I personally us the Scofield and am pleased with it for the most part' date=' but, as it seems with most of what's out there, you will find errors. I've been to get the study bible put out by the Sword of the Lord and check it out as a good pasor friend of mine likes his. Any input on that particular study Bible??[/quote']

If you're referring to the John R. Rice Study Bible, IMO it is ok. While John Rice was a great soul winner prayer and teacher, he did tend to "correct" the King James and this comes through in his references.

You all can throw manna at me when we get to heaven, but for me personally, until I've studied it myself to make sure it's solid, I hold in question ANY man's position or teaching (post 1650) on any subject if that man wasn't KJV only. I just feel like that if the man couldn't get his Bible straight.....likelyhood is he had some other engine problems as well... but then, what do I know....

Recently I was challenged by another christian to check into the publisher of my bible, (Zondervan) and to see wether it was a worthwhile bible to have. I find the whole thing very difficult. In todays climate it is very hard to find down the line bible believing anything, added to this living outside of the States everything is three times more expensive with shipping added. At present I am using the Defined Bible. It has no cross referencing but has all the so called archaic words defined. I find it good as it's making me do the research rather than relying on someone else's interpretation. Having said this, on certain topics, particularly end times it is extremely difficult and I'm quite lost with it all. I have about 10 different bibles on my shelf and shuffle between them. I'm not happy with this system as I have notes everywhere now.

Sorry not much help towards the original question, but maybe someone could shed some light on what they think about looking into the publishers as well as the authors etc.

I personally use a lewis bible and I like it a great deal. It has no notes though and is not a "study" bible per se. I have tried quite a few study bibles and usually I find what I consider to be heretical notes attempting to undermine the word of God and that ends up bothering me. To date I haven't found one I really liked.

I do have a Defined Bible and it is pretty good over all, it did have a few definitions I didn't think were helpful(the definition of satyr, etc.), but nothing heretical. My biggest issue with that bible is that the quality seems to be a little lacking. The leather feels sort of cheap and the binding curled up and the glue started to come loose when I left it in the hot car one day. :eek I was able to fix it but I don't think it would handle as much hard use as I would like. I do think it would be an excellent first bible for someone who is not familiar with the language of the KJV however.

Right now I have a Rock of ages study bible on order and should get it before too long, I have heard a number of people give it high marks and I know their ministry is solid, but I haven't had a chance to go through one of their bibles in much depth yet. That will shortly change. :wink

I've heard the ROA Bible is pretty sharp.....don't know about binding and construction yet, but hey, thats a good excuse for a new Bible every few years!!!

Best one I've found as far as leather quality is the Goatskin Leather Cambridge......feels really nice. God a strong Binding too...
