Good Post!

Just to stir the pot...why, if all lying is wrong, did God bless Rahab - to the point that she was included in the lineage of Christ? She flat out lied to the men seeking the spies. And Jael was celebrated for killing Sisera, after telling him she would warn him if someone came...fully intending to kill him....? :icon_mrgreen:

Well most preachers would tell you that God didn't blessing her lying, God blessed her faithfulness in wanting to protect the two spies. While that may be true, you still can't get around she outright lied.............

3 quotes on lying.

The person who feels it is all right to tell a white lies soon goes color blind.

No man has a good enough memory to be a successful liar.

Sometime we lie by not speaking up.

And, is there ever a good excuse for lying?

No, there is never a good excuse to lie.

It's true that God didn't bless Rahab for lying. God blessed Rahab for coming to the realization that God was God. Rahab turned from heathenism to God and she was blessed because of this; not at all for the sin of lying.

But Rahab was never rebuked for the lie. And Jael was glorified for killing Sisera, after deceiving him into believing he was safe.

Makes one wonder if wartime is acceptable for subterfuge in God's eyes...

Don't shoot me! I don't believe it's right to lie. But there's a reason these women weren't rebuked! I have heard that God blessed Rahab's faithfulness, in spite of the lie. And I believe that. But it still makes me wonder....

One of my all time favorites is:
"Excuses are the skin of a reason stuffed with a lie."

We don't see in Scripture where God rebuked Jacob for all his sins but we can know God never approved of them or blessed them.

No, Scripture gives no indication that wartime is an approved time for lying.

I know that Scripture doesn't give that indication...but it doesn't say it's wrong, either (during war time :bleh:). No-one in Scripture is rebuked for all of their sins. But many suffered the consequences and we are told of those - including Jacob. But no such thing with Rahab or Jael. Rather, they are blessed...

We don't see an outright rebuke of Jacob for each sin.

Scripture is also clear what folks are blessed for and it's never for having committed a sin.

Another factor to remember too is that God doesn't smack us each time we sin...thanks be to God for that!

So if a Bible character committed a sin and if God did not openly say it was wrong, or did not rebuke it, them that means it was not accounted as a sin?

Now, if that were so, them God would be a respected of person, letting some people sin, but holding other accountable for the same sins, plus God would be OK'ing a person to sin if that were so, which that in itself would be a sin, we know one thing absolutely, there is no sin in our God.

I had a person tell me once that with the sins, getting him drunk and having children by him, that Lots daughters did no sin being as God did not rebuke them. It amazes me at the number of people who says when Bible characters sinned, if God did not rebuke them, them it was no sin, even though God clearly says in another pat of the Bible that doing that is a sin against Him.

Jerry - I never said it wasn't sin. Never. Nor did I say it wasn't accounted to them as sin. In fact, I said I believe it is wrong to lie. What I said was that it was never mentioned, and they were blessed: Rahab became a part of the lineage of Christ, and Jael was glorified in song.

Actually, I don't know anyone who says if God doesn't rebuke someone it's a sin. I think everyone knows that God rebukes when He's good and ready, not when we think He should.

I should have left the 1st part I had 1st put in that post, but I hoped we are past that, I was not really saying you were saying it was no sin, but some do, because they were not rebuked by God at that time. And of course I was replying to this.

"But Rahab was never rebuked for the lie. And Jael was glorified for killing Sisera, after deceiving him into believing he was safe.

There be some who say we can lie at times and its no sin and use Rahab as an example.

Oh, okay. I have known kids who have gotten confused because there was no open condemnation of her lie - by the spies, by Joshua, by God. We may know that God blessed in spite of her lie, but kids can't always see that, even if they are taught that.
