It's also hard to get people to volunteer to help. We have a great church, but I notice oftentimes, especially when it comes to kids programs, nobody volunteers until the last minute when they realize no one else is going to.

We always manage thought, but it's a shame some of these younger people don't get more involved...meaning younger moms and dads.

Both of my pastors have basically called it laziness. They really don't understand this generation of people that can't seem to contribute "time" to anything for these children. Yes...it seems that it is the older and middle age folks that really help out. We have a church policy that parents (church members) need to help where these kids are concerned. At least...in some area. Whether it is VBS, Sunday School, kid's programs, the nursery, bus ministry, etc.

After the "new members" class...a believer has an interview. The pastor and deacon ask where your interests are. At that time...you are encouraged to get involved. :thumb It is boring to just warm a pew. IMO.

I understand you are referring to younger folk, so this is for me personally. After having raised my children through all the stages of life and being there in all their ministries and ball leagues and such, I don't want to volunteer with children any longer. I have a bevy of my own grandchildren, nieces and nephews to spend time and love on. Also, many people have a harder time with the chaos that children bring into a room as they get older, I am one of them.

Now you young bucks and does, get going..........................

I just became a member of our church last year and our church has a decorating night for the Christmas season. Pastor asked for volunteers to show up on that night to help with the decorating. We expected there to be several people there but we decided to volunteer anyway. When we arrived there were several cars in the parking lot so we figured with so many people there this won't take long. However, most all of the cars belonged to those who were finishing up practice for the Christmas program and they all left. There was only a handful of us for the church decorating, but it was fun and a good time to get to know the few who were there better.

This is going to draw flack, it's not done in a mean spirit, though I admit that it is a strong response--BUT:

While I can't speak from experience to those well advanced in age, I receive some "senior" discounts but can't collect Social Sec yet, to those my age -- quit whining and excusing, find a young person (or 2 or 3)(especially a teenager) to take under your wing, quit contributing to the fallacy of a "generation gap", say no to your flesh (we still get out of bed when tired to feed livestock or whatever), be an example, fullfill the Biblical command to teach the younger, encouage the pastor by getting in over your head in a job your flesh is rebelling against (your wife doesn't enjoy changing grandbabies dirty diapers, but she does it), embarrase older folks by removing their excuses, make a diffence in some young lives for the glory of God!!

trc123 - please understand that this is not a direct assault upon you, I know neither your age, health, or level of involvement in your church. I am addressing an attitude I see frequently. If this fit, please get right. If it does not fit, please don't take offense.

I didn't take offense and haven't got a clue why I would. I know who I am and what God wants from me so I couldn't even begin to take your post as a direct assault. If God is speaking to you about this then get going on it; he's not speaking to me about any deficiency on my part in that area of serving Him.
