Do you live in a "dry county" where alcohol is not sold? Up until a few years ago I did. Now it is a... "moist county?" No idea what to call it other than only restaurants that seat over 100 people can server alcohol, and I think 70% (maybe 80) of their sales must be food. It was a big deal when the law passed. Working in law enforcement I hear a lot of politics and often am disturbed by it. I mostly try to stay out of it and thankfully I'm in my own little hole that I usually don't have to hear it unless someone brings it to my area. Nonetheless, I often hear officers talk about how making us a wet county would be great because of the revenue it would bring. But I have always thought of the evil that revenue is coming from! It's bad enough we already have some flowing in from these restaurants that serve alcohol but it would be terrible if there were more.

And plus they whine that they have to drive out to the county line to get their beer. I already get enough calls on the issues alcohol causes in homes and on the streets. Making alcohol more readily available isn't going to solve any of our prOBlems.

I live in a dry county, they've tried several times to get our county wet, yet if always fails big time.

Our state does not honor its counties wishes. Even though they vote it dry the state ABC board offers private club licenses in dry counties. We have 2 that I know of. The Country Club, golf haven, and the haven for the social lights and the whose who of our city enjoy their drinking at the club, plus the local Eagles has a licenses.

Its quite amazing at the number of church members that be members of the country club and participate in the drinking sessions and seem to think its OK with their Lord.

As the story goes a local pastor hit a young boy in the 12th grade about being save. Of course his parents or of the social light drinkers at the country club and when golf is going they're at the golf course that Sunday morning instead of church, and of course Sunday morning is the only time they ever attend church services. Any way the young 12th grader told the pastor, when I see my parent put more emphases on church than they do the country club, and drop more money in the churches collection plate than they spend at the country club each month, them I will consider this Jesus you speak of, until them I'm going to enjoy life to its fullest just as father and mother do while they let me run foot lose and fancy free while they play the social light circle of whose who at the country club and private parties.

I might add, the Country Club, golf course, every since it was built, has been know as the social lite watering hole. In the early days they had no licenses, but being as who they were, they did as they wish and the local laws turned their eyes away and let them do as please. Therefore many such as I when golf is mentioned we automatically think playing golf and drinking goes hand in hand.

Several years back I was out there just for a moment with a friend, of course I was looking very close at everyone, at least half the people I saw had a can of beer in their hands, many had paper cups of which I figure they were enjoying their liquor.

The bar/restaurant attached to our golf course is the main source of DUIs in the county and so happens to fall within the city limits of the city I work for (all of this is not counting the military installation in the county that, of course, sells alcohol and has a few clubs). We had our other 'bar' get shut down because they violated the law by making their income look as though it were mostly food and not alcohol. It was at first, but over time it became a bar and nOBody is going to sell 70% worth of wings and 30% worth of alcohol... especially if wings is about all you offer. Very shady business that caused a lot of trouble in the area.

The Eagles Club, they do good works, giving money to different charities, and or even the city police and the county sheriff. The bar opens early afternoon, from 10 to 30 gather there each evening to shut the bar down each night. Of course they're overlooked as they leave because of the money handed out to the right people.

Before they started their public relations some of them would get tickets, yet the works they did on their public relations stopped this cold. The Country Club, they be the social lites, so they've never been bothered by the city or county. And if they happen to stop one of them, they make sure they safely get home without a ticket.

I mentioned this in another topic, 3 important members of the largest city church, SBC, were recently in a front page picture in our local paper with about 5 members of the Eagles, all smiles. The Eagles was presenting a big check and they were accepting the check. It amazing at the credibility such a place can get if they hand money out to the right people. Of course there was an article, and one of the church members praised the Eagles Club for the wonderful things they do and even commented, it would be hard to do without them. I believe 2 of the church members in that picture are Sunday school teachers, the 3rd one may be to, at least one is a deacon.

People will sell out even in 2010, I suppose you could say they go the way of Judas.

From what I hear the officers were once told to "stay away from the American Legion" because, you got it, the Chief of Police is a member. The officer basically got a slap on the wrist for waiting outside the area of the Legion and pulling someone over for suspected DUI and then arresting them. I don't know the whole truth to the story but that sounds about right.

