I was just thinking about dieting...

haha...

And so I ended up thinking about how all animals and humans were vegetarians until after the flood, when God allowed animals to fear man, and also allowed animals to be hunted as food.

I'm sure a big part of the reason is because most of the plant life was destroyed during the flood and they had to have something to eat. And God put the fear into the animals to help preserve them on the earth when man began to hunt.

My thought though was, I wonder if, due to the loss of the protective canopy, if man's nutritional needs changed....OR if maybe before the flood there were some species of special fruits full of protein and iron and etc that did not survive the flood. I mean, dinosaurs soon went extinct, its possible certain fruits and grains did too?

I dunno, just thinking. Today we add all sorts of vitamins and minerals and everything to stay healthy, I was figuring that in the beginning, either man's nutritional needs were different or God had sort of a "balanced diet" provided for them in a way we don't have today.

Does the Bible say that man didn't eat animals til after the flood? I always assumed, I guess, that once they left the Garden, they began eating meat.

I know there are still veggies that can supply protein (legumes, beans [not true veggies, but they are vegetarian]) and iron (broccoli and other green veggies), so I would imagine there could have been others that were even higher in protein and iron content. And since the removal of the protective canopy allowed man to die younger, it would make sense to me that man's nutritional needs changed.

I'm sure we all know people who are only vegetarians. I remember reading something a good long time ago that talked about how those people who want to go into meditative trances, or dabble in the occult, etc., usually eat no meat. The author was suggesting that the lack of eating meat actually weakens our bodies and opens us up to spiritual attack. Then he used the facts from the OT that every time the Children of Israel were to go to war, they had to eat meat. Just before they left Egypt, they ate meat. Of course, God provided Manna for them in the desert, which wasn't meat - but it was perfectly designed to meet their nutritional needs, since it came directly from God!!

Interesting thought, Suzy.

I think a lot of the reasons we have to add vitamins and minerals to everything is that food is so over processed, all or nearly all of the nutrition is stripped out of it. And meat has so many additives it's not funny. If someone were to eat beef from an organically grown cow (no growth hormones, etc), they would be amazed at the difference in the taste - and in the way they felt after they ate it!

Interesting concept. I just came back from Panama not too long ago and there, because of the tropical environment, the fruits and vegetables grow much larger and are typically much more juicy and/or flavorful than here in the states. I would think that the pre-flood climate could have the same and perhaps even more enhanced effect on vegetation. Plus, we do not know if any plant forms may have become extinct because of the flood. We may not have lost just animal species as a result of it.

Good point. My brother-in-law grows all natural beefers and when you fry up 1 pound of ground from these you can drain the fat into a tablespoon and the taste is out of this world!

Now I'm hungry :hungry:

Yes...in the beginning God gave man every plant and herb for bread.

If you read the chapters following the flood you will see that God gives Noah animals and fowl to eat...also says that the "fear and dread" of man will be on the animals from that point forward. Until the flood, I believe animals and humans remained "friends" in a way, because there were no predators/prey. Which also helps explain how it was easy for Noah to get them all on the ark. They were not afraid of man until after the flood.

Do you know who the author is ?

Can someone show me this in the Bible?

The only verses that come to mind concerning the dietary health of someone are found in Daniel where Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were given a vegetarian diet and ended up better off than those on flesh eating diets.

10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
11 Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king?s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
14 So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king?s meat. Daniel 1:10-15

I'd like to know exactly what pulse was made up of because all I hear today is that a strictly vegetarian diet is not necessarily too healthy.

There is a book out "The Eden Diet"

I never read it but it goes deep into biblically what and why different things are eaten, and the best way to max out your diet with minimal meats.

I know they are big on seeds...

I don't believe the Bible has any other diet but moderation....such as the verse that tells us not to eat too much honey, lest we vomit. And the verses on gluttony (binge eating and then vomiting)...the only reason the four guys in Daniel only ate pulse is because they did not want to eat meat offered to idols.

This is God's answer in these N.T. times for those who would command you to not eat meat:

I Tim. 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

They abstained because they knew the meat wouldn't be prepared the way the Jews under the Mosaic Law were commanded to prepare food. There could also have been meat from an unclean animal, like pig = baked ham, YUM!

I agree. Acts 10 pretty much gives us license to eat all things. I was just making a response to heartstrings with regards to the following:

The author was suggesting that the lack of eating meat actually weakens our bodies and opens us up to spiritual attack.

I can't think of any food item being disallowed in the NT unless it may prove to be a stumbling block to someone.
