Yep, I've read about the antipopes before. A few years ago I read a huge book on the history of Chrsitianity. Of course, most of it focused upon the Catholic Church.

It told of the antipopes, at least one probable female pope and how this lead to those selecting popes from that point on to have each potential candidate sit on a special chair that would allow their private area to be seen from beneath where the selecting Bishops would check to make sure they were male :roll

There were also accounts of popes who did everything for the sake of politics, inlcuding having people murdered and tortured. Accounts of a pope who hated the previous pope so he had his body brought up, put on trial, found guilty and then destroyed and cast into the river.

The history of the Catholic church and the pope wars and such reads more like political intrigue and mafia doings than anything holy or Christian.

Pope's doing political things is just normal. I forget which pope is was and I'm too lazy to look it up, but the entire no-meat fish friday was started because his brother was a fish monger who was going broke, then abracadabera everyone is eating a ton of fish.

Being an x-catholic, the contradictions in the doctrine are so apparent that most catholics are well aware of it. They are taught though:
1) The pope speaks for God, if his views don't agree with past views it just means it's a new rule for a new time
2) Your path to heaven is through the church, and it's the only church, so follow or go to hell
3) Only a priest can understand the bible, you're best off not reading it yourself

Catholics are taught basic biblical truth though, virgin birth, Christ dying for our sins, Genesis story (but now they embrace evolution)

Soul winning a catholic I've found is not so much a one on one show them the bible, at least not in my area. They are trained to listen to a priest, and I've found that pointing at my bible and telling them what it says, they listen. When I open it and try to show them, it's like a cross to a vampire how they react. hsssssssssss

I use the analogy of buying them a house. If I buy them a house, would they need to make payments? Then how come if Jesus payed for our sins, they need to pay for some?
(the catholics teach that Jesus "started" the account, and you must finish it)

Although it's usually not good to attack someone's belief, some times you have to put a doubt in their heart before they will listen. If you must good verses are
James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. (no big sins little sins)
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; (no priest mediator)
1 Timothy 4:3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth (priests can't marry, friday fish fri)
Matthew 23:9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. (I should address the priest HOW!?!)

Of course, many verses go against catholic doctrine, but these hit at the heart

You can also point out that they changed the 10 commandments, #2 is missing, and they split #10 into 2 commandments to cover it up.

I have tons of Catholic books, going back into the 1800s if anyone wants some data
