My mom just sent me a prayer cloth and she's United Methodist. What's this about?? :puzzled:

It's hard to explain because there are various ideas about prayer clothes. I've heard some preachers proclaim that if you pray while holding the prayer cloth it will somehow hold your prayers and you can send it to others (oftentimes to a TV preacher who says he'll pray over it...after he processes your hefty donation, of course!).

For some it's similar to worry beads or some see it like the Catholic necklace. Something to hold that somehow makes your prayers better or some such stuff.

Some see it as similar to the NT accounts of someone touching something an apostle had touched and receiving healing from it.

Really though, nothing biblical about a prayer cloth. Mostly just superstition, tradition and sometimes a way to fleece folks.

If it is what I suspect it is a pentacostalish teaching. Someone prays over a cloth and anoints it with oil and it is given to someone with health issues to supposedly heal them. They take this from Acts 19:11-12. Problem is, it doesn't work for them today like it did at that point in history. If it did it would be rather obvious.

Prayer cloths are a Pentecostalish invention I believe. I used to be a Pentecostal. I went to church one time and they gave me a cloth anointed with oil and I was told to keep it with me. It was supposed to heal me or something I guess. Regardless, is not Biblical and should be kept away from.
