The poor still pay income and property tax. The only way they get out of that is if they get money only from the gubmint. Even if people pay rent, they are affected by property tax in their rent payments.

Yes, yard sales are good - but I'm not rich and I've had yard sales!

Look into the idea behind sales tax versus other taxes and you'll see that it is the friendliest tax for the economy.

Ok you almost have me convinced about sales tax. However...it doesn't really matter LOL...its not like its going to happen!

I disagree, most poor do NOT pay income tax. Its taken out of their check but then promptly returned each year. We get very good tax returns each year which means we are not paying much if any taxes (I don't have a problem paying taxes of course, if it means the situation is fair! Anyway with my growing cake business, we WILL be starting to pay taxes, if not this year, but next. And alot. "Small business"....grrr.)

And most poor do not own property so they don't pay property tax either. And honestly rent doesn't count, because their landlord pays the taxes, not them.

With Fannie mae, they do own homes and pay property tax... and some inherit it.

What she meant by rent is that the landowner will jack up the rent cost to pay taxes (and apartments are worth alot of money so I am sure their property tax are pretty high).

I would not consider any homeowner to be "poor", I would consider them middle class or lower middle class.

I mean, we don't even own a home! I don't consider us "poor" though. But we cannot in any way afford a home.

You're right, unfortunately, sales tax won't come about as sole tax. Everyone wants to see a flat tax, or even a head tax (which would be more fair than a flat tax, but it would cut down on large families, for sure!).

If a poor person (and, really, what is the definition?) has a job and money is taken out of their check, they pay income tax. And not all of it is returned. I know that many people get good returns. My sister got back way more than they paid in because of the earned income tax credit a couple of years ago. Guess where that money came from? The people who didn't qualify to get as much back on their taxes...'cause it had to go for the "poor" who get the eic. But not everyone gets money back. We had to pay in this past year...and it hurt us!!!

Re: rent and property tax - When a landlord charges rent, the taxes he pays are included in that rent. When property tax goes up, so does the rent. We rented for 13 years...I know for a fact we were affected by property tax. A landlord has to figure in property and income taxes, and other fees such as insurance, etc., and it comes out in the rent. If it doesn't the landlord will lose money.

I'm just saying though that the landlord pays taxes, not the renter. It is his choice how much profit he makes off the apartments....two landlords could charge two different amounts to their people yet still pay the same taxes. I'm just looking at directly paying taxes here. Even if nobody is renting the apartment, the LL still has to pay taxes on it. Its his responsibility.

I really really hate how Obama keeps hammering on the rich, as if he were not one of them, and as if they were doing something wrong. The rich keep the country running! The rich provide jobs! They provide insurance! The more money they make, the less money we have to pay for things! But Obama says these things because the people getting welfare checks and the people who do not have jobs or insurance are going to believe him, be jealous of the rich, and vote for Obama. Never mind his ethics or morals....they want the rich to have to suffer and pay. Pretty sad reason to vote for a guy. Especially as the result of hating the rich and wanting them to pay will DIRECTLY affect their lives in cost of living and job availability.

people don't realize this, but it is the rich that paid for those hand out welfare. The gov't just tell them to pay taxes or they will go to jail.. but if EVERYONE was poor, there would be no one to pay for welfare. Everyone would be on their own to survive... like Africa or any tribes.

Oh, I agree about the LL being the one who pays the taxes...but renters do feel it in their rent.

People buy into it! ARGH! I am not rich, will never be rich, but I also know most rich work hard and are smart and deserve what they earn...and if they stop earning it, WE will be in trouble. And people are so dumb that when the trouble comes, they will still just blame it on the rich, blame it on Bush, blame it on whoever.

And WHY don't people understand these politicians are RICH! They are talking like they hate the rich, but that is impossible or they would hate themselves. All of this is said ONLY to get votes.

Man McCain better start talking or we are in big trouble. Even Rush Limbaugh says he has no clue what McCain is doing, because he's doing absolutely nothing to take votes from Obama.

I'd be very hesitant to vote for someone who is not smart enough to be successful enough to earn a decent standard of living!

I don't have a problem with their standard of living...I have a problem with them having a problem with other people's standards of living. :Green
