So what do you guys think about the recent reports of the accelerating Toyotas? (The guy in San Diego and now the woman in New York) Do you think they are people being overdramatic or are they true?

How many deaths was cause by Chevy saddle tanks in the 70's and 80's? I had a 86 pickup truck, Chevy never did anything about it.

How many wrecks were caused by Firestone tries blowing out not to many years back.

Of course there is more such incidents of American cars with safety prOBlems that caused deaths.

So far it does not seem as big as these 2, but a big fuss is being made out of it as if there has never been a car or truck produced in America that has a prOBlem that was a safety concern.

Late December Linda and I bought a new Toyota pickup truck, one reason, we did not want to support those companies our tax money bailed out. Oh, we like our 2010 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab 4X4 V6. In fact we like it much better than the last vehicle we bought which was a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Edited to add this.

Remembering what American car makers have done for us that was not very nice. This is just 2 of them, there be several more examples.

How many deaths was cause my GM pickups gas tanks exploding?

A History of Fiery Deaths on the Road

"Since the trucks were introduced in the 1970s, at least 725 people have burned to death in fuel fires triggered by C/K crashes, according to FARS data. The body count distinguishes the pickups, from a fire risk standpoint, as the most dangerous vehicles ever put on the road, according to safety groups, crash victims and their lawyers."

I don't know, but I remember people complained about the person who spill McDonald's coffee as whiny. But if you think boiling hot water is HOT, you bet it will burn the skin off of you. So I felt the person is right to sue McDonald to make sure they lower boiling point temp. when brewing coffee AND lower the temp. of the warming plates that keep the coffee hot after it is brew.

Oh please, they sued saying there should be a "warning" on the cup saying that HOT COFFEE is HOT. What ever happened to commonsense?

You can't remove all the risk and bad things from life. We as a nation have gone way overboard on reacting to these things.

I remember when I was a teenager that the gas linkage on my Nova got stuck due to a broken spring on the carb. and I remember people having that happen with some frequency on various models of cars. I don't recall them taking 100 instances out of 10 trillion driving hours and generating the hysteria that they've got with this Toyota thing...........please, give me a break. Of course, back then we were smart enough to pull the parking brake, put it into neutral and turn off the engine.

Well.. the auto mfr's have managed to put jet aircraft technology in cars so now everything is "fly by wire" and if the computer or sensor go bad the car is going to do crazy things!

I mean, we even have cars that can park themselves now. I don't like it when my car is smarter than I am. I can park my own car, thank you!

We still have 40 people a day killed by drunk drivers by I see no recall on booze.

I'l like to go back to car engines that the "common man" could work on. You know.. 4 nuts off and you have a carb. in hand. Actual hard throttle linkage, etc etc etc...

Ahhhh.. I'm longing for my 55 chevy and 65 chevy impala convertible.

I was reading today and it said the 911 dispatcher was telling the guy to put his car into neutral and turn off the ignition. He wasn't listening to the dispatcher. He had reasons for everything but I can't figure out if he was just stressed, or if he was trying to cause a scene. You never know these days.

Yes, it is hot, but it doesn't need to be that hot for an on-the-go coffee. You have to be aware that this woman was hospitalized for severe burn. I believe she needed new skin result of it. "....third-degree burns of the groin"<----- http://www.vanosteen.com/mcdonalds-coffee-lawsuit.htm

I agree with trc on this one! Coffee is supposed to be hot - that is inherent in the act of ordering a cup of coffee. Not lukewarm - hot. And anyone who drinks coffee knows that. The thing about that woman is that she placed that coffee between her legs. Now, that is just stupid, no matter if something is hot or not. When you drive off, it's gonna spill. And if it's hot, it's gonna burn. That is a definite "duh" as far as I'm concerned. I don't believe the woman deserved money from McD's. Americans have become just too litigious. (sorry for going off-topic, Kita! =D)

There are hot coffee without scalding your skin. I spilled on-the-go steaming hot coffee before and it never burn me enough for me to be hospitalized.

The point is that she placed it between her legs...and McDonald's coffee has always been hot. All fast food coffees are and always have been. My personal opinion is that she did it on purpose. Yep, she was hospitalized with burns, but she made out for it, too!

You will never be able to fully provision for STUPID!

That's right! And extortion of the insurance companies who insure these mega businesses is never good because it only makes it more expensive for us in the long run.
