What is the opinion of Charles Stanley's teachings?

First off, he's not KJVO so he'll correct the bible on occasion. If I remember he doesn't even use the KJV during his preaching so it's good to look up the verses in your KJV if he quotes from another version.

Also, his messages tend to be milk for babes which you pretty much have to do if you want to be heard on the radio or TV. He has preached on eternal security which is a plus since not many preachers, including IFB's, preach on that doctrine but sometimes it seems like he's more of a counsellor and not a preacher.

He's in no way a bad as Chuck Swindoll, IMO.

I haven't heard his preaching in a long time, but I know that my hubby was loaned a set of cassettes (see - told you it was a long time ago!   ) a number of years ago from a series Stanley had preached. They were biblically sound (although I don't remember the topic).  That is a limited example, because the series was a limited subject, but there it is.

When he stated that he'd resign as pastor if he were divorced then did an about-face when it happened, he lost his credibility in my eyes.

As a babe in Christ I watched his sermons for several years and did learn many nuggets of bible truth.  It bothered me that he had been divorced but I did not know that doctrine fully well yet.  Also wanted his cool looking bible but when I discovered what it was, yuck!  I was growing and eating meat elsewhere and when I finally learned the requirements of a preacher and learned that he was not qualified and the fact that his radical son started preaching in his absence, that did it for me.  I bought a ton of his books but the Holy Ghost kept me from getting past the first few pages!

Led astray by ecumenism.

Yeah, but the question was about his teachings not his personal life.

He did turn in his resignation but the church board wouldn't accept it and called him in for discussion. Eventually the board talked him into staying.

No, I'm not saying that's a good excuse to not resign, but that's what happened.

When I was a young Christian I got some good teaching form Dr. Stanley. His preaching used to be much more solid and hitting to the point in practical ways. In more recent years he's watered down his sermons and it almost seems as if he's bought into his own popularity. He's much less solid in some areas, even questionable or wrong in a few, with far too much milk with only tiny bits of meat on occasion.

I enjoyed and learned from some of his older books. The last two books of his I read were very disappointing and from what I've been told, his newer books are not any better.

Sadly, he seems to be another pastor who started out pretty good but popularity and perhaps other factors have weakened his ministry.

It may have actually been better had he resigned after the divorce. It likely would have done him some good to get out of the public eye, spend much time alone with God in prayer and in His Word. The door would have still been open for him to write books and other things, and hopefully after extended time alone with the Lord he would have become more solidly grounded and actually done more for the kingdom of God. (But that's just speculation on my part)

So, if I understand you correctly, a pastor's character does not matter as long as he is popular and people like his teaching?

Based on I Tim 3:2 (goes to character) and verses 4-5 (goes to home life), I doubt he's qualified to remain as pastor.  At bare minimum, he has no credibility if the sermon is about either one of these subjects.

Charles Stanley holds to the unbiblical view that, while all of the saved are part of God's Kingdom, some of the saved will be judged at the Judgment Saet of Christ and cast into outer darkness.

What?  I never heard him say this.  Wow.
