SS and or SSD is not living off of the government as you seem to think.

Each person pays money in that has been earned from the sweat of their own labors. Those who do not pay into it, many of them live off the government in the form of SSI which used be called welfare which is a government handout, of which they have not paid one penny into. I know of several around these parts who are on SSI, for they refused to pay into SS. But of course most of them are on it because their unable to work due to disabilities and or age, without it they would starve, which is what many would want to happen to them.

SS and SSD is not a plan that lets people live high on the hog, in fact its just a plan of which people just barely have money to eat and live, that is survive.

You ought to try being disabled sometime, its not all its built up to be. I would love nothing better than to get out and work with my hands as I did all my life until I got to this point, but I hope you never have to find out what its like 1st hand, I guarantee you that you would not like it the least bit, but it will humble a person. I planned t work until my death, but that can change at a moments notice.

And what is the precise spiritual, ethical or moral difference between

.........someone working their entire life and by their "own sweat of their own labors" and by careful discipline put aside and/or invest money in order to live during the time of their life that they can no longer work (we'll call it retirement as most these days have to work until 72 to get their SS benefit) due to being too old and "disabled" to continue working

and

........"Each person pays money in [more likely the government taking out of your check] that has been earned from the sweat of their own labors" ?

There are so many times that I wish I would have held onto my investments. :smile We do have other assets (just not in 401K plans, IRA's, Mutual Funds, and no more Annuity... LOL.) but...I am happy for those that have money tucked away. It is wise, IMO. "Different strokes for different folks"...you know? :Green

It's interesting how you can reason your way through thinking it's okay for you to do something but not for others to do the same thing. It's okay to put money into SS for later if you need it, but it's not okay to put money into investments for later if you need them.
Can you depend on a retirement funds, $100,000 of stock, or $150,000 of bonds, tear down you barn and build bigger barns to store all of it in and really trust God 100% to supply your daily bread?
You are okay with the idea that you get money from the gov't every month because you paid into that investment, but everybody else should live by blind faith. Unless you can somehow explain the difference to me, that is what I would call being a HYPOCRITE!
I've never been permanently disabled, but I have been physically unable to work for a long period of time due to an injury, and I never needed the gov'ts help to get through that period. I was wise enough to have invested in disability insurance years before I was injured, and I still pay the premiums on that policy today, because if I am ever disabled again, it is still my responsibility to provide for my family.

can't everyone just agree that there are things that are neither right or wrong? That we each have our lives and families and must make the choices made on our on convictions? While there are many absolutes, not everything falls into that catergory. To each his own....live and let live. THere are enough things out there we need to be concerned about that ARE absolutes to keep us busy for awhile trying to figure out and life by them.

ok, just my :2cents

I agree with that...to me, with finances, as long as your testimony is good with the world, it is your business how you run them. (And of course if your motives are right before God...but then your motives are not my business).

Sometimes I fear that people who don't have alot of money look around in jealousy and decide that those who have more than them are somehow not right with God.

Let's just get back to the discussion, maybe? We just recently had a "cat fight"... Do we need a "dog fight" too? :tum What you do with your money is really your business...as the ladies posted. :smile

You're right. Besides, people who don't have a lot of money can still live normal lives. I know how to find cute clothes at the thrift store, and how to make a pretty nice meal on a tight budget. Like I was saying to my husband tonight, we're "poor people with class". :Bleh We don't have much money coming in right now, but we're not acting all poor and needy about it. As long as the Lord provides enough for us to have a roof over our head, clothes to wear, and food to put on the table... we're doing great!

I'm not even counting on living long enough to be retired or draw SS and even if I do, I'm not counting on SS to still be there and if it happens to be, I'm certainly not counting on it being enough to live on.

At the same time, I know I won't have enough saved back to retire on either.

If I live that long I'll have to do then what I do now, simply trust God to provide my needs as His Word says He will (and always does and has).

You've heard the account of the believing man in the flood praying to God and waiting on the roof top for rescue, right?

Nope, don't think I've heard of that one.
