Video footage has been released showing a Polish lorry driver driving his vehicle into oncoming traffic on the M20 in Kent while under the influence of alcohol.
Ireneusz Popiielarz, 34, performed a U-turn on the motorway after he missed the junction 9 turning for Ashford.Footage, just released by Kent Police, shows Popiielarz cutting across three lanes of oncoming traffic in December. He was jailed for 18 months at Canterbury Crown Court on 27 January.

Dangerous driving charge

A Kent Police spokeswoman said: "Popiielarz drove his lorry for several hundred metres past junction 9 of the M20, before performing a U-turn across all three lanes, and then travelled the wrong way back towards junction 9."He was in lane one travelling London-bound in the coast-bound carriageway, forcing oncoming traffic to avoid colliding with him. "He was eventually stopped by Kent Police traffic officers from the specialist Roads Policing Unit who had witnessed the incident from the opposite carriageway."
Popiielarz, who one and a half times the drink-drive limit, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving while under the influence of alcohol.

He was sentenced to 18 months in prison and disqualified from driving for three years.

He will have to take an exstensive driving test before being allowed to drive in the UK again.

Another problem we have with continental truck drivers is "side swiping", as they are on the left hand of their cab, they have a blind spot, and often pull out into the side of an overtaking vehicle. Our church secretary was side swiped by a polish truck, two or three years ago.

Unfortunately the penalty for driving drunk is essentially meaningless in America. It costs about $2000 or so in litigation along with a few months probation (government money maker) and maybe 100 hours community service. Only after multiple DUIs or those arrests where someone was injured/killed because of the drunkard do they face eventual jail time and loss of driving "priveledges".

The more people that hits the highway's, the more of that stuff will go on, while the highways will become more unsafe. Laws have never stopped people from doing wrong, & never will, neither does harsh fines, nor prison sentences.

That happened to me - with a frog tanker driver. He hit my read n/s bumper & spun my car across the front of the tanker & hit me again with his n/s front. I spun across all 3 lanes nearly to the centre & kept spinning back again & across the hard shoulder. The bank there was a gentle slope, so I slowed down & stopped safely on the hard shoulder. Shaken but unhurt - thanks to God for his protection!

The driver stopped. Others in his convoy came back on the other carriageway, stopped, & ran across both carriageways.

The car was still drivable, though I wasn't in a fit state to drive.

There are several in this area who have long ago lost their license and paid fines for driving drunk. Now they drive around without a license. A few of them drive tractors around to skirt the law.

As more than ½ the trucks on the motorways in our conty are probably foreign, and side swiping was a big problr, Ket Police were giving then fresnel lenses as then entered the country. These were supposed to stick on their side window, and divert their veiw, so they could see overtaking vehicles.

As you probably know, we drive on the left, the right side and everyone else drives on the right, the wrong side, :bleh:

When I lived in a tiny town in IL years ago, those who had lost their licenses would drive their riding mowers from their home into town to the gas station where they could get their booze.

They used to do that here too! It got to the point where there were so many lawn mowers on the streets the city passed some kind of ordinance that allowed the police to get them off the streets while still allowing folks who live in town to be able to ride their mower on the streets from one property to another.

One guy used to ride by on his mower with his girlfriend riding on the back. Then they would come back by with her holding a case of beer.

Years ago, a friend of mine that was bad to drink. One day a friend of his stopped by, & he shared his drinks with him. After the friend left he got to thinking I would like to have some more. He was home along with no transportation. He got on his riding lawn mower headed to a bootlegger down the gravel road them onto a state highway, on the way he got stopped, & yes, got a DUI. He was a sad site, he had a bad case of arthritis. Could not walk good anyway so you can imagine what he would be like drunk. Arthritis is one terrible disease.

Here, I should think you should have a licence to drive a mower on the road, or a tractor, or dump truck. I think you can drive invalid scooters on the road, but even then, I'm not sure.

For mopeds & such, it use to be under a certain HP, no licence required.

It still is in some places. My sister and her husband have small scooters and they don't have to be licenced.

Over here, Mopeds under 50cc can be driven on a car licence. All two wheelers can be driven on motorcycle licences. In France you can drive a small moped from the age of 14, without a licence.
