On this episode of the Spiritual Leadership Podcast, I sat down with one of my closest friends and mentors in the ministry, Dr. Don Sisk. We discussed an article he recently wrote for the Baptist Voice magazine and ministry127.com on the topic of disagreement without disunity. His thoughts on ministry relationships was a blessing to me, and I trust it will be an encouragement to you as well. Dr. Sisk’s original article is here If you cannot view this video in your email or RSS reader, click here.) I have been watching a thread in another venue, and the subject of apostleship has come up. The people in this group are 99% Baptists, some IFB, some SBC, and some Free Will Baptists....The are also people from other churches invovled in this group. This subject has come up many times, and I find that there are some who believe that the Apostleship that was afforded those whom Jesus had called during his ministry, and the Saul, who became the Apostle Paul aren't the only apostles. Does the Bible teach that apostleship ended with these men, or is there apostolic succession taught? Are there apostles today. Can you back up your view with Scripture, please. I know what I was…

The deity of Jesus is one of the most important question in this book, and every believer should have a biblical answer to this question. Why is that? Because there is more confusion around the person of Jesus Christ than any other human figure in history, while most people will readily accept that Jesus was once a man, many will rage at the claim that He was more than a man. It is worth noting that a compelling argument is made stating that Jesus never mentioned, nor does the Bible document Him saying, “I am God worship me.” Although Jesus does not explicitly use those words, we do have several statements in the Bible that would imply the charact…

Tobacco Use 1 2

So, here is a question I have for consideration. Generally, I understand that all tobacco use is frowned upon by most believers. Yet, there seems to be a historical acceptance for some uses over others, and I am curious to see what others here have to say on the subject. So, clearly, cigarettes, we reject because they are, in general, harmful to the health, with all the garbage and poisons that are added to tobacco in cigarettes, with exception, perhaps, of the "native American" brands, which tend to be pure tobacco, which itself is pretty much harmless. Also, however, cigarettes are seen as having a bad influence, poor associations-they carry a reputation of …

Hebrews 6:4-6 was a passage that worried me for a long time until someone showed me the importance of the the first 4 words, "for it is impossible". Here is the passage. Hebrews 6:4-6 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. Notice the descriptions of people that follows "for it is impossible". Each phrase is joined by the conjunction 'and' …

1 Corinthians 2:15-16 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 6:1-5 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints? 2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? 3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life? Philippians 1:9-11 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all j…

I was curious if any on these boards thought lying to save someone was justified, was merely overlooked by the Lord, was still wrong but allowed by the Lord anyway. Please give Biblical reasons for your conclusions on this subject. Two main passages come to mind, and I want to look at a third type of related incidence. Yes, I believe lying is wrong in all cases, especially for the New Testament believer today - however, I am wondering why God allowed or possibly overlooked these two cases in the Bible and how that applies to people hiding Jews and others whose lives were at peril during the Second World War. And no, don't get the idea that I am condemning or judging …

Our church is going to be showing "The Chosen" during midweek services and talking about the show. It seems to have gained a lot of support in the church I attend, though I am not on board with this decision. I believe it would be detrimental and overly humanizes Jesus Christ, taking away from his deity. Care to give any input along with the poll..please, feel free to do so.

I was attending an IFB church when I first heard that being Saved and having spiritual fellowship with God were two different things. If I understood correctly that although once saved that salvation is secure BUT an unrepentant sin could cause a break in fellowship with God. It was explained to me that Jesus redeemed physical and spiritual death on the cross. The spiritual death was paid when the father turned away from son during hours 12-3 pm...when Jesus cried out asking why God had forsaken him. On the surface it does make sense since Adam and Even died a spiritual death first and physical death later. What I couldn't understand was how salvation …

The English language has rules; they are called grammar. Is it important for understanding your Bible? Let me start with a question as an example. Do you like reading about the apostle Peter as much as me? No wait. Do you like reading about the apostle Peter as much as I? Which is correct? The answer is "I" not "me". How to tell. Supply the understood verb, in this case 'do', to the sentence and the answer becomes clear. Do you like reading about the apostle Peter as much as me do? Or do you like reading about the apostle Peter as much as I do? "Me do" just sounds stupid. I believe it is important to know what a verse says before you explain what it means. I am hoping for…

Why independent Baptist churches are not mega churches, this may sound like a hard question but it is not. Jesus preached that it is better to give than to receive, this is one main reason why the independent fundamental Baptist church are not Mega churches, because the more they receive the more they give, they support many missionaries here and around the world. The more they have, the more they give, not focusing on building a building and having thousands of members. This is not God‘s plan, they are Church planters, to share the gospel and not man.

