  1. 1. Do you ever give a Reputation point to a post you like?

When we first switched over to the IPB software I had the negative Rep enabled and it was used properly. The only time that I saw it used then was to point out some rotten attitudes and false doctrine. I removed it because I did not want it to become a prOBlem in the future for people given negative reps for silly stuff.

I think the way it is now is a good system.

@DennisDurty the next upgrade in the boards will show the you who gave you a Rep point. Only the author of the post can see who gave them a Rep. That upgrade is taking place in about 2 weeks.

I wonder if it would be best to keep it anonymous (since there is no bad rep anymore I don't see the huge deal) that way you won't feel OBligated to give those that give you good rep...good rep. Does that make sense? I think Annie stated something like that above and I tend to agree.

I never think of it.

Of course now that I looked at my rep, I see my user rating, whatever that is, is like 4 out of 5 stars...does that mean 1/5 of the posters don't like me? hahaha

I never paid any attention to any of that before....

4 out of 5 stars? Where are you looking at?

Kitagrl's profile...look to right..."User rating" has four stars highlighted in yellow....then for reputation it says "11...good" don't know if they are related. I have no clue about it LOL never paid attention!

The boards were just updated and I left the reputations anonymous.

Thank you everyone for your input.

Just a thought from one who has participated in forums where the rep system has been used and abused...

It seems that people tend to post positive rep only on posts they agree with, which, to me, is redundant, since expressing agreement is something which can be done in the discussion itself. People tend to post positive or negative rep emotionally, often piling on, to bolster someone's argument, instead of giving merit to posts which are well thought out, graciously expressed, etc. So, predictably, the people with the highest rep are people who toe the party line on all the issues, not people who provoke thought, communicate graciously, etc. (And, people tend to return favors..."He repped me, so I'll find a chance to rep him," which flaws the results.) I'm not thrilled about the concept of "reputation," anyway, since humans are so prone to giving and accepting flattery, and thinking more highly of themselves than they ought to.

Just a dissenting opinion. I'd be interested to hear from others who believe that the rep system accomplishes something valuable. I'm prOBably missing something.

I agree. The rep system just creates cliques and good ol' boy clubs. People will tend to ignore reading the posts of those with few or no reps points, except for me because I always pull for the underdogs. :wink Edited by Wilchbla

Are people really going to go to everyones profile page to check their rep points before deciding whether or not to read a post? (That is the only way to know, isn't it?)

At this moment I don't know who has or doesn't have rep points or even whether I have or have not rep points.

If the rep points are anonymous I don't see how a good 'ol boys club or clique could be established.

So far I've looked at 2 of our members rep's. One was out of curiosity to see what it looked like, the other I was just curious if they had any. I have not even looked at my own.

I've looked at a couple today to see what it's all about but I'm not going to look at every posters rep rating to decide if I should read their posts or not! :icon_mrgreen:

I don't really see how this can be abused.

Yes, it's human nature to do this. Especially for those who don't post regularly on the forum. All I know from experience on other boards that rep points leads to cliques which leads to hard feelings. Personally, I don't care one way or the other but it does seem childish to give out stars like we're in grade school. BroMatt mention how you give out ratings on e-Bay and such. This proves the point. If you see someone with less of a rating you avoid dealing with them or assume they're below the grade.

Let me ask a honest question. We have been using the rep system just under a year, what cliques has the reputation caused here?

I would think that posting would cause more cliques than a private rep system where you can't even leave comments.
