Question on Types of Music

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am here in this forum to learn more about what Baptists believe because I am interested in serious Christianity. I hope my asking this won't offend anyone as I am not challenging what anyone here believes - I am just trying to understand it to see if I agree with it for myself.

What types of music are accepted and prohibited from a Baptist point of view? Is it just music that has bad language, or is it also non-Christian music that doesn't have bad language and Christian music too? What are the reasons? Thank you.

I looked up online to try and find an answer to my question. I read on this site about gospel music in church.
http://www.allaboutbaptists.com/issues_ ... versy.html

Hopefully it gave me accurate info. It didn't say anything about what types of music were generally regarded as acceptable other than gospel music, so I am guessing that most Baptists don't listen to other types of music (whether Christian or not) in church, or at home. That was mostly what I was curious about as I have Christian CD's at home, and I'd like to know if there's a good reason I shouldn't be listening to them.

If anyone has any input, it's appreciated, but otherwise I understand this is a sensitive topic.

Is the music Christ honoring?

Is the music spiritually (in the Christian sense of the term) edifying?

Does the music appeal to the flesh?

Does the music sound like the worlds music or is there a distinct difference?

These are a few questions to consider when trying to determine if a particular type of music is appropriate or not.

I started a thread quite some time ago here on OB called "Can We Talk About Worms Without Opening the Can?" It is quite lengthy, but you'll get a good idea of what different Baptists believe and where they stand on the music issue and why. There are also several links on it to external information which I think you will find very helpful. Also, there are other threads on the music topic here on OB......just type it in on the search box on top of the page. Most IFB are VERY conservative in what music they listen to....and with good reason. It is hard to put it into a couple of sentences in one or two posts (which is why those threads get really long!!)

John81, thank you for the list of questions to ask myself before listening to music. It helps to think of it in terms of whether the music is edifying and honors Christ - and not just whether it's alright to listen to or not.

HappyChristian, that is great! That makes sense that classical and patriotic music would most likely be okay to listen to. I hadn't thought of those before.

Bzmomo6, I sought out that forum post and found it. Thanks! That helped a lot! I will do searches like that in the future to see if I can find answers to questions that might have already been asked in another post.

For starters, as with other groups there is much variation within Baptists.

I like John's list.

But some go right to the extreme end of a full blown technical explanation of what sort of beat, tempo, emphasis etc.

I am just not smart enough to figure all that out.

As far as a Biblical point of view - I always like the passage wehre Moses and his servant are returning from the mount and the Servant says "Is that the noise of war" and Moses answers "No it is the people partying" - or words to that effect.

So the music they were playing sounded like a war of thier times - clashing and clanging and beating and screaming.

Since it was associated with their wrongful worship, I think we can definitely cross off any music which sounds like that.

Let me think for a moment - umm heavy Rock, heavy Metal, death Metal, acid Rock, black suicide Metal.......

You get the idea. :wink

But I think almost all of us would rule out those genre's without much thought at all. :wink

However many users there are on here, that is many differing views you will get on this subject. Welcome to the world of being a Baptist.

Well for me i listen to mostly Gospel or hymns but i do like other kinds of music too. I like some blue grass, old songs my mom taught me as a child, and patriotic as well as some instrumental. Before i knew the Lord i listened to Oldies music and alot of it. I grew up in the sixties and it was just a part of our culture. I had a hard time breaking away from it and really needed the Lords help. I had other friends who thought there is nothing wrong with it. I think for the most part if its bad to listen to you know it, or the Lord convicts you.

I like all kinds: hymns, rock, country, folk, americana, alt.country, bluegrass, blues, jazz, etc.

The Bible doesn't address specific types of music, but it does give us principles to go by that can be used to judge any kind of music.

For me, personally, if it glorifies sin or encourages me to sin, then I don't listen to it. Otherwise, there's not much I don't listen to.
