As a part of the Sunday school program I am wanting to dedicate 1 Sunday a month to specifically focus on missionaries/ missions etc. Does anyone have any ideas as to what to specifically teach them. Last month I did the verse in Matthew on the great commission and we read a story about David livingstone. I want to make it interesting and exciting for them. I want them to have a heart for missions etc. I am intending on contacting our missionaries that our church support and have them write a letter to the kids or something. I just don't know what to ask them to do. Any ideas?????? What's a good song to teach them on missions????? Really any and all ideas would be welcomed.

P.S. I'll be posting this in OBL as well. I'm getting desperate. It's Tuesday tomorrow.

Our class has a missionary that we support with our offerings (most of the year what we collect goes into a fund that helps the missionary with extra things).

We have made Christmas decorations (simple frames, using craft sticks, paint and pictures of the kids - we've even used pasta shapes that we then spray painted gold).

The kids have made cards at different times of the year and sent to the missionary family. We have also sent birthday and Christmas gifts.

Our Sunday morning schedule includes a time when we can teach a practical story - about 8-10 minutes. We have several missionary stories that are 4 or more lessons, so we teach one chapter each week until it's done. Maybe you can incorporate short missionary lessons each week. Teach the Bible story still, but just add some missionary information.

Here's a link with some songs: http://www.biblebc.com/Missions/missionary_songs.htm
Number 11 is kind of weak - unless the kids understand what the light is that they are letting shine, it's just a fun song. Number 5 is a great one to learn for the kids to get the idea that we are to be missionaries anywhere we are. Here's an extra verse for song #5 that I think the kids would find funny and love to sing:
Be a missionary everyday
Learn to eat whatever comes your way
Be it ants down in your corn chips, or roaches in your coke
Don't let it bug you, Just eat it till you choke!
So be a missionary everyday
Learn to eat whatever comes your way
It may be warm and fuzzy and sometimes it still moves
But you don't need a skillet, chew it till you eat it!
Be a missionary today!! Let's eat!

It's a good way to teach them that sometimes a missionary has to eat questionable things...

When missionaries visit your church, see if you can arrange for them to visit your class. Maybe even teach the Bible story. Or show their slides. Kids love to see missionaries.

Ahh, missions. Bring a penny to class, hopefully a "wheat ear" penny (pre 1959). teach the lesson from the inscriptions on the penny.

"One Cent"- A missionary is one "sent" by God. separated unto a special work, etc,
"In God we trust"- Missionaries must trust God for all their needs, etc.
Date- you ought to be able to pinpoint a time that you were saved, etc.

Image of Lincoln- created in the image of God, etc.
People are important to God; souls are important to God, etc.

"Liberty"- we have great liberty in spreading the Gospel;
There is liberty in serving God etc.

"E Pluribus unum"- (many from one) speaks of the unity of believers. We all need each other, no matter of skin, nationality, etc.
Also, one person (missionary) can make a difference for God.
One reaches many.

"The United States of America"- God gave us a good country.
(Mention a few of America's freedoms that other countries don't have)
we need to reach them because God made it possible for the U. S to do so. He wants us to reach others.

The post 1959 have the Lincoln Memorial on the back- key on the word "Memorial", we are a memorial for the Lord etc.
