I will never open something until its paid for. Besides that its not mine to open until I have paid for it, to me if I opened it that would be dishonest, even if its a coke that I going to drink right them.

I will never return something unless it will not work or its broken or damaged or ruined and or they have given me the wrong item.

Country girl here - I hardly ever go to "town" and when I do my shopping I do it the old fashioned way - I go in and get what I need, I pay for it, and then I go home. I prefer going to Thrift Shops or Second Hand Stores, or even the flea market before trying to find what I need in a store - it is more fun, and a form of recycling still good items that otherwise might end up in a landfill somewhere.

If I am hungry, I go home and eat.

99% of the time I will bring a drink in with me, but I would never open one from the store.

I remember when I was a young teenager, my father, sister and I went into a grocery store, and my father went right to the bakery and picked up 3 donuts. He handed one to me, and one to my sister, and told us that it would be OK if we ate them because it was not stealing. As soon as he was done handing them out, I put mine back in the bag they were in, and told him that he could pay for it and then I would be happy to eat it. I have seen my mother eat a grape out of the bag, and I told her, that it was stealing. She disagreed. I have lived my life by this concept since then.

Can you clarify something? I understand the grapes, but were the donuts in a box, or sold by weight. If sold by weight then I agree, if it was something you would pay for anyway, then I see no problem with eating one prior to paying for it, so long as you pay for it.

Of course!

It was an open bakery, where you pick your own, and put them in a bag/box, and when you get to the register the cashier counts how many are in the bag, and charges you for them. Being that I know my father as well as I do, and I knew him back then, he was not going to tell the cashier about the other 2.

Right in that case, I agree.

I wonder if anyone knows anyone in the Grocery business. Do they care, so long as you eventually pay for whatever you ate? Do they prefer you NOT eat while shopping? I have never seen signs either way.

Way back in the early '70s there was a news article about a man that opened a box of donuts while still in the store and ate some of them before purchasing the box of them. They arrested him and fined him heavily. I guess times have changed.

I once knew a guy that bought an item identical to one that he had that broke-down. He took both the old one and the new one apart and exchanged the insides and the cases they were housed in, so that the new one was then defective and his old one had the new innards in it. Then he sent the new one (with old guts in it) back to the factory for warranty replacement.

His argument was that the manufacturer makes so many of these that they can easily afford it, whereas he cannot. He went on to say that their insurance can easily cover their costs. We have a word for this:::: It is spelled, F-R-A-U-D . For people that do that sort of thing I have nothing but criticism and disgust.

Do you agree with the reaction?

I agree this is wrong.

When it comes to food, I generally don't open stuff that I don't buy. I can always return it later if I don't like it.

When it comes to stuff like technology (ahem Best Buy), I will pay for it, and then when I'm next to the LP/greeter guy, I will tell him I'm opening it to make sure I don't have a box full of bricks.

I don't have a problem with people that want to eat while shopping, as long as they pay for what they open. But I don't believe you should try-before-you-buy.

How many people do you suppose has eaten something like a donut, them when paying out forgot to pay for the donut that is out of sight and out of mind?

I think that this will not happen if you don't eat it until you have made your purchase and paid for it. After all the bananas, apples, donuts or whatever it may be you put in your cart are not yours until you have paid for them.

Them you can eat the whole thing and not worry about forgetting to pay for the item.

I believe it sets a bad example for children and everyone else for a Christian to do such a thing while shopping.

Thru my years of growing up in a country store, and the 7 years I ran one myself, there was many dollars that walked out the door unpaid for because some did so unintended, others did so on purpose.

And yes, I have called it to the attention of some, but I stopped it because most people get mad about it and cause a scene that helps no one. The store owner gets put in a no win situation.

Yeah...I can imagine handing a cashier a banana peel with saliva all over it to ring up at the register! :roll

I go to the store, find what I want, put it in the cart, pay for it, load it in the car and take it home. I wouldn't even think of opening food or drink in the store. Of course, I've seen others do this. I've even seen people standing and eating handfuls of grapes off the display.
