first idea). A Call To Remembrance I’ll never forget all the things You’ve done for me; How You died on the cruel cross of Calvary; You redeemed me from my sin and set me free; Now Lord Jesus, I am Yours eternally. I was a black sheep that had wandered astray; As a Good Shepherd, You sought me that day; You rescued m…

Martha And Mary Martha and Mary, two sisters together one day. Each sought to follow Jesus in their own unique way; Martha was so busy still, but Mary would not be dismayed: She wanted to spend time with her Master - with Jesus, come what may. Nothing wrong with serving, but what is the end goal of your life? Do you desire the Saviour more than the bustle and the strife? Would you rather be so focussed, with everything placed so neat - Or does your spirit and soul crave to worship at His feet? In all of our opportunities, with each day that we face, What’s the outcome, what’s the priority, when everything finds its place? Did we seek to spen…

More Than Enough Mankind is always seeking for some lasting substance to be found; Everywhere the heart can glean, he thinks valuable treasures will abound; But it seems of the world’s riches, there is never enough to go around - With all that I have in Christ, the Word of God clearly resounds: More than enough wisdom to guide me in His sight, More than enough strength for these battles that I fight, More than enough truth - in fact, the Lord is my Light! Whatever I face in this life, Jesus Christ is more than enough. More than enough new mercies to help me through each day, More than enough forgiveness when my steps lead me astray, More tha…

This poem was written for my pastor and his wife for Christmas. Jesus In You Day by day, and throughout all the years, You both taught us by faith what was right and true; You modelled our Saviour in word and in deed - We learned so much about Jesus through you. Faithfully trusting and serving our Saviour; We are amazed by all that our God can do Through those who follow in the footsteps of faith - We know we can see Jesus living in you. Through the years, I’m sure you’ve entertained angels; By your example, we know our hearts grew too; You showed compassion in your care for us all - We see Jesus loving others through you. You sh…

You know how people are always passing on certain blessings - like, May the road always rise to meet you, etc., etc.? Well, here is my attempt at a Biblical blessing poem: Be Strong And Of A Good Courage “Be strong and of a good courage,” My child, “Fear not, nor be afraid,” saith the Lord. May your life be filled to the brim with His promises, Overflowing with hope and wisdom gleaned from God’s Word. Jesus is your Shepherd who will lead and guide you; He will walk beside you every step of the way; He will lift you up and carry you there in His arms, Bring you back close beside Him whenever you stray. There is so much the Lord wants to do f…

My Prayer For Sanctuary I need a quiet place, Lord, where I can get away; Where I can seek Your face, as I kneel to pray; Somewhere there’s a refuge, away from the world outside, Where I can be at peace, Lord, as I’m walking by Your side. I need a Sanctuary, my own hiding place, Somewhere I can get away and daily seek your grace; A place of peace and solitude, a place to call my own - Where I can focus on my Saviour, and spend time with Him alone. A place I can put my worries away up on a shelf; A place of joy and comfort, where I can be myself. A solace and a refuge, Lord, a haven in Your sight; A shelter from this world - my own harbour …

Here is a new Christmas poem I wrote. I wanted to tackle it from a slightly different perspective - and this one is from the perspective of the gifts given by the wise men and what they mean. The Gift Of Myrrh The wise men came to Bethlehem, Came to worship the young Child; They brought their gifts to offer Him - Jesus, the Saviour, so meek and mild. Each of the treasures the wise men gave Told of great riches they had in store; Though worth much to this poor family, What they symbolized was so much more. The wise men brought to Him their gold - Oh what a precious offering. A fitting tribute for this Child Who was born the King of kin…

I was intrigued last Sunday by the last passage my pastor quoted in his sermon on Missions - Romans 10:9-13. How Shall They Call? In a world that is blinded by darkness, Men’s souls that are shadowed by night, We shine out among those around us - To the lost and perishing, we are the light. How shall they call unless they hear the truth. How shall they respond unless they know; How shall they ever hear the Gospel, Unless someone here tells them so. Jesus Christ paid the price that was needed To redeem mankind back from their sin; The Holy Spirit came to this world, So that lost man could be born again. But how shall they call unl…

