Does anyone know how I can start quilting and learn? My sister in law does it but want to learn because she isn't going to be here forever. I am wondering what I can do to start that won't hurt my wallet. I just found about 50 fabric designs I love and want to order them and start doing sewing quilting.

Old-fashioned quilts are sewn from scraps of used clothing and fabric remnants left over from other sewing projects. Are you wanting to get into the old-fashioned quilting or the "new age" style of machine quilting. It really is inexpensive if you are going the old fashioned route - go to the library and you can find great patterns and instruction books there.

I think Michaels or Joanns gives quilting classes...and you can get little precut squares at Walmart or craft stores to start with...don't order a whole bunch of stuff until you learn first.

You might want to start with a small project like a pillow or a pot holder, made from squares or strips of fabric. The easiest quilt patterns are "9 patch" quilt blocks and "string" quilt blocks such a log cabins.

what you could also do is buy a piece with a picture on it. I have one with lions, zebras, elephants etc in a jungle. I am handsewing around the eyes, ears, and picking out details in the fur. I thought this would be a good start. I already did pillows with dalmations on them so this is a bigger one. I have a friend that does quilts and spends over 100 on all the things to make it but they are big. I don't know if you have a lens mills near by or if they are only here in Kitchener. where I live because its a mennonite area quilting is very big, there are shows every year.
I started a sewing class last year and having been working on a jumper with an underskirt since jan. I find I am so slow I hope eventually I will be faster, I did have to do pleating on the front. some people made a bag to hold their sewing things so they did one quilt square on the bag. I think trying something very tiny may be the best way to start.

I am doing simplicity easy to sew 9402 and its the same red flowered material on the package and lightweight denim.
I have been trying to find the pattern on line, maybe its out of print? I did buy it maybe 8 years ago. I did find a pattern review site
http://sewing.patternreview.com/ perhaps they have reviews on some quilting projects?

My super sweet, eternally patient sister-in-law cut out fabric for 2 quilts. One, she put together and took pictures as she went. The other, she sent in pieces to me along with detailed instructions on how to put them together. (She lives in Missouri, and I live in Oregon.) Following her diagrams and pictures and instructions, I was able to get one quilt top put together.

I need to do the finishing work on it, but wow! Thanks to her, the top looks great.:highfive:

Maybe your sister-in-law could help you out like that?
