If I could read as fast as he could do you really think I would say that I'm a slow reader and its hard to believe that anyone can read that fast? Did you read my previous post which has the answers to the questions you asked?

eh? I didn't ask any questions.

I agree with jerrynumbers, especially when it comes to reading God's Word. Slow readers are OBviously more able to digest what they read. I tried speed reading, and they tend to skip the small words and certain pronouns, etc. and get the "gist" of the message, but with the Word of God it is important that we consume every word. I am a slow reader, and to be honest, I don't like to read unless it is the Bible or some book that helps me in that area. I would make a terrible lawyer because of that, and I hate history (too much reading!), although I have learned much through the years about it. Baptist history? That's another story. i did read Foxes Book of Martyrs, but it was depressing although history may soon repeat itself! Anyway, I have read many biographies of famous missionaries and preachers, and much of Spurgeon's writings, (Have a huge bookcase full of books by Oliver B green, Spurgeon, Billy Sunday (bio) etc.)and have read nearly all of them.

I did not intend to suggest that reading is studying. They are two totally different things. I read my Bible thru a couple times of year but that is not study. You are right. Study is word for word. Speed reading is reading.. not studying. What I'm saying is that if you put a speed reader against a regular reader and simply read thru the bible, in general, the speed reader will retain more of the subject that is read.

Irishman, amen.gif!

I'm with you. In the past I've read many commentaries, many articles, books, that I thought would help me understand the Bible. Before I make my next statement I must say this, I'm only a student of the Bible, I am no scholar, never ever claim to be, I know I never will be. Now days I don't read very many books, just one every now and again, and the only books I read have to do with the Bible. I read the Bible quite a bit.

After the number of years that I've attended church, the home study I've done, a private class with a pastor for 2 years one on one, getting thorough half of Faith Bible Intuitions course, so at 63 I formed in my mind what I believe the Bible teaches. On things I am completely convinced about, I stand firm and strong. I dislike being wishy-washy, want take a stand on nothing, I know of many pastors that are like that, fearing they will offend someone. The Word of God, if you stand for its truths, some, perhaps even many, will be offended, just as they were with Jesus, who came to His own, only a very few accepted Him. The rest sought to murder Him.

I firmly believe many people polluted their mind from reading stuff that ought not enter a Christians mind. Yes, I've let many things enter my mind, that I wish I had kept out. I wish someone at one time had warned me, but they did not. I wish that in the past I had pastors and Sunday school teachers that warned about reading certain books, watching TV shows, of going to the movies, and so on. I did have one for a short time that warned about watching TV somewhat, but really his warning was very lighthearted.

Now someone asked something about me saying close captioned was fake, NO, I did not say that, nor do I believe I even insinuated close captioned was fake, I spoke of speed reading being fake only. I find it hard to believe that anyone can understand what they read, reading as fast as they claim. No I'm not saying they're lying, its just hard for my mind to comprehend.

Gregg, I don't believe you implied it was, least I did not take it that way.

Thanks Jerry##, I'm not sure why I quoted Irishman... I was just further explaining my comment. I find that I oftentimes hit the "quote" button instead of the "reply" button. I catch it most the time.

Hey durty, I like your signature pic--are you a vet? I would like to see a Christian blog or website for vets (IFB); we could share a lot of good testimonies and perhaps encourage one another further in the Lord. I have a special place in my heart for our veterans.

That would be interesting indeed. Technically, yes I am a vet because I've been to combat but I am not retired. 13 years active duty and I am a Gunnery Sergeant. It saddens me to know how many young GI's you have fighting and dying without the Lord...I went on two deployments to Iraq before I got saved.

Well, Praise the Lord! Thank you for serving so faithfully.
yes, it is shame too that many G.I.'s come home and suffer from Post Traumatic Syndrome, and have all that complication, and still die without Christ. I pray for our men overseas quite often (I'm afraid it's not every day) and that the Lord would intervene in the lives of those who oppose him (Muslims) and defy His great power, and give his glory unto a false god.

I once borrowed a book on speedreading from the library.

One thing it said was that the slower you read, the less you are likely to take in. That certainly seems to work in my case as I hve often read a page and realize I have not taken any of it in so have to read it again.

The book said you start by reading one line at a time by just looking at the centre of the line. When you can do that, you look at the centre of the page then you can read the whole page in one glance.

It didn't work in my case.

That's what I do sometimes, I just look at the whole sentence (not the whole page though, even though I have read news article that way and know exactly what's in the article by one glance -- a really bad habit of mine to do that) instead of reading word by word, especially on closed captioning. There are plenty of words that I can't pronounce or never heard of in real life, so sometimes reading word by word tend to get pointless and boring if I don't always "hear" the words in my brain. I hear the words in my brain since having an implant now. But before that, there were alot of words that I didn't hear, but knew what it means when I see it.

Some people are said to have a photographic memory--they can look at a page and memorize the entire thing in a matter of seconds. Jack VanEmpe is said to have such an ability, although I would not recommend him to anyone! I suppose there are different levels of it too, so prOBably those speed readers have some ability that they do not realize. I do not believe that reading slower causes less perception, on the contrary, it has been a real blessing to me. Too many people leave out important words because they do not read it (the Bible) close enough, and every word is important. I can cite, for example one of the most mis-interpreted verses in the Bible; I have heard some of the greatest preachers of our times mis-quote 2 Corinthians 5:8 read it closely and see if it it says "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" as it is often mis-quoted.

2Co 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

Though I agree with the concept that we are with the Lord when we are absent from the body, I would not use that verse to prove it. Merely giving an example, and not trying to cause a rift, but there are a few others I could cite also.

I once knew a pastor, a very humble man, he has been know to quote more than 100 verses in one sermon. A church member who set under him for many years stated that he thought that through the years that he had heard Brother Barney quote every verse in the Bible as least once.

The last time I saw Brother Barney was on a Sunday morning before he was to go in the hospital the next morning for surgery, Brother Barney said to me, "Brother Jerry, If we don't meet again on this side of heaven, I'll see you on the other side."

His surgery did not go to well. His church was suppose to have revival the following week. In the hospital Brother Barny told that the revival needs to go forth, "its much more important that I am."

He died on July 13, 1998, a Monday, the day the revival was to start, and did start, in his honor.

There were 3 preachers who spoke at his funeral service, there was 10 preachers including my self for the pallbearers. And it may have been one of the highest attended funerals in this area.

Irishman's post made me think of Brother Barney, Jack VanEmpe had nothing on Brother Barney, but Brother Barney had something on him, for he preached and stood for God's truths only, and use him wonderful memory for the pure glory of God. We need many more like Brother Barney, and less like Jack VanEmpe.
