My mom was lifting some boxes a few hours ago and we think she dislocated a disc in her back which is now causing her a tremendous amount of pain and she is not able to walk. Please pray for her and if anyone has any recommendations, I would love to hear it. We aren't sure whether she should get an x-ray or whether it would be better for her to lay down or sit. Either way, she is in exrutiating pain. Thanks guys!

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, but I had 4 or 5 episodes where I went to bend over, or lift something, and I found myself on the floor unable to move because of the pain. I would lay there for about an hour or so and it would subside enough for me to get up. I would be in pain for about 3 days. Then nothing for another few months when it would happen again. From all the reading I did, and the treatment I recieved here is my advice. take it with a few large lumps of salt.

If it is in her lower back, it is probably muscular. Take aleve (a mild muscle relaxer) and see if it improves. Its kinda difficult to slip a disk by lifting, but VERY easy to pull a muscle.

If worst comes to worst, you can go see a doctor and they can give some stronger muscle relaxers.

Here is the controversial part. When she is able to move, go see a good chiropractor.

Yeah a chiropractor will help...

My dh had a slipped disc and he was told by his chiropractor (a very good one, too bad we still don't live around him) to lie on a firm bed or couch and alternate 20 minutes of heat and then 20 minutes of ice....the ice reduces the swelling and the heat relaxes the tight muscles. It helped him ALOT! Have her try that back and forth for maybe two hours and see how she feels. Once the swelling and muscle cramping is eased, she really should see a reputable chiropractor.

Praying for her! I know from personal experience how excrutiating that pain can be!!! Ice (and heat if you follow it by ice like Suzy said, because heat alone will swell the muscle) brings down the swelling which, if it is a pulled muscle, is what causes the pain. By all means, get her to a chiropractor!!!!! I wouldn't even wait until the pain goes away. I have had to deal with these kinds of problems personally for the last 17 years and I know for a fact that I wouldn't be walking today if it weren't for the chiropractor that I went to!!! Praise the Lord for a good chiro!!

She went to a doctor yesterday morning and she confirmed that it was a herniated disk. Seems her hip came out of joint too, I think. :loco
She is already feeling much better so thanks for your prayers. She is going to physical therapy and it seems like she is recovering quickly because of her being in such good shape. I'm the family chauffeur now too. hehe

Yeah, she has a heating pad. But the thing is, since it is a bone problem(slipped disc), what would help a muscle strain, won't help in this situation. :smile

Not really, that is what my dh had to do with a slipped disc...my dh is telling me now that the heat helps the muscles (which are straining and cramping to put the disc back in place) and the cold helps bring down the swelling. He is telling me right now he had the same thing and for real, alternating heat and cold helps a ton.

Oh...I can see how that would work. With the disc pushing into the nerves and stuff. Interesting... :thumb
