Do you do that? We do. It saves us a lot of money by avoiding the fancy packaging. In most of our IGA (Independent Grocers Association) stores there are usually entire sections of every kind of dry food imaginable packed in non-frilly plastic bags. At one particular store (Dutchmaid Market, in Shaefferstown, PA ) I saw a 25# (canvas) bag of rice on the shelf. That store and many others cater to the local Amish and Mennonites, who really know how to "squeeze a penny till Lincoln squeals".

Can anyone tell me what this type of vinegar is ? red wine vinaigrette I ask because I saw it listed as a topping for a salad .I assume this must be a type of dressing . Also if any of you were to see this listed with a house salad in a restraunt ,and you saw that they gave no alternative ,(ie ...they don't offer a ranch ,or a bleu cheese)and it was suppose to come with a entree .What would you do ?

Any of you have ever eaten weird foods? Share it, it'll be pretty appealing! I for one at times eat raw onions. They're good for your health, even though they stink. Of course, I make sure I only eat that when I am not going outdoors. Then, especially if you come to Singapore, never forget the durian. It's a tropical fruit with pods inside that has some sweet creamy (and some say smelly) stuff inside. Try it. You'll love it!

Apple cider?
by Anon- 10 replies

Went to an orchard/farm today and picked apples with the kids (not sure what I'm going to do with all of them, LOL, don't want fattening stuff around the house) and got a little single serve thing of their fresh apple cider. It was REALLY good (I'm not a big apple juice/cider fan) and tasted like you were biting into an apple rather than just drinking apple juice. Anyhoo I was reading on how to make cider (which I don't plan on attempting) but can someone tell me why its ok for kids to drink apple cider if its actually slightly fermented? (I know the difference between sweet cider and hard cider but even the sweet kind has to ferment slightly). So it was fun, but…

Here is a tasty pizza crust that is easy to make. It takes about an hour from start to finish, but it is worth it. Heat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon white sugar 1 Tablespoon active dry yeast 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon dried basil 1 pinch ground black pepper 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil 1 cup water 2 Tablespoons olive oil In a large bowl, stir together first 9 ingredients. Mix in the vegetable oil and water. When the dough has pulled together, turn in out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead until smooth and elastic. Ligh…

Made this tonight alongside some ham for dinner...there's plenty for Sunday afternoon leftovers! Cheesy potato casserole: 2 lbs frozen (thawed) hash brown potatoes (I prefer the diced cubes) 8 oz (or more, I like more) shredded cheddar cheese 2 cans cream of chicken soup (undiluted) 1 c. chopped onion 1 pt. sour cream 2 c. crushed Ritz crackers 1 1/2 sticks butter Combine first 5 ingredients and spread in greased 9x13 pan. Top with crushed crackers and then cut butter in small cubes and sprinkle on top. (Yeah its alot! It fries the top really yummy). Bake uncovered at 350 for an hour to an hour/15 min. Makes enough to serve an army of side dish…

Hi, everyone - new here and cannot wait to try out some recipes! Here is one a wonderful friend shared with me: 1 c freshly-shredded parmesan 1 c mozzarella 1 c mayo 1 garlic clove Mix all of the above together. Get a sourdough round bread bowl and cut out the middle (to be eaten later). Put cheese mixture into bread bowl and bake at 350 for about 30 minutes - SOOOO delicious!!!! Serve the cut-out bread with the cheese dip on top and you will have a guaranteed hit! Have a blessed day! Tina

Yesterday at Shady Maple I was "window shopping" at the Amish shop downstairs and I was with a lady from our church and she pointed at the chocolates and said "Mmmm, they have Wilbur Buds!" I was like "Hey, you buy those?" and she said "Yeah they are really good!" So I drooled a bit but hubby had the wallet and I didn't feel like going all the way back upstairs through the crowds to get money so I didn't get any. Well today the lady brought me a little baggie of milk and dark Wilbur Buds! They really are good! The milk chocolate ones (my favorite) remind me of Dove chocolate (the higher quality kind you can get at regular grocery stores, really creamy stuff). I th…

Ohhh I'm so bad...but saw on SlickDeals.net that Amazon.com is having a two day fall kitchen sale. They had a 450 watt refurb KitchenAid mixer (6 mos warranty, like new condition in manuf. box) for $149, with a $25 coupon code and free shipping...I have been looking at buying a spare bowl for my current KitchenAid but they are like $60....so I figured $124 for a whole second mixer was awesome...you'll have to check it out today if you are in need of one!

We have wild blueberries growing on our property. Last year we didn't get very many because of the lack of rain but this year they are plentiful. Besides eating them raw, what are some of your favorite ways to use blueberries? Last year I got enough to make muffins, pancakes and blueberry oat bars but that was about it. Any ideas you would like to share? Thx.

I tried this last night, and it's really good! What you do is: 1. Spread a flour tortilla with the spread of your choice - mayo, dressing, etc., if you want to. 2. Place lunchmeat of your choice and cheese on tortilla and wrap it up. 3. Cook in skillet with just a little bit of oil or shortening. Cook slowly so it heats through and cheese melts, turning once, until tortilla is browned and crispy. Tasty! :D

I guess most churches have potlucks from time to time. Do you always take the same thing or do you try to take something different every time?

What all do you put on your tacos? We like the meat (of course : ), cheddar cheese, monterey jack cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream. We also like the crunchy shell and flour tortillas equally well. I'm not much on a lot of taco sauce so I usually skip that.

Have you guys tried those "Sweet and Salty Nut" granola bars? YUM they are SOOOOO good! I love the peanut ones but I just found some new flavors on a great sale yesterday, Cashew and Mixed Nut ones and they are good too! They are normally pretty expensive but yesterday they had this thing where if you buy 10 General Mills cereal/granola bar/fruit snacks you got them 10/$15 so that was awesome. I think they are the best granola bars I've ever had... I try to take a few to work with me for quick energy but they don't last long at home!
