That is why you have to be careful and do your research before you buy things. A lot of people will pop a pill from the doctor without considering what it might do to their body and that's not much different than taking an herbal supplement without looking into who made it and what might happen if you take too much of it. You also have to be careful buying fruits and vegetables and seafood because they can contain toxic metals, too. It's life and if it's natural as opposed to a chemical, there are certain precautions you take beforehand but those risks apply to those other things I listed, as well.

There are risks in everything...usually in life, you just exchange one risk for another.

For instance, my son can't have most preservatives, so I get him preservative free lunchmeat, hot dogs, and now recently just found bacon and sausage at Whole Foods (20 minutes away, don't go often). However with those things there is a greater risk for spoilage or contamination, I have to be careful to freeze and to cook well.

My point just being, you can say "I go chemical" or "I go natural" but you technically aren't reducing your overall risk, you are just changing it.

Which is why we all need to do research, like you have for your son! Kudos to you for taking the time to figure things out that will help him. I know it would be inconvenient to travel to Whole Foods more often, but if you had to do that to help him, it would be worth it, eh?

Everything in life has something wrong with it...just ask the experts! And as Americans we are usually too quick to just swallow (sometimes literally! :Green ) what someone says is good for us (or bad for us). We used to be a country of thinkers, but it's getting less and less like that, unfortunately.

The stuff this group examined was bought over the internet. I wouldn't buy any medications, natural or otherwise, over the internet, because you don't really know what you're getting!

And, just to show something...they claim arsenic causes cancer. In high doses, it probably does. In low doses it has been shown to cure cancer. Mercury is deadly to the brain...but vaccinations have contained mercury (don't think they do anymore) for years. It's everywhere...

Thanks for the heads up, Jerry8!

Well, actually, a lot of really good reputable herbal/vitamin companies are available online. Shaklee and Puritan's Pride is a good example. Shaklee, especially, is a very good company that offers their products online.

Personally, I think there's less risk in natural methods because it promotes the overall health of your body rather than attacking a specific thing which could harm other parts of your body. Natural healthcare is a more balanced approach to health, IMO.

Whole Foods is extremely expensive and we can't afford to buy the natural stuff for everyone...we buy him hot dogs, and feed the other kids the cheaper ones and just give Andrew a couple of his own. We can get the hot dogs and lunchmeat locally but will have to travel for extra stuff. Also cereals, he can have not too much more than Cheerios locally.

Anyway the other day at Whole Foods I bought a pack of bacon, a small box of sausage, and a box of Annie's cereal and spent $15!!!!!! Yikes. It would be nice to be rich and be able to feed the entire family like that (now that I'm so aware of how many chemicals we are really eating each day) but there's no way.

BTW the chemicals are not CAUSING his hives, but they do flare them, same with acids like tomatoes, citrus, citric acid, etc. Hopefully IF he grows out of this, he will also outgrow the food sensitivities.

I agree with you, here, Kevin - except that, even though I know they are reputable, I don't buy any supplements I can't touch. Just a personal preference. My personal favorite is Enzymatic Therapy.

Yikes!! I know, eating healthy is so expensive! But bacon is between $4 and $5 a pound, here, and sausage is around $2 if you buy the lesser name brand. Annie's stuff is a couple of bucks, so just buying regular here is almost that much. *sigh* Too bad I can't afford Arugula! :Green :loco

Annie's mac is affordable at Target, but the cereal was five bucks. Yeah the bacon was about average...but the sausage was high. They had pepperoni too, all sorts of cool stuff Andrew could eat...I had to be choosy.

I did find some Oscar Meyer natural hot dogs on sale for 1.99 at the store (didn't know they sold them!) so hopefully he can eat those, they are without nitrates. There seems to be a growing demand for this, which is good for us.

Yeah, nitrates cause all kinds of people problems - some that don't even know it does! Oscar Meyer is on sale at one of the stores here for 2 for $4. The junk dogs are usually $1 to $2, so that's a good buy!!

I've never tried Annie's mac/cheese. How does it rate to Kraft in flavor?

You know what...I was a die-hard Kraft person, refused any other kind (except homemade of course). But Annies tastes better than Kraft I think! I was very surprised. But its good stuff.
