The forum Bible study on 2 & 3 John has now officially begun.

To begin let us consider the following questions:

1.  What are the primary themes of subject matter in 2 John?

2.  In what verses of 2 John do we find each of these primary themes presented?

3.  What are the primary themes of subject matter in 3 John?

4.  In what verses of 3 John do we find each of these primary themes presented?

(Note: I myself DO have thoughts in answer to the above questions; but I shall wait for other contributions before I present them, so that I myself do not simply dominate everything.)

Though I agree with NN, I would say it is specifically this:

II John - "Walking in truth" (II John 1:6)

I make this distinction because he makes it clear that some walk in truth and some do not, some have true doctrine and some do not, then he commands her that she should walk in it.

III John - "Faithful to the Truth" (III John 1:5)

They were faithful in charity and love. They were faithful to walk in truth. Diotrephes, however was only faithful to himself. In contrast, Demitrius was faithful to the truth and had good report of all men.

Good contributions all.  My own contribution to the first set of study questions would be as follows:

Primary Themes in 2 John

1.  Walking in the truth -- 2 John 1:1-4, 6

2.  Walking in godly love -- 2 John 1:1-3, 5-6

3.  Separating from falsehood -- 2 John 1:7-11

Primary Themes in 3 John

1.  Walking in the truth -- 3 John 1:1-4, 12

2.  Charity toward traveling ministers -- 3 John 1:5-8, 12

3.  The evil of loving to have the preeminence -- 3 John 1:9-11

If there are any others that wish to contribute an answer to the first set of study questions, please feel free to do so.

Yet let us begin to consider another set of study questions, as follows:

1.  With the primary themes in mind, what would you give as a general (broad) outline for the epistle of 2 John?

2.  With the primary themes in mind, what would you give as a general (broad) outline for the epistle of 3 John?

(Note: Just verse divisions are sufficient; however, if you also have division titles, they would be worth presenting.)

Just wanted to let you know I did read (as I committed to), and I have done an outline/conclusion for both books. I decided not to post, but to participate this way instead, and observe. Just wanted to let you know... I'm not ignoring the study, and I think many others are reading/observing as well. God bless you in your desire to serve others.

II John

I.                    Walking in Truth – II John 1:1-4, 6

V. 3 – The blessing of truth (grace, mercy, peace).

V. 4 – The evidence of truth (walking in truth).

V. 4 – The command of truth (from Christ).

V. 6 – The motive behind truth (love).

V. 6 – The unchanging truth (as ye have heard from the beginning).

II.                 Walking in Godly Love – II John 1:1-3, 5-6

V. 1 – The criteria of love (love in truth).

V. 2-3 – The blessing of love (grace, mercy, peace).

V. 5 – Love, the unchanging command (not a new commandment).

V. 5 – Who we are to love (one another).

V. 6 – Love explained (this is love…).

V. 6 – Walk in love (this is the commandment…ye should walk in it).

III.               Separating from Falsehood – II John 1:7-11

V. 7 – The abundance of deceivers.

V. 7 – The identity of deceivers (antichrist).

V. 8 – How we ought to respond (look to yourselves).

V. 8 – What is at stake (those things which we have wrought, a full reward).

V. 9 – The test of falsehood (whosoever transgresseth, abideth not in the doctrine).

V. 9 – The authority of truth (he that abideth…hath both the Father and the Son).

V. 10 – Keeping company with deceivers (Don’t receive him, don’t bid him God speed).