Walking on the Water With Jesus Walking boldly on the water with Jesus, Knowing the waves are under His full control; Having sure footing in the midst of the storm, Oh, the joy and wonder that thrills my soul. Stepping out in faith is so amazing, Though this situation seems almost unreal; I’m the only one brave enough to stand on the waves, Imagine what all these fishermen must feel. But looking out upon the deep is very daunting - The wind is scattering the clouds across the sky; Slowly, I’m beginning to sink in the water; Faltering, “Lord, save me” is all I can cry. Immediately Jesus stretched forth His hand and caught me, He held…

This poem is based on Exodus 17 - the account of Aaron and Hur helping Moses win the battle by lifting up his hands. Lift Up Their Hands Lift up the hands that have fallen down, Oh, my brethren, strengthen the feeble knees… But what if it’s your hands that have grown weaker, What if it’s you that falters in times like these? What if your hands are feeling too heavy for you, What if the burdens you carry seem too much to bear, What if your soul is overwhelmed by your own struggles, Where are those dear friends to lift you up in prayer? Lord Jesus, bring an Aaron alongside their path, To walk beside them and lift up their hands. They’re fa…

There Were None Like These In the time of the kings of Israel, Way back in the olden days, There were kings who made a difference, With their righteous or wicked ways. There are lessons we can glean from, Oh, listen to me now, if you please - In a Book filled with true examples, Good or bad - there were none like these. From the northern tribes, we had king Ahab, From the southern, king Manasseh, These two kings tore apart their kingdoms, Filled them with their unrighteous ways. With all the evil that they pursued, And all their abominable idolatries, For utter destruction to their kingdoms - No remedy was left - there were none like t…

Choosing To Guard My Heart And Mind I made a covenant with my eyes, Upon virtuous things my mind is stayed; When temptation comes a-calling, The decision has already been made. Like prisoners of war, I’ve taken captive The thoughts that roam this land; When an invading army comes to battle, I know, I’ve already made my stand. Though I am walking in the flesh, I choose not to war that way; Your Word is hidden in my heart, Before the enemy comes to stay. I give all my cares to my Captain, And He gives me His peace within; Guarding my heart in this warfare - In Jesus, the victory I will win. I will put on Your whole armour - …

Proofreading a chapter on James Chalmers, the missionary to the savages and cannibals in Papua New Guinea, and I came across the statement Hudson Taylor said to him. The quotes are actual statements by missionaries or preachers of the past. I like this missionary poem a looooot more. Hope you do too. Go Forward On Your Knees How brave and sure were those missionaries of old, Those faithful prayer warriors - they were so bold; Courageously saying, “Give me souls or I die!” “Go forward on your knees” was their fervent battle cry. “God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply.” Go forward bo…

Blazing A Trail God’s Way Way back in olden times, in the pioneer days, “Go West, Young man,” was an often heard phrase. Go make your own mark, go blaze your own trail - In the eyes of the world you will never fail. But the way to make a difference in the eyes of the Lord Is to base your whole life upon the truths found in God’s Word. Jesus is the Author of your faith - He’s already blazed the way; Follow closely in His footsteps, cling to Him every day. “I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” you’ll never walk alone; He has a plan and a purpose that you can call your very own; He will provide all things that will need to serve Him fai…

I really do love the hymn, Just As I Am, that tells about salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ. There is nothing we need to bring to Him to save us - just repentance of our sins (ie. a change of mind about our sins that we see them as wicked in His sight and we no longer desire them the way we did before - we want the Saviour instead) and faith in His shed blood and finished work upon the cross of Calvary. Unfortunately, to many in the religious world, Just As I Am becomes a creed to justify staying as we are - no change, no repentance, nothing different - but somehow still saved and Heaven bound! When we sang this song as our closing hymn in church yesterday, I was thinkin…

