If the Sword of the Lord doctor is biased in his findings on alcohol, he is biased for a good reason.

One doesn't need alcohol to acquire the healthy ingredients found in alcohol. That ingredient, resveratrol, is found in the grap. No need to drink toxins to get those benefits... Just drink grape juice.

This is why it's important to have several studies to look at rather than just one or two. The article about the coffee, for example, pointed out that one of the studies was financed by a coffee company and said if that was the only study to look at we would need to be cautious, but then pointed out that many other studies have come to the same conclusions as that study.

The same is true in the grape juice/wine type of studies. Some companies are ethical and pay for a study while leaving all aspects of the study up to independent researchers. Then there are some companies who not only pay for the study, but have control over the study too; which is clearly biased. We also have independent researchers simply looking for the truth about different things.

For the most part, studies on the benefits of wine all point to the benefit coming from the grape, not alcohol. The broader studies indicate what aspect of the grape is of most benefit and put forth that grape juice contains those benefits, often even citing certain brands of grape juice which contain the most of the beneficial ingredients.

Even those studies which focus only upon wine typically, if the whole study is consulted, indicate that only one glass is necessary for the benefits and cautions against drinking any more than that because of the alcohol, and also warns that if one doesn't already drink wine they shouldn't start just to get the health benefit, but rather they should drink grape juice.

More and more, when researchers actually look in-depth into health benefits of various foods and drinks they eventually come to the conclusion that what God created is good for us and better than man's fabricated foods and drugs. Unfortunately, most don't acknowledge God.

Could not the unnamed Sword of the Lord doctor also be biased?

His name was no unnamed, the article had his name included, no, he was not bias, except for being bias with the teachings of the Bible & refused to proclaim anything that goes against God's Word, & drinking does.

I'm very bias, I stay with the Bible, I believe its never wrong but man is, especially when it comes to drinking alcoholic beverages. God knows what is best for each of us after all He created us & our Creator knows more about us that we know about our self, plus He knows what is best for us. Yet many times we ignore Him the do what is right in our very own mind & or following some sinful man, instead of Jesus.

I don't need several studies written by different men on the subject of consuming alcoholic beverages in order to know what is right or wrong & what is best for mankind, all I need is my Bible which is inspired by God which is 100% better than any studies done by mankind.

I thought this thread was about coffee?

We do get off topic once in a while.

You know how it is with a conversation, one thing leads to another, & before you know it, you say, how did we ever start taking about this!!

Coffee isn't a drug.

Amen, John!  After all we are not Amish.  We are Bible Believing Christians.  God put the coffee bean on the earth.  In moderation, coffee has many health benefits.

On the other hand, there are 162 scriptures in the Bible on the evil of drink. Below is just one of them.

Proverbs 20:1... "WINE is a mocker (it can fool you), strong drink is raging:  and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise."

That's right!

We knew a Seventh Day Adventist lady several years ago who was probably saved (by her testimony I think she is saved), and it really bothered her to see Christians drink coffee. For her sake, we wouldn't drink coffee when she was present.

She was a really nice, sweet, police lady. Always wore a very modest dress, spoke softly and kindly, never pressed for anyone to conform to her SDA beliefs, but wouldn't shy away from mentioning them or talking about them.

Her and her family reminded me of strict Mormons and Orthodox Jews with their set of laws/rules they so carefully strive to observe.

Coffee and tea, both of which contain caffeine, have many health benefits, and as medical science is finally catching up they are finding that the caffeine itself has some health benefits.

Amen, brother!  Also, I meant to say Mormon not Amish.  The Amish drink coffee.

Coffee isn't a drug.

I don't know about that...

It is, however, something that is not specifically referenced in Scripture as something we should refrain from giving our neighbors, or as something that is foolish to drink, and merely falls under the admonition of 'all things in moderation'.

I really wonder, sometimes, why God didn't go ahead and tell us not to drink alcohol, period. Maybe because of its medical uses (and I'm not talking antioxidants - I'm thinking more of its pain-deadening uses in past centuries)? He makes it so abundantly clear that it is stupid to drink alcohol, and He'd much rather we didn't do it... sometimes I just wonder. :)

Since the subject has added alcohol or substance abuse, here is what I understand from scripture. Please keep in mind that in no way am I condoning alcoholism.  I have seen what addiction to alcohol has done to physically harm a person's body and ruin families.

Did Jesus transform the water into wine (fermented, alcoholic) or into grape juice (non-alcoholic)?

Obviously, getting drunk from drinking wine requires the presence of alcohol.

Some Scriptures discuss alcohol in positive terms.

Ecclesiastes 9:7  “Drink your wine with a merry heart."

Psalm 104:14-15  God gives wine “that makes glad the heart of men." (I never heard of grape juice doing that).

Amos 9:14  Drinking wine from your own vineyard is a sign of God’s blessing.

Isaiah 55:1  “Yes, come buy wine and milk…”

1 Timothy 5:22-23  Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities. (Medicinal purposes) There is low content of alcohol in over the counter medicines such as NyQuil.

Luke 7:33-34 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.  The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! (Why would the Pharisees judge Jesus for drinking too much grape juice?)

Ephesians 5:18; Proverbs 23:29-35; 1 Corinthians 6:12; Peter 2:19.  It is the abuse of alcohol, drunkenness and/or addiction, that is sinful.

Is drunkenness sinful?  Absolutely!  Is addiction sinful?  Definitely.