I've been hit up to join a several Veterans groups, but everyone of them seem to be involved in stuff that I want no part of, and it seems most veteran groups and drinking go hand in hand.

In fact I dropped out of a reunion group, the main reason was they were going in a direction I could not go, yet a professing Christian was pulling that direction.

I'm 63, getting close to 64, the more I study the Bible, the longer I live in this world witnessing what goes on, the more this song rings true.

This world is not my home, I'm just a-passing thru,
My treasures are laid up, Somewhere beyond the blue;
The angels beckon me from Heaven's open door,
And I can't feel at home in this world any more.
O Lord, I know, I have no friend like you,
If heaven's not my home, O Lord what can I do?
The angels beckon me from heaven's open door,
And I can't feel at home in this world any more.

My Savior pardoned me from guilt and shame I know,
I'll trust His saving grace while trav'ling here below;
I know he'll welcome me at heaven's open door,
And I can't feel at home in this world any more.
O Lord, I know, I have no friend like you,
If heaven's not my home, O Lord what can I do?
The angels beckon me from heaven's open door,
And I can't feel at home in this world any more

I have a precious mother up in glory land,
I don't expect to stop until I clasp her hand;
For me she's now in heaven's open door,
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore.
O Lord, I know, I have no friend like you,
If heaven's not my home, O Lord what can I do?
The angels beckon me from heaven's open door,
And I can't feel at home in this world any more

The saints in gloryland are shouting victory,
I want to join their band and live eternally;
I hear the sweetest praise from heaven's open door,
And I can't feel at home in this world any more.
O Lord, I know, I have no friend like you,
If heaven's not my home, O Lord what can I do?
The angels beckon me from heaven's open door,
And I can't feel at home in this world any more

THIS WORLD IS NOT MY HOME
(I'M JUST A PASSING THRU)

Love that song. I have learned that working in law enforcement there is a lot you have to stay away from. Talk about drinkers! Something about the military and law enforcement it seems lol. I'm just thankful I have the strength to stay away from it now. I slipped once but God let me know it wasn't right and showed me exactly why.

Unfortunately, drinking is associated with manliness, toughness. Men if the military and law enforcement often want to project such and somehow believe excessive drinking proves their manliness. Many women have become caught up in this as they try to prove they can keep up with the guys and are tough too.

Many also don't know how to handle the stress that can come from these jOBs and work as a fireman, EMT and such, so they turn to the bottle to drown and mask their prOBlems.

If only they would turn to Christ they could find peace beyond comprehension and learn what it really means to be a man, or a woman.

Working in law enforcement ...

And you call yourself a Christian? The only place you need to be working is at home, taking care of your children and of the house! It is up to the men (of God) to decide how to handle alcohol sales in the county, not you. The decisions you need to concentrate on is how to take care of your children, how to clean the house, how to wash the dishes, how to prepare your husband's food, and which brand of diapers would be most appropriate for the youngest of your children! Shame on you, woman!

Coop, I was wondering...what would Christ have said to Lisa? Could you reformat your reply to fit into Christ's words?

Lisa, alcohol is a destroyer of individuals, families, and communities. Your fellow officers have no idea what they're asking for.

Years back I thought those westerns on TV that I watched growing up was A OK, but they weren't. Before or after they did anything significant they were in the saloon drinking talking it over and or making plans on how to carry it out.

As for as that goes that is the way it was and is on many TV shows.

Yes, there is a lot of pressure to drink...it's so accepted that people think you're wacky if you don't. And it's getting to the point where even Christians are turning more and more to alcohol and justifying it with scripture (which is proof that anyone can take any scripture and twist it to say what they want it to, with any sort of snarly attitude they deem "spiritual"...so just ignore Thomas Cooper. :coolsmiley: ).

The most popular local church always has a high percentage of their youth into drinking and premarital sex. It's amazing how many of the youth from this church each year get pregnant, or get another pregnant, and are caught with booze. Even so, this churches children and youth program is highly applauded because the kids have so much fun and they let the kids do so much. Perhaps some solid Bible teaching and efforts to see the children and youth born again in Christ would be better...

I've actually had parents tell me I should have my children in that church rather than our church because the other church is so much more fun! Most of these are professing Christian parents who say this!!
