Because homeschooled kids are more "sheltered" than public school kids, how do you make sure that they'll adjust to the real world and keep their values?

Has anyone had any experience with Liberty Online for high schoolers? Any suggestions for other distance schooling for high school? I'd like to find a school with a fundamental baptist foundation.

I have a 2 1/2yr old kiddo who I recently bought a couple of Abeka books/flash cards for. I have: Arts & Crafts with Button Bear for 2s Learning Numbers with Button Bear for 2s Letters and Sounds N (actually for 3s) and Letter Picture flashcards. It looks like according to the online order form the only other things I could get that are not marked (optional) for a 2yr old would be the Child Art for 2s and Number Concept flashcards. I plan to get those. Looking in the Arts & Crafts and Learning Numbers book I see on the bottom where it shows what week, based on the 40 week curriculum, to use that activity. The Arts & Crafts starts at Week 3 and the #'s…

Question: Is there a main Homeschooling corporation that governs Homeschooling in America? Does each Church use what is best for their members, as far as resources, contacts, etc?

Hello, we have used Abeka materials in the past, tried other things for a few years, and are now coming back to Abeka (it is such a great curriculum!). We have ordered 6 DVD courses that my 15 and 14 year olds will be using (3 courses each - math, science, english). Everything/everybody else will just be the materials with no DVDs. We are using the Independent Option, not the accredited option. My question is, for those who have used the DVD courses in the upper grades, approximately how long does each class (including both DVD and seatwork) take each day? I am trying to work out a basic school schedule and this would help me greatly. Thank you.

PARENTS, 54 UNIQUE BENEFITS OF HOMESCHOOLING By Joel Turtel April 22, 2008 NewsWithViews.com Parents, is homeschooling the right choice for you and your children? Maybe you think you don?t have the time to homeschool because you work. Perhaps you don?t have confidence in your ability to teach your kids because you never took ?teaching? courses. But consider the alternative. Public schools can destroy your children?s self-esteem, destroy their ability to read, strangle their love of learning, put them in physical and moral danger, and wreck their future. In contrast, here?s 54 unique benefits homeschooling can give you and your kids, as written and explaine…

I plan on homeschooling my child, but it's something I've never mentioned to anyone other than my mother and one of my brothers. Not that I'm ashamed or embarassed, but rather the subject never comes up. My sister (who is not saved) sends her two boys to public school, and my oldest brother (who is saved) has three children who are and will be going to public schools too. Anyway, once my son is old enough, I will begin homeschooling him (Lord willing!!), and I know the questions will start bombarding me from every corner. Not only from immediate family, but extended family too (my cousins, my aunts and uncles, etc.). No one in my family has ever homeschooled, so I guess I…

What Can We Expect under an Obama Administration? Dear HSLDA Members and Friends of Homeschooling: Since the election of Barack Obama as U.S. president, HSLDA has received more than a few calls from both members and nonmembers. Some are quite concerned about the future of homeschooling under an Obama presidency. First of all, let us always remember that ?God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind? (2 Timothy 1:7). He also instructs us to be wise, plan, and be prepared in everything we do. Despite HSLDA?s efforts prior to the election to get an official statement from the Obama campaign regarding their position on homeschooling, w…

EDINBURGH, Scotland - In this age of cell phones, text messages and computer keyboards, one Scottish school has returned to basics. It's teaching youngsters the neglected art of writing with a fountain pen. There is no clacking of keyboards in most classrooms at the Mary Erskine and Stewart's Melville Junior School, although there is a full range of facilities for computer lessons and technology isn't being ignored. But the private school's principal believes the old-fashioned pens have helped boost the academic performance and self-esteem of his 1,200 pupils. "The pens improve the quality of work because they force the children to take care, and better work improv…

I have been invited by a friend of mine who is part of a homeschool group to be part of their music day on Friday. I am bringing all of my instruments (and borrowing a few I don't have) and get to demonstrate them to the kids in the group. I will be doing the normal band instruments and then my folk instruments as well. I have a hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, bowed psaltry, concert zither, auto harp, pianolyn, hog-nosed psaltry, oh, a few others, too.... I haven't kept up with the band instruments that much, though, except for french horn and some trumpet, so I hope I don't embarrass myself too much.