Here are three poems written at two very different points in my life - as a lost teenager (or perhaps when I was 20 - it was from a binder of poems that I found with things I had written up until 1990) and as a new Christian. While they may be a little cheesy, I like the attempts at making acrostic poems with every letter of the alphabet, and the contrast in worldviews presented in each. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ changed everything, including my outlook on life, my priorities, and my eternal destiny! Now I have a spiritual prize worth striving for that I know I can reach, not some airy phantom or dream that has no meaning. The third one I wrote recently, basically as…

Because You Passed My Way My load's a little lighter now, Because you passed my way - The sun's a little brighter And the clouds have passed away. I've found my Saviour nearer, And each day He grows still dearer And I'm on my way to Glory, Because you passed my way. I was lost and no one seemed to care Until you passed my way, You saw me, and led me to Christ Oh, what a happy day, Now I'm living all for Jesus, And with Him I'll be some day, For I found a new beginning, Because you passed my way. And when in realms of glory, I see His precious face, And hear the angel voices Within that heavenly place, I'll rememb…

FEAR My friend went on ahead And left me here To walk my last, long mile Alone; and Fear Stepped to his vacant place And said that he Would walk with me, and my Companion be. And so he dogged my steps In this dark vale Where death's wings shadow me. My face grew pale, My spirit quailed. I called One precious Name In my distress, and lo, That loved One came! He closely holds my hand, This tender Friend, Nor will He let me go Until the end. And as He walks with me, Daily more dear, I find that trust and love Have cast out Fear. I wrote this poem to encourage a believer in my church (and his family) who is currently facing the battle with cancer and radiation treatments. I wanted to remind him where he came from (spiritually), as well as where his victory comes today - without getting specific on the healing of his cancer, as I do not presume to know God's will - but wanted to emphasize the strength that comes from trusting in the Lord and the willingness to fight the battles He gives us. Facing Your Goliath You followed the Lord out of Egypt, Buried your old master in the Red Sea, Wandered around in the wilderness, Knowing your Redeemer has made you free. Crossed over the flo…

The Darkness Is Passing Away The shadow of death will turn to morning like the breaking of the day, Our trials will turn to blessings in God’s own wondrous way; These light afflictions are for a moment, then they too will pass away, When the brightness of His glory is here forevermore to stay. Though the shadows overwhelm you, and you can’t see the path ahead, At times the storm clouds gather round you, and frighten you with their dread; Jesus will turn your mourning into dancing; your sorrow and pain will pass away – The bright Morning Star is coming soon – with the dawning of a brand new day. One day, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, …

My son was separated from the Coast Guard after 11 years of service, because he refused to take the jab. Here is his poem. The Sea I’ll miss your sounds, your salty breeze, Your unforgiving ways. Your soothing calm, your angry tease, Your glorious crashing waves. It’s been bittersweet my gorgeous mistress, Though often unforgiving. I’ve seen your rage, embraced your kiss, I offer my humble thanksgiving. You have my blood, my sweat, and my tears, Still I’ll offer one last treasure. Calloused my hands, helped conquer my fears, Now my boots are yours forever. Your soothing rock, through trough and crest, Have…

Only In Jesus The eternal God is your refuge, Holding you up, keeping you close. There’s a comfort in His presence Only the child of faith truly knows. Peace that passeth all understanding, Guarding your spirit and your mind; Assurance from the heart of God, That only the trusting soul can find. Underneath are His everlasting arms; Lifting you up from the miry clay, Covering you with His sheltering wings, Giving you the strength you need each day. Only in Jesus is that perfect peace, Only in Jesus can you find that rest, That yoke, walking side by side with Him - In the hands of the Saviour you are blessed. Only in Jesus. …