I realize this may be a somewhat questionable question because of the topic, but I feel it's necessary to ask. Here's some back story before I ask the question. I'm an assistant pastor at my church. I'm also the RU director. I had a guy, last year, get busted for being in town in drag. People told me they saw him. I confronted him, not in a harsh way, but in a Biblical way. He told me it was true. I've been working closely with this guy for a year now. Very few people knew about it. He came to me later and thanked me for confronting him and said the Lord was dealing with him. I thought "amen, that's what we are supposed to do." He's got 15 months sober from a…

The message of popular culture is clear: “You have what it takes. Dig deep, persevere hard, and reach for the stars.” There’s value in encouraging people to have confidence to seek to make a difference with their lives. But the whole message of self-sufficiency is misleading. Conversely, mature, clear-minded Christians wake up every day with an awareness that they don’t have what it takes to make a success of the day. They know that they can’t be and do all that God has for them that day or the rest of their lives without the grace of God. There is nothing that reveals our need for God’s grace like a trial. One of the very reasons God allows difficulties and even fa…

I'm pretty sure this has been covered before. But where in scripture does the Holy Spirit baptise anyone at salvation? I know regeneration is sort of figuratively the Holy Spirit baptizing.. but I don't actually see it in scripture. The key verse many like to use is 1 Co 12:13 But 1... later the body being defined is the one at Corinth. 2... 'spirit' here has been capitalized but can be small s. So.. being baptized in water.. in one spirit of unity...in reference to the church they want to join. Paul I think joined Antioch..so he would have been baptised in reference to that body. The Corinthians baptised in reference to the…

Telling anyone one that you’re a non-denominational Christian. This tells me, that this Christian, is open to making changes at any moment, willing to accept or not accept, depending on where they stand that day. I believe talking in tongues today but not tomorrow. A little bit confusing in my opinion.

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one (John 10:28-30 KJV). Revelation That Leads to Salvation All people, everywhere, experience revelation from God about Himself. “”For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse" (Rom. 1:20). Some receive clearer revelation than others. Jesus said, “”If I had not come and spoke…

In the closed poll for the meaning of "Heart of the earth" in Matthew 12:40 there were no votes for the tomb and 4 votes for other. I wonder what some of the other meanings might be.

I just heard a Calvinist in my Facebook feed, John McArthur, saying that God hates sinners. I've heard and seen this debated many times. Some say God hates the sin but loves the sinner and others say that God hates both and use various scriptures to prove it either way. But what Mr. McArthur says doesn't agree with one thing. Jesus Christ Himself told us that, to be like God, you have to "Love your enemies". So, if someone does something to you, in a really serious way, you are commanded by God to do something that he wouldn't even do Himself? By that logic, you would be taking a higher road than God would. I don't think so. God says his ways are higher than our ways. So…

Now the man who "smote his breast", and said "God be merciful to me, a sinner", was justified. The Bible says that if one "calls upon the name of the Lord" they shall be saved. It also says "Confess with thy mouth and beleive in thine heart" etc. These are certainly examples of "praying a prayer". I would argue that the "thief on the cross" did the same: he spoke directly to God and was saved. So if someone prays a "one time prayer" believes on Jesus for salvation, and the Holy Ghost indwells them, that "one time prayer" was enough. So what does this guy mean by this and what drives such a man to constantly preach negative stuff like this? And what drives such a man to t…

I said no, why would you think that. He mentioned that part of his seed, and Eve. I told him, that the Bible would have told us plainly. If he did touch her. Note: if the title topic is too strong, it could be changed. Or reworded thanks TGL

It’s hard to envision a more grace-filled response and Spirit-anointed outcome to a trial than Ron Hamilton’s when he lost his eye to cancer. You may already know the story: As a young husband, Ron was diagnosed with cancer behind his left eye. The surgery to remove the cancer also resulted in the loss of his eye. After surgery, he found that kids gravitated toward him wearing a patch. They were full of questions, and some called him “Patch the Pirate.” It was though this tragedy—and Ron’s trust in the Lord through it—that the ministry of “Patch the Pirate” began. Over the past forty-five years now, Ron and Shelly Hamilton have produced over forty children’s musical au…

You’ve heard the maxim, “Teamwork makes the dream work.” There is much truth to this statement, and no one modeled teamwork better than the apostle Paul. Over the years at Lancaster Baptist, I have preached verse-by-verse through many books of the Bible. This past Sunday, I began a new preaching series through Romans. A few years ago, we did three series through the pastoral epistles: 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus. (The expanded outlines for these pastoral epistles are now in a book, set to release next week as part of the Striving Together Study Library.) Throughout Paul’s pastoral epistles, we repeatedly see the necessity and value Paul placed on teamwork in minis…

I've recently learned that in Ancient Jewish Weddings (esp. Galilean) were a type of the rapture. The groom would abduct the bride, take her to a chamber in his father's house where they would stay for seven days before coming out and finalizing their marriage ceremony. Where could I find actual Jewish documentation on this subject?

We have a friend that was very confused. She mentioned that the pastor said today there are no longer miracles. She felt sad, for she said she felt that she had witness or saw a miracle. Many gifts, have ceased example speaking in tongues, where does miracle fall in this category, do you believe it ceased, and are not for today, or miracles have different sizes, big miracles in the past, smaller miracles today. I believe the pastor could’ve been talking about those miracle pastor workers out there, but I’m not sure because he didn’t specify the type of miracles that weren’t for today. But to come out and say miracles are not for today, like tongues are not for today, wasn…
