Does anyone know where I can get consumer information of hearing aids? My wife and I are wanting to order a digital hearing aid and the one we want is advertised on hearingaidcentral.com but I have not been able to find any consumer information as to their reliability.

Any help would be appreciated

Have you checked Consumer Report? To do so online you have to be a member (paid), but your local library should have issues of the magazine. They are usually really good about comparing prices and quality.

I have spent about 2 hours investigating but have found nothing irregular but I have found nothing positive either. The company is owned by hearing central llc located in Lake forest Ill and seems to be legit. There is very little information out there concerning hearing aids apart from manufacturing ads that always claim they are the best. I've read the report from the Mayo clinic as well as other reports and nearly all of them state the same thing that there is virtually no difference between the top seven or eight companies when it comes to quality. The lack of evidence against this company would indicate that they are worth a gamble and the savings lies close to $1200.00.

I would just like to get a yeah or a nay from someone who knows or knows someone.

My wife has tinnitus and has been wanting to find a hearing aid that would help. The research I did led to an ocean of fast talking, slickly-packaged sites charging obscene amounts for fairly simple devices. While there are devices that can help tinnitus, every place I found advertising that they could offer it, wanted fees up front, expensive tests, and even then could only give a chance that they'd eventually ever have anything that would help. lots of money, but no guaranteed results.

I'm an expert on this:) how much hearing loss do you have? mild moderate? If it is severe, it is best to go with analog instead of digital.

phonak have always been reliable for me as a child (and you know how children get :)

our insurance took care of the hearing test but will not contribute to the hearing aid. I talked with the hearing doctor about the specific hearing loss, the ranges and severity. My wife's hearing loss is in both ears and is in the 8k hz range meaning (if I understand correctly) she needs amplification of about 110 decibels in order to hear normally which is not going to happen. She will never clearly hear everything that is being said but if she can hear at 85 to 90 percent the money will be well spent.

If we end up ordering this hearing aid and it produces what we hope it produces I will post and let others know.

deafnva77,

I posted as you were posting. If I made a mistake in my understanding of the chart please feel free to correct me.

It is interesting that you suggest analog. Most of the reading I have done says that analog magnifies all sound and does not discriminate between background noise and specific noise while the digital aids process sounds faster, more clearly and filter out certain background noises.

I went to Phonak's web site but could see no pricing.

The reason I suggest analogs because digital can be too soft. I had digital and I couldn't get the audiologist to make it more powerful for me. And sometimes I wanted the background noises to hear the pastor preaching (it think it is a background noise sometimes -- this goes with musics) I couldn't control the filtering.

let me find my old post about it. I was much happier with my analog and so were many deaf people like me.

you'll have to go to a phonak dealership for pricing.

I have cochlear implant now, so I no longer wear hearing aids.. they may have made digital better, but I found it very frustrating when I had it. So go ahead with the digital, it would be better if she started it out with digital anyway, then she won't be so spoiled and picky like I am :P

I will ask a lady in my church about her hearing aids she wears. Hers even comes with a remote control so she can adjust her hearing aids with just a touch of a button. The remote is about the size of a credit card.

I was able to speak with this lady for just a moment tonight. She has Phonak hearing aids http://www.phonak.com/. You can even get a remote control for your hearing aids on a watch! This company offers different kinds of hearing aids, but I did not find out from this lady which one she has.