Unfortunately, I am a single mom. However, I have a great desire to homeschool my son in the future (he is still only a toddler). I am blessed to be living with my mom and my older brother, who have both allowed me to be a stay-at-home mom since the day my son was born. I am actually waiting to test next year, in hopes of entering an ROP LVN program, and perhaps later down the road, I will be able to advance myself to an RN. This is my thought-out plan. To become an LVN before my son is old enough to start school, and then once he starts school, I can work 3-4 nights a week in graveyard shifts. Then I can be home during the day. But here are some prOBlems . . . Will I b…

NOTE: Watch the video at the web site. You'll see young children learning from a parents but, the comments fail to mention "parent" instead they say others. (they hate the dreaded P word...i.e. parents) The New Science of Learning "We're finding that social aspects of learning are very important at all ages," said Meltzoff, who explained that this is especially the case for young children who learn "most ... A great new homeschooling website has been created by a homeschool mom. This website has some very useful features along with a unique time-saving directory and summary of homeschool websites including parents' favorite websites. I love the questions and answers, it is such a help with homeschool questions. It'd also be nice if many of us could help with questions and polls that need to be answered, especially from the experienced homeschool moms! I'm hoping we can acquire a huge network of homeschool IFB moms so we can help, support, and encourage each other. If you know of any other homeschoolers, feel free to tell them also. You can register at: http://www.homeschoolwa…

Ok so we are in our first full year of homeschool, we ended up going with ace which I really think I like, so far. Now for the problem, my son is taking forever with his work, he has problems with his mind wondering and he lets things distract him from his work, wether he is at the kitchen table or in his room at his desk. any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks..

I was homeschooled for the majority of my life and have no regrets. I am not a recluse or a loner by no means but am not a very outgoing person. My children on the other hand take after my wife who is very sociable. Am I doing my children an injustice by homeschooling? There is no way I could put them in the public school system, but at the same time private schools around the house are way out of my budget.

I was given the opportunity to put Nathaniel into the Christian school that I attended. We have been home-schooling him, and he would be going into 3rd grade at home, but we put him into 2nd grade at school to keep him with his age group. The work he brings home is stuff that he has already learned and is more advanced than this work. His teacher stopped my wife last week and let her know that the teacher will not be sending the reading homework home with him. The first time he read in class, she knew he was at a higher reading level than the other kids. Nathaniel just needs to read for 15 minutes at home out loud from a book that we feel is more his level. I am wr…

So my son's school offering a curriculum by his school. It by an organization called com ittee for children. they say it is a very successful material. Successful on what? believe it is offered in alot of public schools. I never liked teaching kid from material from organizations (hence why I am an INDEPENDENT baptist). I feel the teaching should be done by the heart from the teacher herself - even if she developed a method herself. I feel that she should deal with each child individually and not by materials written by some popular organization. It help shape the child individually. Teaching from a very popular organized materials make me think of communism. yo…

by Aurora Lipper, Supercharged Science This article teaches kids about chemistry and is an excellent introduction to the totally fun activities in homeschool chemistry (including exothermic reactions, phase shifts, and acid indicators). It?s also good for boy scouts working on a badge, or for any kids that love science experiments. These experiments are part of a homeschool science program that I teach, and I promise your kids will love it. Chemistry is an exciting subject for kids of any age, especially if you set up a natural discovery environment for them to safely explore in. Let's find out how to do this with your own homeschool science learning environment. A…

It?s also good for boy scouts working on a badge, or for any kids that love science experiments. These experiments are part of a homeschool science program that I teach, and I promise your kids will love it. Crystals are formed with atoms line up in patterns when the substance solidifies (or the liquid evaporates and leaves the rest behind). There are crystals everywhere ? in the form of salt, sugar, sand, diamonds, quartz, and many,…
