1. The virgin birth and deity of Jesus.

2. The substitutionary death of Jesus.

3. The resurrection of Jesus Christ.

4. The verbal inspiration of the Scriptures.

5. The second coming of Christ.

The first time I ever heard of the fundamentals of the faith, this is what was presented.

I've never heard of the "5 fundamentals," but here is the clearest and most concise list of fundamentals I've run across. BJU students confess this creed daily in their chapel services. I can't believe I still can quote it from memory. (I guess four years of saying it every day does make an impression. :wink )

I believe in the inspiration of the Bible (both the Old and the New Testaments); the creation of man by the direct act of God; the incarnation and virgin birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ; His identification as the Son of God; His vicarious atonement for the sins of mankind by the shedding of His blood on the cross; the resurrection of His body from the tomb; His power to save men from sin; the new birth through the regeneration by the Holy Spirit; and the gift of eternal life by the grace of God.

This is what the Christians of earlier times came up with not to define Christianity, but to define apostate churches, that do not hold to these five things. They are truely a must believe, to be truely Christian.

I just thought it was apropriate to bring back in our day.

Different groups had a little different list. Here is a general list.
1. The Inerrancy of Scripture
2. Substitutionary Atonement
3. The Virgin birth
4. The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ
5. The imminent personal return of Jesus Christ

The Fundamentalist movement start in many Seminaries and schools in the late 1800's and the early 20th Century. It was a reaction to German higher criticism that Came from Europe and was infecting many American and British Schools. It later spread and broke of into various groups. They came up with these five Fundamentals of the Faith. There is a published 4 volume set of the Fundamentals Copyrighted 1917. They were reprinted by Baker Books in 1998. I have a set. They are articles by various conservative scholars to refute German Higher Critcism or liberalism.

They've republished "The Fundamentals" by R.A.Torrey (used to be in 4 volumes) but now it comes in 2 volumes (still the full work) and I got it about 2 months ago from Christian Book Distributors for $14.99. It may still be there for that price.

:amen:

It's very sad, but not only do many professing Christians not believe all five of these today, but many preachers don't either. :sad

I just thought it was apropriate to bring back in our day.
