There have been several post that mentioned bibles having to be smuggled into certain countries or regions. I was just wandering if anyone knew knew of specific places were this is happening today? Such as, are there any countries who legislatively ban bibles or are there specific regions of the earth were the bible is banned for whatever reason? I know this was prominent during the heyday of the communist movement (although all religious literature was banned, not just the christian bible) but I haven't seen any credible evidence of it still going on today. Thanks for the help.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, April 17, 2003 ? A Bible, published by the Bible Society of Malaysia, has been banned by Malaysia's Home Ministry (KDN).

The Iban-language Bible, known as the Bup Kudus, was among 35 books banned by the ministry last week, for being considered "detrimental to the public peace" of the largely Muslim nation.

Tibet they'll kill ya.

Nigeria it's illegal, they lately had someone flood the nation to try and get around the government confiscations.

You can google around for more. It's not like this is something people advertise. You don't find on the Canadian tourist website that they arrested a preacher for quoting Leviticus, and you don't find most countries advertising what books they ban.

I have been to Nigeria and attended a service officated by Anglican Arch Bishop Akinola (known for his condemnation of the Episcopal church's ordination of women and homosexual deacons and priest). I understand that northern Nigeria is predominately arab muslim, but I don't believe they legislatively ban the bible. Certain religious leaders may try to control its distribution, but I don't believe it is banned.

I would like to do some research regarding this, again I would ask if anyone knows of any objective (this means no propoganda) sources that detail the Bible being banned. I have tried some internet research but the majority of sites speaking to the subject are, lets just say, less than credible in most regards.

This may be true. However, legislatively, the only thing regarding christianity that isn't allowed is public worship or display. Christians are not allowed to preach in public or host public gatherings. They are also not allowed to wear crucifix necklaces. However, they are permitted to worship in their homes in any manner they so choose. From my understanding, it is "americanized Christianity," so to speak, that isn't allowed. The ancient church has a strong, yet modest and quiet, presence there and King Abdullah welcomes Christian leaders to state functions all the time.

While the Bible or its publication is not "legislatively" banned in very many countries, it is indeed practically banned in many countries including most Muslim, Hindu, and Bhuddist countries. I have friends who take Bibles into China on a regular basis and on some days in some areas, having a Bible is perfectly fine; however, you may come in the next week and be thrown into prison and have your Bibles destroyed by the same people who let you in the week before.

Some places, having a Bible isn't a problem, but publishing them or importing them is illegal.

All the places I know of where having a Bible isn't welcome, I know of through personal friends who've worked in those places and been persecuted in those places for their faith and for having Bibles. I also cannot give you names and places simply because they prefer to work in anonymity and some countries (especially China) monitor internet forums to get as much information as possible on the people who are "threats" in their view.

I do not know who does it but I believe Bibles are smuggled into China as textbooks but I can't be sure of that info.

From what my research has uncovered so far, China (as a government) allows bibles and christianity. The only time the state gets involved is when a church (of any religion) begins to further, as they consider, anti-government sentiments (which appears to be undefined officially).

Their "allowance" is very token. International pressure is the only reason for any supposed religious liberties in China.

From what I"ve heard from missionaries in the past, Bibles for distribution are not allowed in China unless you sneak them in.

What I'm looking for is officail/legislative disallowance of the Bible in individual possession.

Thanks, but I'm talking about presently. I am aware that the Bible (along with several other religious documents) have a long history of being banned all over the globe. Also, I have found some missionaries whose "persecution stories" were fabricated in order to obtain financial gain via christian's sympathy toward their cause. I'm not saying that the missionaries you know do this, but that it has happened. That's why a lot of these so called "christian missionary" websites are often unreliable or at the least unsubstantiated.

I would venture to say you aren't going to find any reliable information online about countries that truly ban the Bible, because the countries are going to try to look good online.

China is so strict they ban many internet sites from their own people. You think they really truly allow Bibles? I highly doubt it.

Last I heard about china from the china project ministries, is that they now have the bible being taught in most schools. The government is doing this because to understand us, they feel they should understand our beliefs. The china project ministries, is welcomed by the government to open schools because the Chinese made a bad error not too far back and have been caught overwhelmed at it's need to educate it's populous. They pretend they don't know the schools are Christian outlets.. and some of the students get harassed now and then by the officials, but going off the testimoney of people working in china, everyone knows it's a missionary school, but it's a don't ask, don't tell sort of thing.

From what I understand, China allows a predetermined amount of Bibles to be printed every so often. Thus, those that are printed are legal, but it means that many people can never get a hold of one because there is hardly enough printed for every Christian to receive one. That being the case, people smuggle Bibles into the country but can be arrested for doing so.

Thanks for all the info on China, but that's really not what I'm looking for. I am looking for documented accounts of a foreign state officially/legislatively disallowing the possession of the Bible in every circumstance. Any credible info would be appreciated. And again, thanks.
