Well, I had to replace a video operator today, so I got to go to the conference after all (and I didn't have to pay since I was doing something there). Well, some of the things he says are true and Biblical, but yeah, his teaching is mostly based on Calvinism.

Two churches I attended referenced John Piper alot in their teaching. And I have to say that his doctrine was sound from what I heard him preach. As far as being hedonistic, that I will look into further.

There are so many labels out there, does anyone still consider themselves to be a "Biblicist"? I am neither a calvinist nor arminian nor protestant. I follow Christ. I have seen so many Baptist believers get caught up in labels that they are literally devouring each other.

We have a responsibilty to show our erring brother their sin so that they may be restored. Has anyone ever contacted John Piper on this issue?

I am sure others have contacted him. He didn't sin against those on this message board personally - nor are we a part of his church - so we are not required to contact him personally about his writings. His writings are public, therefore these warnings against him are public.

The Hedonistic bit comes from his own book title.

I think the book is called "Christian Hedonism" but it is something like that.

I personally don't recommend it, but I was given it - as I mentioned I got about three or four chapters into it, but have better things to spend my already limited time on.

I am afraid that the only "Piper" I know about is the one who picked the peck of pickled peppers, but I am afraid that I do not know where the peck of pickled peppers that Peter Piper picked is at the moment. However I do find this thread rather interesting. :wink

There was one woman on the board that said that he was visiting her church for a conference. Wouldn't that affect her personally?

You aren't meaning me, are you? I'm not exactly a woman, hehe. (Whatever happened to the gender indicators for posters?)

What little I've heard him preach has been right on the money.

My only exposure is through WayoftheMasterRadio.com. They play him quite a bit there and everything I've heard so far has been pretty accurate, doctrinally.

W-E,

Don't forget that a false teacher does not have to say wrong things all the time, or even 10% of the time to portray deadly doctrine. Rat poison is 99.9% good food.

This John Piper fellow claims to want to do everything to make himself happy. :Hmmm:, right away now we see he is straying from the truth:::: We are to do all to the Glory of God. Jesus walked the earth and never charged for a miracle. He is very God. My conviction is that if John Piper were really and truly serving the LORD he would depend on the LORD's leading and for finances, as in love gifts.

What Is Christian Hedonism?
My shortest summary of Christian Hedonism is: God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.

We all make a god out of what we take the most pleasure in. Christian Hedonists want to make God their God by seeking after the greatest pleasure?pleasure in him.

By Christian Hedonism, we do not mean that our happiness is the highest good. We mean that pursuing the highest good will always result in our greatest happiness in the end. We should pursue this happiness, and pursue it with all our might. The desire to be happy is a proper motive for every good deed, and if you abandon the pursuit of your own joy you cannot love man or please God.

True, but I can only judge him based on what I've heard, not on heresay or rumor or gossip.

So far, everything I've heard is good.

If you'd like to show me something that he's taught that you disagree with, then I'll be more than happy to listen to your concerns.

As for "Christian Hedonism", I'm just not familiar with it outside of a few quotes here and there and I don't think it would be fair of me to judge him based on so little information.

This John Piper fellow claims to want to do everything to make himself happy.

Do you have a source for this?

W-E,

Please read the whole thread. i.e. all the posts.

I did. All that shows is that people reject to his use of the phrase "Christian hedonism" but don't seem to know (or care) what he means by that phrase.

Like I said, if you have a source where Piper says something objectionable, then by all means, show it to me and I'll be glad to hear your concerns.

Until then, all I know about the man seems to be Biblically sound and I can only judge him based on what I know, not condemn him based on what I don't know or the rumors you guys are spreading about him.

To learn more about Piper, go to the source. Take a trip to his web site. He has an article explaining Christian Hedonism.

Here a small snip from one of his articles:

The desire to be happy is a proper motive for every good deed, and if you abandon the pursuit of your own joy you cannot love man or please God

The key word being "a small snip".

I went to his website and read the article. As I read, I discovered that he believes happiness is a by-product of serving God. I don't see anything unbiblical or untrue about that.

Would I have said it that way? No. But on the other hand, did you read the rest of the article to see if he explained what he meant by that?

I'm not necessarily for the man or against him. I simply do not have a horse in this race. But, I've got to be honest and say that I can't help but feel like you guys are trying to push me to condemn him.

I'm sorry, but I'm just not seeing anything Unbiblical there. Unclear, perhaps. A little too politically correct, perhaps, but nothing Unbiblical.
