I always attempt to verify these “stories” before sharing them. I never heard anything about this incident but, my wife received an email about it. So I went looking for further verification. I found the information below. However, I wasn’t satisfied and began a search of local newspapers and law enforcement; which resulted in nothing to corroborate the story below. One puzzle piece bothers me; why is it on the NBC web site? Has anyone else seen this email with a long list of forwards?

Two illegal aliens, Ralphel Resindez, 23, and Enrico Garza, 26, probably believed they would easily overpower home-alone 11-year-old Patricia Harrington after her father had left their Two-story home. It seems the two crooks never learned two things: they were in Montana and Patricia had been a clay-shooting champion since she was nine.

Patricia was in her upstairs room when the two men broke through the front door of the house. She quickly ran to her father’s room and grabbed his 12-gauge Mossberg 500 shotgun.

Resindez was the first to get up to the second floor only to be the first to catch a near point blank blast of buckshot from the 11-year-old’s knee-crouch aim. He suffered fatal wounds to his abdomen and genitals.

When Garza ran to the foot of the stairs, he took a blast to the left shoulder and staggered out into the street where he bled to death before medical help could arrive.

It was found out later that Resindez was armed with a stolen 45-caliber handgun he took from another home invasion robbery. That victim, 50-year-old David 0′Burien, was not so lucky. He died from stab wounds to the chest.

Ever wonder why good stuff never makes NBC, CBS, PBS, MSNBC, CNN, or ABC news……..?

The story is false. The NBC site is a type of discussion forum for the TV show, "Heroes." Viewers can post stories of their own "heroes." If you look through other postings, you'll find similar stories of questionable authenticity. NBC probably doesn't want to spend the money to make sure all the postings are legitimate.

I think it is in most, if not all, parts of America too. The places I'm familiar with, a child has to be 12, 13, or 14 before it's legal to leave them home alone.

Regardless of the law, age means little, the maturity and capability of the child is what's most important.

I was mowing lawns @ age 10. babysitting @ age 12 --- most people today would find that unthinkable.

Today most people think "kids" should stay like little kids into their 20s or beyond.

I began mowing when I was 9 (about 3-4 months away from being 10), and that was with the push mower before anyone decided to mandate a dozen safety features for them.

My Dad dropped out of school at 14 and started working full time for a farmer...and he worked every year from then until he retired at 62 to care for my Mom who was going into the final stages of her long fight with cancer.

Raised properly, children mature much faster and become responsible much sooner than most today want to believe.

Our oldest son has been like that while our youngest son has been responsible and trustworthy to a task from a very young age.
