I don't know, My dad claimed he is a mormon, but he is not an active mormon. most mormon beliefs have alot of common with IFB beliefs except the book of mormon, the trinity, and even polygramy marriages. I think they are very racist against black (but not indians)

Is he an active mormon? I know some say they are mormon but they really mean that they were raised in a mormon home and accepted the mormon beliefs.

Forgive me, but I am afraid I don't understand your question?

Are you asking if we are going to vote for or against someone based on their religion?

Or do you know things about Mitt Romney that would make him a good president in spite of his religious views?

I will have to research this further before I can post again in this regard.

Would his Mormonism hinder you from voting for him?

That is assuming all of his political positions were acceptable to you. Make it a generic Mr X who happens to be a Mormon if that helps.

So are you asking if we vote according to a person's religious beliefs?

I am not asking if you or anyone else is a bigot, if that is what you are concerned about. I use Mitt Romney as an example because he is a Mormon and something we have not seen on the national scene. I am curious if this is a non issue or if some would stay away from the polls because of his background.

In Maryland a very conservative black man drew fewer votes than a slightly less conservative Governor in the last election. The counties he was supposed to do real well in showed a drop off in support for him compared to similar white candidates. Apparently, people who agreed with him did not vote for him.

Does Romney face a similar challenge?

I would vote for an IFB Black man for office, if that is what you are asking?

I do not know if I would vote for someone who is a Mormon because he may support things that I do not believe in such as "gay marriages" which is contrary to the Biblical institution of marriage between one man and one woman - he may then extend this to his personal polygamy beliefs.

I do not vote for women, period. I never have and I never will. I do not vote for anyone who supports abortion. I do not vote for men who are openly homosexual or who support homosexual life styles.

I am a registered Democrat, but I have voted Republican before when the options seemed to be appropriate.

Now if you can direct me to a website that tells me what this Romney guy is all about, I will read it and then base my response accordingly.

Mitt is a very very distant relative of my wife. She hates him because he supports right wing stuff like 10 Commandments in courts and schools, he is pro gun, anti abortion anti Sodomy etc but is a Mormon.

Yes I would support him being he has only one strike against him.

Also I pray every day my wife will change her political stand and start wanting to serve God, and side with him.

Make it a Mr. X so the only issue is the Mormonism. I have to admit I am uncomfortable with the idea of an LDS as president. I picture misionaries bicycling away from the white house to spead the Mormon religion. I would hope that I would not let the whole LDS thing keep me from voting for him, but I do have to admit that I think "Is that all we have to choose from?"

I would vote for him, yes. If I felt he was the best man for the job then I would vote regardless of his religion. And I think Steele would've been awesome Mike. :(

Janet, you are a registered Democrat? :o
Are you sure you're Baptist?

In terms of voting, it'd be best to get a Christian, but a Mormon isn't so bad, they would hold unto all the important points us Christians would hold unto, such as anti-abortion etc

I'd have no problems voting for Romney if his views politically matched mine. Even if he is a 'Mormon'.

Not that I believe anyone of any religion can get far in politics without seriously compromising anyway....

I am tired of being catered to in the last several months before an election, and then forgotten about until the next cycle when the candidate remembers his 'faith'

I reached voting age right after President Nixon resigned his office and I have been a democrat ever since - although it seems that the dems have moved far away from what they used to represent. I have not seen enough effort from the Republicans to actually make me completely switch over to their side either. So I usually end up voting a split ticket - I vote my conscience and not my political party.
