I have Word 2007 and I am wondering how I can change a document from .docx to .doc so that more people can open the files (wedding contracts) via email? Is there a good freeware that does this?

You've got options:

You can "Save as" and choose .doc from the list.

You can also change the settings to automatically save as Word 2003 doc format.

You clients can also download the docx viewer.

You can print to a PDF using any free PDF printer and send them a PDF. For contracts this is the best as they cannot change it on you.

Thanks! You know what, I think I did download a PDF converter awhile back...I forgot about that.

Please do save it in.doc format. I get really annoyed when people (especially clients) sent me documents in some proprietary format. That last one I got was .mdi, and I spent a half an hour looking for software to convert it only to find she'd sent me the wrong information.

I thought I did do "save as" but the only choice was "all files", maybe I did something wrong, I'll go in and try again.

Oh. Come to think of it, duh, the reason I couldn't "save as" is that frankly, I can't find that command on my new Word 2007!!! Guess I better go check the help option...

Ahhhh found it! And found how to change to .doc. I could not for the life of me find "save as" and it was giving me some problems last week. I had to click the colored icon at the top left.

I really do like the new Word 2007 though. Esp now that I know how to "save as", I use that all the time.

.doc is more propreietary than .pdf. PDF is just not meant to be edited. PDF is a somewhat documented format while most (non-MS) programs that display or write .doc are based on the work of reverse engineering.

Doesn't office save in PDF format? I have been using Corel Word Perfect Office 2000 for years and that has the ability to save to PDF, which is what I alway use to email files. I believe that Open Office also can. I knew that MS were not allowed to by Adobe for some reason but I thought that they had sorted it out by Office 2007. I now have that on my new laptop and it is the most annoying programme I have ever had. I can't find anything.

I hate it, a complete waste of eighty quid.

What don't you like? I usually dislike new programs but this one, has like all the things I usually use even easier to access and view. I'm really enjoying it so far.
